My specific task from the Hudson Commission was to concentrate music based on the natural habitat and beauty of the Hudson as well as on the time of the first European settlers. It was natural for me to think about old-time fiddling in this light. In 1909 Washington Irving described the Catskill Mountains as a dismembered branch of the Appalachian Mountains. My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600â€™s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800â€™s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet.For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward. With classic ragtime syncopation in the primo part against a 'stride' style in the secondo, this duet is sure to be a popular addition to any recital programme.For the introduction, the primo (perhaps the mouse?) starts things off with a bright opening statement that is answered by the secondo player (the cat?), and then the chase begins!During the opening theme, the primo has an opportunity to tease the cat with a cheeky staccato 'interjection'. Just before this high note is an acciaccatura grace note, which should be played as quickly as possible beforehand.The middle section then modulates to G minor for a variation on the theme, after which a rallentando culminates to a brief pause in the game. There is a break (a caesura) after the pause, so try to leave a good couple of seconds of suspense before launching back into the original theme a tempo.Keep and eye out for staccato and tenuto notes, which will help to communicate the playful feel of the piece.The duet ends with a call-and-response between the primo and secondo, then a crescendo to the ending hits - with a cheeky acciaccatura grace note from the mouse, of course :).

This is not your typical nocturne. This is night as it really is for many people: a time of restlessness, of anxiety, in which you lie awake or even feel the need to get out of the house for a while. This music is for all of those nights when you wonder what on earth is happening to the world around you, when you feel troubled by the contradictions between you and the world, when you dread the morning news of the results of an election or referendum; when you just want to shout at the world, I'm out of here ... imagine a night in which you need to step outside to gather your thoughts. You feel the chill of the night air as you stand gazing up at the sky. As clouds move above, you turn over in your mind the things that are troubling you. Gradually you begin to see more clearly the difference between the things you cannot change and those that you can; and with that realisation comes serenity and finally you are able to sleep.The composer, who is a passionate believer in unity rather than division, wrote this music three days after Britain's 2016 referendum on its continued membership of the European Union, reflecting his feelings about the outcome. This is, therefore, as deeply personal a piece of music as you'll get. Include it in a program and it will help to put the rest of the program into perspective.The music itself demonstrates that nonatonic and octatonic modes of limited transposition can be used to create melodies and harmonic progressions that combine tension with great beauty. At notated tempi the work lasts just under ten minutes. It is of advanced intermediate difficulty, the main challenges for the player being the complex modality and the shifting rhythms. The sound file provided here is the composer's own live performance, recorded on Saturday, September 10th, 2016. Ragtime was originally and primarily piano music.Â The Library of Congress traces the origin and wellspring of ragtime to St. Louis, Missouri. Â The Britannica website explains, â€œRagtime evolved in the playing of honky-tonk pianists along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers in the last decades of the 19th century. It was influenced by minstrel-show songs, African American banjo styles, and syncopated (off-beat) dance rhythms of the cakewalk, and also elements of European music.â€Â Â Â Â But it wasnâ€™t until the mid-1890s, when music publishers started printing ragtime scores, making the music available to the public at large, that ragtimeâ€™s popularity began to soar. Â By 1900 ragtime was the popular music. Â It stayed that way until about 1917 when the rise of jazz began to overtake it. Â By 1920, ragtime was nearly forgotten.Â Â Â Â Thirty years later, a ragtime revival began. Â And one Patricia Lamb-Conn found out that her father, Joseph F. Lamb, was a well-known composer of ragtime. Â In fact, the â€œBig Threeâ€ composers of classical ragtime are considered to be Scott Joplin, James Scott and the only non-African American, Joseph Lamb.Â Â Â Â Lamb was born in 1887 in New Jersey, taught himself to play piano and was very much influenced by Joplinâ€™s early ragtime publications. Â From there, Lamb went on to develop into a master of classic ragtime.Â Â Â Â One of Lambâ€™s most popular works was a 1916 composition he titled â€œPatricia Rag.â€ (The title apparently had nothing to do with his daughter, who was born in 1924.) Â It consists of four themes in five sections, with the first theme repeated after sections 1 and 2. Â Lamb pitched the opening in E-flat Major, changing to A-flat Major at the Trio. Â Â Â Â Â This brass quintet arrangement, completed in 2024, consists of 150 measures, approximately five minutes, ten seconds in length. Â It retains the basic structure of the original piano score but modifies the pitches to B-flat Major and E-flat Major, respectively, to accommodate the normal playing range of the brass instruments. Â Possible exceptions for some players include: Â (1) Trumpet 1 plays its A-above-the-staff a number of times and its B above-the-staff once; (2) Trombone plays several E above-the-staff notes; (3) Tuba plays several way-below-the-staff F notes and one high G note. Throughout the arrangement, the original melody is maintained and featured, but in some sections the background and harmony are altered to feature one or more of the five instruments. Â In the Trio, the sections designated by rehearsal marks F and G are slowed and treated as a serenade; the original tempo is restored at H. Â In performing this arrangement, players should pay particular attention to dynamics. I am incredibly excited to offer this selection to you in a effort to diversify concert band music repertoire for younger player that avoids using typical key signatures, but does not veer too far away from standard practices. It is suggested that players practice playing the first few notes of the concert Bâ™ scale (Bâ™, C, D, Eâ™), then swapping out concert Bâ™ for concert A.
