This choral work for SATB, harp (or piano) and drum sings of five different winter holidays: the Winter Solstice, Hannukah, Christmas, Isra and Mi'raj, (a Muslim holiday that is held according to the Islamic calendar and therefore falls in the winter only on some years) and Kwansaa. I'm sure there are many more holidays and verses could be added for them. It is meant to celebrate both our common ground and our diversity. The recording is generated by computer and the voices are choral oohs, without words. Reflective and subdued, the interplay between Stevens’ piano and Iimori’s oboe is effortless and flowing. Autumn Wind picks up the pace a bit, but continues the easy flow, bringing images of leaves swirling. Signs of Winter is a bit darker and more mysterious. Iimori is a big fan of Paul McCandless, and that musician’s influence is very strongly heard in these first three pieces - a very good thing! In Clouds, Iimori switches from oboe to English horn. This duet with the piano is a dramatic musical depiction of the gathering clouds and anticipation of a coming thunder storm. I really like it a lot! Snow is tranquility set to music. Sparrow’s Song brings us to the beginnings of spring - the freshness in the air, and the joyful songs of birds in the yard. July reflects the laziness of a hot summer day. Season’s Reprise brings together the themes from the various seasons, creating a lovely closing to the Suite.

Inspired by the idea of representation in music to express my feeling, I started to compose this song cycle from the beginning of May to the beginning of June. In this song cycle, I aimed to spread an ironic message to reflect the loss of humanity of human using the poems about winter by Mr. William Shakespeare for text painting.The key of the featured song Blow, Blow Thou Winter wind is B minor. It portrays a cold and miserable feeling. The first phrase Blow, blow, thou winter wind shows a blowing effect especially in the work blow in the voice part. This makes the phrase more flowing. The second verse heigh-ho! Sing, heigh-ho! Unto the green holly describes a resonant sounding effect. The second phrase Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly criticizes the dark side of friendship and love, so the key changes back to minor, which serves as a contrast to the previous phrase. The main idea of this verse: this life is most jolly ends with a major to emphasize the description of numerous negative feeling with hope and joy.

In writing this piece, I envisioned landscapes covered in snow and ice – a meadow, a dark forest, a frozen lake, and a majestic mountain range. I sought to capture other elements of sound and imagery as well, such as whistling and whirling of frosty wind, glittering sunlight reflected off of shards of ice, snow falling, and joyous sounds of people ice skating. I was largely inspired by an experience I had of standing outside one wintery evening in Colorado – one of my favorite places to be in Winter – captivated by the beauty of all I saw, heard, and felt around me. Since then, I have always experienced a thrill of wonder, beauty, and mystery about the outdoors in Winter.

This clarinet quartet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's own counter-melodies and intricate wind writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with clarinet 1 playing the melodic line. In verse 2, clarinet 3 presents the tune in a lower register while the bass (or 4th) clarinet plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The first and second clarinets weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.

The winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight of the year. After the solstice, days gradually get more and more time of light. Post Winter Solstice draws an emotional equivalent to this natural process. It features two themes: one is a long, winding, gloomy melody; and the second is an ascending passage of 9 notes that repeats, but each time it is one note shorter, until it consists of merely two notes. The two themes alternate throughout the piece, each time played by a different instrument and in a different key. While most of the piece is dark and melancholic, it ends on a slightly brighter tone, thus reflecting the notion of “post winter solstice.â€.
