This is a colorful arrangement the third Marche Militaire in E-flat for concert band. It's a little gem with enough delightful melody, high spirits, and audience appeal to stand proudly beside its renowned sibling.This arrangement interprets Schubert's march for a modern band, but it alludes to the sound of early 20th century European marches. The horns have interesting and important parts rather than the usual pecking afterbeats! The Preußischer Präsentiermarsch (Prussian Inspection March), also known as the Präsentiermarsch Friedrich Wilhelms III., is a German military march composed by Frederick William III of Prussia sometime around 1820. A traditional inspection march used in every German military since the mid-19th century, this is the traditional inspection and colors presentation march of the German Federal Armed Forces, the Bundeswehr. It is also played during visits by foreign leaders to Germany by the Staff Band of the Bundeswehr (German: Stabsmusikkorps der Bundeswehr) during arrival honors ceremonies. It is also a favorite piece of German marching bands, played in civil functions and parades. In Bolivia this has become the standard marchpast piece of the Bolivian Navy, but adapted in slow time.

Cádiz is a comic-lyric-dramatic national episode (zarzuela) in two acts, divided into nine paintings, with music by Federico Chueca and JoaquÃn Valverde, with a libretto by Javier de Burgos. It premiered at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid, on November 20, 1886. Cádiz (which is pronounced KAH-dis and not KAY-dis) is a Spanish seaport and naval base on the Southwest shore of the Atlantic Ocean, between the Portuguese border and the Strait of Gibraltar. (Cadiz, which is pronounced KAY-dis, is a little town in Western Kentucky on Interstate 24, about 20 miles west of Hopkinsville.) This march is one of many popular military marches in Spain.

A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. At the age of 20 he became an instrumentalist in the Leibgrenadier Regiment 8 in Frankfurt an der Oder and in 1843 he became the band's conductor. In 1865 he became the director of all Bands of the Königlich-Preußische III: Armee-Korps. Preussens Gloria is possibly the best known of his 60 marches. Randall McDonald (A0.1006525). This is a transcription for band of the fifth Pomp and Circumstance March by Edward Elgar, in its entirety. Although unknown except through a few orchestra recordings, it is an example of Elgar at his finest. It was complete in 1930, about 25 years after Elgar completed the rest of his Opus 39. Pitched in the original key of Ab /C, the march is very playable at the intermediate level. There is some very interesting contrapuntal work, especially in the trio sections.

In this composition, the rhythms are syncopated and accented. The use of accidentals will help students practice combinations of fingerings not always used. Three clarinet and three trumpet parts are included. The melody is passed to the lower voices at one point to give the march contrast and added interest.

PROGRAM NOTE: Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert of Premieres each May. He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year. Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart). The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old. The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D, two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum. I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas, bass drum, and glockenspiel. As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for young, less experienced players. I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is probably the one which will probably need to be played.
