Descriptive Pieces for guitar solo are snippets of ongoing efforts to create new guitar music. It is a representation of a search for sounds - things the guitar can do that I love and enjoy. These pieces are representative of attempts to create interesting sounding music compositions that are effective in evoking certain feelings or moods. These are older pieces recently reformulated and edited, and still sound fresh and new to my ears, so I like them and I hope you will too. I have tried to include all fingerings and indications to make them clearer for the performer. Ideally, there should not be anything too challenging in these pieces as it is all attempting to be idiomatic for the guitar - that is the goal, anyway! - SN 2019

A suite of short pieces for solo guitar intended to capture a unique yet popular idiosyncratic sound. Some of these are new works, some have been re-worked from older ideas. They all incorporate the idea of popular rock style guitar music being combined with standard classical guitar technique and notation.Andante Tremolo creates an eerie yet nostalgic mood with a sixteenth note tremolo figure at the beginning that bursts into a middle section utilizing pull offs to open strings and a more rapid tremolo. It features a descending melodic figure that leads to nowhere... Anniversary Theme is a half-remembered hum-along melody at the end of the formal celebration when the chairs are being put away but the decorations are still up. It uses simple harmonies that don't really make sense but just follow that same half-forgotten melody, cadencing here and there when they feel like it. Cloudburst Arpeggio focuses on the chime-like campanella effect produced by a descending slur pulled-off to an open string, and then hammering it back on again. It begins with a straight-ahead arpeggio pattern going through a standard chord change, and then jumps off the edge of the cliff into other areas...Mobile is a perpetual motion machine that rocks its way into an Arabic sounding riff in the middle. The low D tuning allows utilization of a drone on the high open D string that produces interesting sonic effects allowing for unique sounds to pull off to open strings.

Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938413). Piano Trio (B44) was written in the spring of 1991 for David Johnson and the trio which he was forming in Cologne. The work is in three movements:-1. Structures The three instruments build differing structural patterns based on a 12-note row. The violin and 'cello often complement each other, but the piano rarely joins them and tries to pull the music towards a diatonic tonal language, eventually succeeding to end in G major. The movement is in arch form, the second half being based on the retrogrades of the note row. 2. Textures Most forms of sound textures are used, including col legno and sul ponticello for the strings, while the piano occasionally employs soft-headed timpani sticks both on the keyboard and the interior of the instrument. Again the movement is in arch form, with a central section incorporating a miniature scherzo, with a trio section parodying the palm court trio style with a tune of sickly sentimentality. [ This movement may be played separately under the title Einer Kleiner Alptraum - A Little Night... mare] 3. Metamorphoses The notes which will eventually become a Scottish folk tune are hidden either in the repeated notes or in the left hand of the piano, either singly or in harmony. After a neo- classical exposition, using a serial melody, progress is quickly halted by the use of some of the notes of the folk tune being arranged into the theme of Weber's Turandot which was used by Hindemith in his Symphonic Metamorphoses . This pulls the music into a slightly more tonal frame work which becomes more pronounced after a reference to the theme of the slow movement of the Eroica symphony used in Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen. From then onwards, tonality, or rather modality, is established and the folk tune style is maintained with simplicity to the end, except for a miniscule coda reminiscent of the opening of the movement. Creative Strings is a collection of works designed to lead beginning to advanced students through their first experiences as improvisers. Each piece is composed of four parts that can roughly be described as melody, harmony, accompaniment and bass line. All four parts are available for the violin, viola and cello. The bass has one part. An optional piano part is also provided. The the ideal distribution is Vln. 1, Vln. 2, Vla. 3, and Cello 4. However the intentionally redundant parts allow for flexible combinations of instruments. If for example, no violas or cellos are available, a violin choir could still cover the parts. The same would hold true for a non-traditional quartet such as 3 violins and 1 cello or any other grouping. Overlapping parts can also be used to equalize an unbalanced orchestra such as 20 violins and 1 viola player by having some of the violins double the viola part.
