Published by Paul Addison (A0.1126233). Seeds Along the Way is a musical about the life of the biblical King David, written by Paul Addison. David gets to see the major events of his life with the help of his guardian angel, Gabrielle. This manner of storytelling combines elements of It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, and the old TV show This Is Your Life. Each event in David’s life is told through a song. It was originally written as a VBS (Vacation Bible School) musical. Although everyone in Israel is singing his praises, David questions the purpose of his life. Gabrielle shows him that everyone’s life is important, and that the good things that we do are like seeds planted along the way, which may not sprout and grow until much later. After reviewing his past, David is given a glimpse of the future, and realizes that he is one of many who are preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ. The musical is based on the stories from the Bible, mainly from 1 and 2 Samuel, but also including a Psalm and a geneaology listing from Matthew. David throws in a couple of bad puns as he tries to understand what Gabrielle is trying to tell him. The accompaniment is written for piano, but is appropriate for a praise team or a small dance band. The styles are quite varied, including cha-cha, pop, bossa nova, ballad, dirge, blues, jazz, and waltz. The piano accompaniment could be supplemented by percussion instruments (tambourine, maracas, woodblock, cowbell, etc.), as well as guitar, saxophone, and drums. The songs are at an Easy Intermediate level. The only stage requirements are a small balcony or elevated level with a railing or fence, and a floor area for the chorus. The musical consists of 10 scenes, but the two narrator characters remain on the balcony, and the floor area only needs to be changed in case the chorus members use different costumes and/or props for the different scenes. This arrangement was written for a chorus of young women, and as such the ranges are relatively narrow.
Vocal ranges are:
Tenor: F#4 - F#5 (F# above middle C to F# above high C)
Lead: A#3 - D#5 (A# below middle C to D# above high C)
Baritone: A#3 - B4 (A# below middle C to B above middle C)
Bass: F#3 - D#4 (F# below middle C to D# above middle C)

ATON is a stage play written by Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler which represents Egypt in the time of the Pharoahs but seen through the eyes of modern theatre directors and actors. The modern scenes are spoken but the Egyptian scenes require music, so Manfred and Otmar asked me to write the music for these. The music is composed for various forces as the play progresses, from the full orchestra (woodwind, strings, harp, piano, timpani) and choir down to more intimate moments with single voice or duets, flute and classical guitar or with single voice and bassoon. For each section the pdf file contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview. As I write 16 sections have been composed, but more are to come - please just search for Aton in due course for the full picture. The first performance is planned to take place in the Landestheater in Innsbruck during 2015 ================= ATON ist ein Bühnenstück von Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler geschrieben, das Ägypten von der Pharaonenzeit vorstellt aber auch duch die Augen moderner Direktoren und Schauspieler sieht. Die modernen Szenen sind gesprochen aber die ägyptischen Szenen brauchen Musik, deshalb haben mich Manfred und Otmar gebeten die Musik dafür zu schreiben. Die Musik ist für verschiedene Kräfte während des Stückes komponiert: vom vollen Orchester (Holzbläser, Streicher, Harfe, Klavier, Timpani) und Chor bis zu intimeren Augenblicken mit Solostimme (oder Duetten) mit Flöte und klassicher Gitarre oder Solostimme mit Fagott. Im Augenblick gibt es 16 Kompositionen, aber es wird noch mehr geben - bitte suche später nach Aton für das vollständige Bild. Für jede Komposition enhält die pdf-Datei Partitur und Stimmen und die mp3-Datei ist eine elektronische Vorschau. Es wird geplant, die erste Aufführung im Landestheater Innsbruck im Jahre 2015 stattzuhalten.

One year later, the poem was discovered and set to music by the English organist Henry Gauntlett. This 2-hands piano version is fairly difficult and requires large stretches at times, but for those who like a challenge it is well worth it. However, we decided it would be good to provide 4-hands versions as well, which are easier to perform and also available on this site. The original stories behind the movements are: 1. Marie for shame - based on a setting of the poem Marie, vous estes paresseuse - Marie for shame you keep a-bed too long, you must get up and enjoy life. 2. Nocturne is basically a segue to the first movement, in which Marie yawns and goes back to sleep! The harmonies are rich and yet somnolent. 3. Camp David is a sprightly number based on the Yiddish folksong Ikh bin a meidel in de joren - I am a maiden come of age and I am looking for a husband. 4. Blue Boar Blue is based on a poem by a friend stuck studying in his college room (Blue Boar Quad at Christ Church Oxford) but dreaming of sunny outings to the river and punting. The sound samples are electronic previews. In the case of the 4-hands versions, the pdf files include the score and also separate piano parts. The original string quintets are also available on this site.
