This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Brass Octet consisting of 3 Trumpets, 2 French Horns, 2 Trombones and 1 Tuba. One Trumpet, 1 French Horn and 1 Trombone play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, but another version is also available in the key of D Major if you would prefer. Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. Also, just to let you know, the Octets written in the key of Bb Major have full-length recordings while the Octets in D Major and all Quintets have only the first 25 measures, or so, available to hear. Please feel free to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar which are also available. There are quite a few other arrangements in a variety of styles and I'm certain you will find something else which might interest you as well. Please keep checking because I plan to continue to add new arrangements as often as I can. I'm certain that this exciting arrangement of Pachelbel's Canon will be a challenge to some performers but will continue to entertain both performers and audiences alike for years to come.

Other versions of Pachelbel's Canon in D have also been arranged by Regis Bookshar and are available for a wide variety of instrumental Quintets and Octets, in both the keys of D Major and Bb Major. I think that String players would probably prefer to play the versions in the key of D Major while the Brass and Woodwind musicians might prefer to play the Bb Major versions. I hope you take the time to compare the different versions to find the right version for you. To help you decide which version, or versions, you may want to choose, I have included several musical samples for you to listen to and to hear what these arrangements may sound like and so that you may compare the various arrangements. This selection, Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon In D, is perhaps the most famous canon ever written and has been one of my favorite compositions to arrange. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon In D, was originally written in the key of D Major and was scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo which repeats the same harmonic progression throughout the entire piece. The common musical term for this is ostinato or ground bass. Regis Bookshar has now arranged this music for a Brass Octet consisting of 3 Trumpets, 2 French Horns, 2 Trombones and 1 Tuba. Three Trumpets play the melody in canon while the ostinato accompaniment is played by the other five instruments. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but could also be performed by professional performers. It is perfect for concerts and church services, especially for Weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (36 pages). This version is written in the key of D Major, as is the original version, but, if you prefer, another version, written in the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, is also available. Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917404). Three Pieces for Tuba Ensemble is a collection of three pieces that were composed at different times for different occasions. This set makes up a good suite for concert performance. Although listed as a tuba ensemble compositions, euphoniums usually play the higher two parts. All three are written in five parts. Optional substitute parts for French Horn and Flüglehorn are also included in this set, as well as euphonium parts in treble clef.Salutation Fanfarewas composed in 1985 for performance at the New York Brass Conference at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. That year, famous tubist Harvey Phillips was being honored at a special concert. This piece started the concert with the composer conducting an ensemble of about twenty euphonium and tuba players made up of Indiana University alumni, free-lance musicians and other friends of Mr. Phillips. The piece is based on the phrase Harvey Phillips Mr. Tuba. Simple Giftsis a traditional American folksong that has been arranged by many composers over the years. This arrangement was done in 1990 for performance at the International Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association Conference held in Sapporo, Japan. It was premiered by the Colonial Tuba Quartet that year. It has been arranged in four parts as well as this arrangement in five parts.Octubafest Polkawas composed in 1976 at the request of Harvey Phillips for performance at the Octubafest activities at Indiana University. It was premiered by the Indiana University Tuba Ensemble that year, conducted by Harvey Phillips. Mr. Phillips was the first to use the word Octubafest, probably in 1974 or 1975. Octubafest celebrations have taken place at many schools and universities ever since, usually in the month of October. He said that having an Octubafest celebration early in the school year provided an opportunity for new students entering college to get to know each other. At Indiana University during Harvey Phillips’ tenure (1973 – 1996) the Octubafest concerts were always followed by a party at Harvey’s house, making for a good time for all. Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over ninety compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally, including First Prize in the 1991 TUBA International Etude Composition Competition, for his Twenty Characteristic Etudes for Tubaan important part of the tuba pedagogy repertoire. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe and have been performed extensively throughout the world. He has been a frequent traveler to Spain since 1993 and has promoted compositions by Spanish composers around the world. He is the only composer who has been commissioned six times by Spanish bands for Certamen competitions, with each band winning first prize. He has thirty-three compositions commercially recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Records and others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University. He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida.

Atypical to those classic publications, there are some lively 16th note runs featured in the tuba part during the opening strain (you may want your tuba player to set the tempo for this one). Across the rest of the ensemble, everybody gets a chance to take on the melody along with a number of other active lines and transitions to keep things interesting for players and listeners alike.This composition fits right in with the style of the other traditional Hungry Five pieces. There are no extreme range requirements (other than some lovely chalumeau register clarinet lines and a trombone part that briefly reaches its way up to 3rd ledger line G) and the technical challenges shouldn’t be out of reach for intermediate players so even fairly young ensembles could include this on a German band performance. Ready to go for adding a fine waltz to your Oktoberfest gig!

Edward Taylor Paull (1858-1924) was an American composer of marches and rags who was successful in producing a large number of circus marches in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s.. The Ben Hur Chariot Race March was the first publication he released in 1894. He also arranged Harry J. Lincoln's hit, Midnight Fire Alarm.These arrangements have been prepared for the instrumentation of Alford’s Hungry Five polka band books and serve as a fine addendum to those familiar pieces. While the clarinet parts tend to be the most active, they often feature diatonic scalar patterns that remain accessible to most intermediate-level players. The trombone part here is more active than many other arrangements for this kind of ensemble and could also be handled by Euphonium if desired. Again, it’s mostly short diatonic 16th note bursts. At the risk of sounding sloppy, it may be better to take the tempo a little lesser than a circus march tempo to accommodate.
