ViolinVagabond Music #6017039. Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.845981). This is a loop station composition for electric violin that I composed for my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2014. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boomerang III loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 3 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although some phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: a Haiku is characterized by a pattern of 5-7-5 syllables, and in this piece that refers to the meters used in each of the overarching sections. The ambient intro in 5/8 involves a quartal ostinato with long sweeping volume swells, which then develops into a pizzicato groove in 7/8. This groove forms the basis for the majority of the tune, as melodies & improvised solos drift in and out over an A and B section loop. On the final B section, the loop drops out and the violinist builds up into a more distorted strum bowing groove (which accompanies a drum solo on the original recording). As the intensity builds, the 7/8 groove is shortened back into 5/8, thus completing the Haiku. The piece ends with a restatement of the original ostinato as it fades into silence using an automated volume fade on the looper pedal.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. If you have a looper capable of syncing to a click track, you could also try adding bass or guitar/keyboards (players can read the chord symbols on the chart as a lead-sheet). The first is a latin groove with a a highly syncopated chopping groove and a simple, soaring melodic head. This section can be opened up for a variety of solo ideas from jazz to Latin to funk, before it transitions using a common tone into the bridge, which is more of an epilogue. This section has much more of a heavy rock bent, with a thick stack of string overdubs that mimic an orchestra sitting over an overdriven rhythm groove, and a breakdown where aggressive drum fills are accompanied by rhythmic chugging in the violin. Finally, all of these ideas culminate as the A section melody is re-introduced over the rock groove, building to an ultimate climax.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. I usually add additional percussive loops when I perform this solo.I have also included three auxiliary string parts, which can be used to perform this piece with a string section or an orchestra. The parts line up with the second section of the tune and replace some of the loops with live parts. This eight minute work is a great addition to the repertoire of a professional who is well equipped to perform with electronics, or has an aspiration to perform with electronics. The score comes with a diagram and instructions on how to operate a loopstation or loop pedal, making it ideal for that first experience performing with a looper.And Then I Found Myself will allow anyone to perform a compelling melody, with a slight feel of improvisation, all while accompanying oneself with an in-the-moment creation of a recording. Unlike some of my other works for clarinet + electronics where the media is fixed, the electronics in And Then I Found Myself are created right there during the performance - which offers the audience a unique perspective as the performer builds the piece right in front of them.

Published by ViolinVagabond Music (A0.845984). This is an original Celtic fiddle tune that I wrote & performed with my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2015. It was originally conceived as a loop station composition for 7-string electric violin, but can also be performed as a fiddle solo with any form of standard accompaniment. The looper arrangement was recorded on 7-string violin with a Boomerang III loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 tempo-synced tracks with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, BOSS RC-30, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you use an octave pedal to record the low bass lines. By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a lead sheet for a jazz combo or ensemble, a good basis for a variety of arrangements, improvisations, or contrafacts. The audio sample is my melody from Finale PrintMusic, combined with an iReal Pro swing accompaniment. I’ve designated the melody for solo violin, an instrument that I would like to see and hear more often in jazz ensembles. You will hear a violin carry the melody in the audio sample. Playing the solo on violin solves a possible difficulty in performance. Problem: This piece may be too challenging for many wind instrument players (brass, woodwind). Solution: This piece is well suited to a non-wind instrument player! Violin springs to mind. Violin is especially appropriate here: This tune has lots of notes; similar to a solo violin partita prelude or up-tempo dance movement by J. S. Bach. A wind instrument player told me that finding spots for taking a breath was a challenge. This is not to discourage wind players from experimenting with the piece, adjusting it in places if necessary. A wind player may include more breathing spots for relief in his or her improvisation! Note for composers: I adapted this piece from the 5th (swing) movement of my Partita II, for solo violin, also for sale on this site.

These songs I chose because I like them, some I learnt from my first real guitar teacher, Dylan Todd, at the Guitar Centre in Palma de Mallorca in the late sixties when my family lived there; some from my father who was my other first guitar teacher; some down the years from other musicians. I have kept the accompaniments as simple as possible to go with my book The Art Of Accompaniment On The Guitar, most guitarists could handle them. I have also annotated everything, knowing the history of a song is important and as we increasingly lose the oral tradition I was brought up with the reason I chose certain verses and not others becomes relevant to that understanding. This is a simpler publication than the printed one available from Amazon. All of these songs are out of copyright, those that are in copyright that I would include and have arranged can be found individually through Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct.
