The piece is a Charlie Parker-Style blues with a modal bridge. After the theme, a short tutti leads to a series of solos with backgrounds for various saxes and brass, finishing with a full ensemble chorus out. The chart can be opened up for additional solos if desired. GateWay Editions Jazz Ensemble Series titles feature SampleSolos for most improvisational sections, so your band can learn to play the section material AND blow on changes at the same time. Each soloist's part is included without the sample as well, for the experienced player. All charts are straight through, with no D.S.'s back to the top or awkward pageturns. A rhythm section Uni-Part comes with each chart, which the optional guitar, bass, piano and even drums can play from! Drumset parts are fully notated versions of the MIDI audio clips. Piano voicings AND chord symbols are provided. Running time without additional soloists is approx. 5 mins 30 secs. Brass ranges are conservative at both the high and low ends. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862528). The IImin7-V7-IMaj7 chord progression is the first and most basic set of chords in tonal jazz. So, let's see how far they can be layered, stretched, and interwoven to create some nicely contrasting harmonic and melodic colors. OK, it Might take a BIT more work that the title suggests. Irony is IN right now... The saxes state the theme in octave unison, while the brass comment and accompany. Then the saxes take over for a full chorus of soli. None of the phrases is more than three measures in length, so the players can blow through without blowing themselves out. The soloists are the trumpet, accompanied by a trombone background, and the piano, with saxophones behind it. SampleSolos are provided. The trumpet shows how Woody Shaw might have played this piece with pentatonic scales, a bit of a contrast to the tonal nature of the changes. The piano has a rapid, multi-noted solo with lots of chromatics, with fingerings, to show what the Tatum-style of pianistic technique is all about. Running time is just over 4 mins at suggested tempo. The rhythm section Uni-Part is included with every GateWay Edition Jazz Ensemble Series chart. Drum part is notated as heard on the audio clip. Here is a tune in that genre, with the fluegelhorn as the main voice for both the melody and the solo. The alto saxophone has a short solo, and the saxophone section has a segment of the melody as a soli. Fm6 and Gm6 in the A section alternate with E Maj7, D Maj7, and C Maj7 at the bridge to create some nicely contrasting colors and feelings. As always with GateWay Editions Jazz Ensemble music, SampleSolos are provided for each soloist. Chord symbols AND written-out voicings are provided for ALL the piano parts in the GEJES book.The rhythm section Uni-Part can be played by an optional guitar, piano, bass, and even the drums! Each of the scales required for the improvisers is a melodic minor-derived scale, giving the whole piece an air of both openness, with the wide melodic intervals, and also a darker color, with those chords and scales in play. There are SampleSolos for the piano and 4th trumpet. Changes are included for an additional trombone solo, if desired, no sample provided. The main statement segues directly into a mixed soli that alternates tutti and mixed soli sections. Then, it's on to the blowing choruses, each with the background. No soloists will be required to play in the background, so everyone stays fresh. The melody returns, in a layered and stretto sort of way, with the final theme's second half returning to the altered voicings that are so characteristic the piece. Approx running time is one minute per chorus. Audio clip is just the piano solo, with backgrounds, so as to be able to hear those backgrounds clearly. Ranges are conservative, high and low. Rhythm section Uni-Part for bass, optional guitar, and even piano and drums if you wish, for simplicity's sake. All parts are two pages, rhythm section are three. MBB.
