Robert Johnson (c. 1583 1633) was the last of the great English lutenists; he served Prince Henry and was later a prominent figure in the court of Charles I. He wrote music for many plays and masques of the time, including several by Shakespeare. Decades after Johnsons death, in a Dialogue between the Author and His Lute within Musicks Monument and the persona of the Lute, writer and lutenist Thomas Mace described John Dowland and Robert Johnson as Two famous men; Great Masters in My Art. Despite such high praise and the fact that much of Johnsons music is well-suited to the guitar, few guitarists play it. This is a very effective and playable piece - the flute and classical guitar make a fantastic pairing, with the guitar providing the rhythm and the flute weaving the melody above and providing a lovely sustain over the rippling accompaniment.


The flute part is a little easier than the guitar part, but the guitar part only has one barré chord and the remainder of the chords will be familiar to a player with modest experience.

Ennio Morricone and his son Andrea rightly received a BAFTA award for the gorgeous soundtrack music.

My arrangement captures the four ?verses? that feature in this piece - each verse maintains the same thematic material but the accompaniment becomes more involved and with a thicker texture, before the piece fades away again. The guitar accompaniment is styled on the piano solo score, but tailored here and there to fit the guitar like a glove.

The key here isn?t the same as the original, but it fits right into the ?sweet spot? of the flute?s pitch range and allows for a guitar accompaniment that can use open strings to improve the sustain. Unlike other arrangements, this has plenty of space and few finger gymnastics, so the gentle movement of the original is easy to reproduce.

I also have an arrangement for two guitars which moves the melody between the guitars as the piece progresses.
