Gustav Holst - Folksongs of Hampshire England . In the early 1900's there was great interest in collecting and preserving the folk songs of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Equipped with their newly invented recording devices, people such as Cecil Sharp, Charles Stanford, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gustav Holst would travel into the country-side to record, or notate songs being sung. They would frequently use these songs in their own compositions. Holst's music in particular is filled with those songs and his two suites for band are especially valued by wind bands around the world. This group of four songs was arranged for voice and piano by Holst and set for flute quartet by John Gibson. The songs are 1. Young Edwin in the Lowlands Low 2. Bedlam City 3. The Irish Girl 4. Young Reilly. The instrumentation is: Flute 1 - 3, and alto with an alternate 4th flute for the alto.

This is the most famous Windwood Soundtrack and brings always much fun to the players and the audience.
The arrangement for 3 Bb Clarinets and 1 Bb Bass Clarinet starts with a impressive tutti and goes on with a funny Bass Clarinet Walking.
It´s an easy arrangement for intermediate skilled players, but even the most advanced players will enjoy it while they can show their skills in the solo part. This theme lives from precise ensemble phrazing. You will enjoy the jazzy voicings.

Cheerful music by the British composer, Gustav Holst. It was written for a string orchestra, but works well for woodwinds. Holst liked to throw the melody around to all the parts, so everyone gets to shine. The music is not difficult, however I would suggest advanced intermediate due to some challenging key changes. There are 3 movements (Prelude, Air, and Dance) and the sound sample has a short section of each. The entire piece runs about 7 minutes.

From the 2004 Studio Ghibli Film 'Howl's Moving Castle', the ever popular main theme of Merry-go-round of Life is arranged as a fun piece for Brass quartet, with an interesting segment in counterpoint to highlight the colour and wonders this film brings about.
