However, parts are doubled at the octave where necessary for players with more beginning/limited ranges. Gordon Cherry #4821599. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792418). Mr. Andrew Converse has written a great arrangement for Trombone Quartet of Sousa's first big hit as a march. The Gladiator is an early work by John Philip Sousa, written in 1886 while he was leader of the US Marine Band. The Gladiator was written as a tribute to Charles B. Towle, a journalist at the Boston Traveler. The journalist introduced him to the Knights Templar. There is speculation about the origins of the march's name. Sousa had not written many marches before that, and none of them received great popularity. The Gladiator, however, sold over a million copies - a record for the time and it was soon performed frequently. It follows the traditional march style of the period. Although marches such as Semper Fidelis, The Washington Post, Stars and Stripes Forever and Hands Across the Sea have achieved greater popularity, the Gladiator is still regarded as John Philip Sousa's first success.

This march would be rated a three plus or a or four in difficulty level. It is full of fun musical experiences. On the last time through the trio, really echo the 5-1 melodic interval when stated in the melody. The percussion is played on the recording, but not heard very well. The score is full, all parts are and PDF score have been loaded and the measures are numbered. This would make a great contest march. Enjoy.

This arrangement requires a woodwind quintet with good chamber-music and interpretative skills, but also un-afraid to be tongue-in-cheek as well. Suitable for Halloween time primarily, the music plays with the traditional march to the grave. Your audience will love the good part-writing, the chills and dark humor of this arrangement. The British Grenadiers is a traditional marching song of British, Australian and Canadian military units whose badge of identification features a grenade, the tune of which dates from the 17th century. It is the Regimental Quick March of the Royal Artillery (since 1716), Corps of Royal Engineers (since 1787), the Honourable Artillery Company (since 1716), Grenadier Guards 'The First (later 'Grenadier') Regiment of Foot Guards' (since 1763), and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (since 1763). It is also an authorised march of the Royal Australian Artillery, The Royal Gibraltar Regiment, The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, The Royal Regiment of Canada, The Princess Louise Fusiliers, and The 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles. The standard orchestration for the military band was approved in 1762, when the Royal Artillery Band (initiated in 1557) became recognised officially, and for all other 'grenade' regiments in 1763, when the remaining unofficial bands gained official status. A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! The original is a revolutionary marching song and the repetitions of its verse and chorus were eliminated from the present version, which is destined not for the regular brass band, but for the 'nobler' ensemble of the brass instruments of the symphony orchestra. Easy for students of the respective instruments, who wish to practice ensemble playing on a short, stirring and expressive melody.

It also works well when you are teaching kids how to stay in line or march single file. It is broken up into 2 sections. The first section is for teaching and more relaxed rhythmically. The second section is used for the marching portion. Each child should have a chance using the instruments notated in the music. This song also encourages good listening skills. When the teacher says play the drum, only children with a drum should play. It also increases use of motor skills with the different actions such as shake, scrape etc.
