"...and unto you I bless you..." is the debut work from composer Christopher Ittoku, first published in 2014, and is a conceptual album contemplating loss, death, religion and the meaning of living. Written as a musical sonate, this works draws from modern contemporary classical, neo-classical and new-age composers such as Max Richter, while also displaying influences from modern electronic influences.

Robert Jackson composed the enduring hymn tune “Trentham†in 1894 as a setting of Edwin Hatch’s “Breathe On Me, Breath of God†which was written in 1886. Steve Ash brings a modern harmonic approach to this classic melody with a sensitive treatment in this arrangement for 7-part brass ensemble. Though the melody is primarily passed between the lead Flugel and Trombone parts, other accompanying moving lines around the entire ensemble will keep things interesting for everybody, making for a good exercise in ensemble balance and blend. This arrangement doesn’t contain any significant range or other technical challenges making for an accessible chart for a broad range of skill levels. This tender arrangement would fit well when needing a reflective piece on a program for concert or worship.

Tommy Dorsey released a hit recording of it the same year, but it was in the postwar years that the song gained its greatest success. The best-known version was recorded by the Andrews Sisters and Gordon Jenkins Chorus and Orchestra on July 15, 1949. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements and was developed from the original 1937 sheet music. I wrote this for a composition assignment at school one time and it started out with the moving bassline that is present for nearly the entire piece. The title itself describes the piece - “moving basslineâ€. After coming up with the moving bassline, I wrote the melody on top which is used throughout the piece and built upon. This piece uses a ternary form which is one of my favourite forms to write in. I especially like going in a slightly different direction the second and final time the A section comes around. So in the first A section, the bassline is introduced and the melody comes soon after. The bassline then transitions into the B section which features a mobile melody on top of the bassline. This was a lot of fun to write as I came up with 8 bars first and then repeated that theme two more times but with a more intense variation each time. Then in the final section of the piece, the original motif returns with some variations to keep it interesting and fresh.

The yetzer hara is controlled and restrained by the “yetzer hatov,” or the inclination to do good things and commit acts of kindness. Rabbinic teachings emphasize the importance of both inclinations – without the yetzer hara, people would have no sense of motivation or purpose to their actions, but the yetzer hatov is necessary to ensure that those actions do not harm others. Thus, the two inclinations depend on each other for balance.This teaching resonates with me very personally, as someone who was prone to fits of anger while I was growing up. My adolescent years tested me as I struggled to keep my yetzer hara in check.
