Here's a lovely, lyrical tune that's ideal for use during Holy Week or as a meditative prelude, offertory, or communion selection for trombone (or euphonium, cello) and piano.Saw Ye My Savior? is an early 19th-century American folk hymn with a tune that predates it by perhaps 100 years or more. Both the text and the tune seem to have been freely adapted to the subject of the song (whether secular or sacred) and the singer, which is typical of folk songs and folk hymns handed down from one generation to the next. For example, the text of the hymn, which begins Saw ye my Savior, saw ye my Savior, saw ye my savior and my God? is similar to that of an English folk song, Saw you my father, saw you my mother, saw you my true love John?In the 1858 edition of William Walker's shape-note hymnal, The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion, the source cited for the text and tune is Baptist Harmony (1834), p. 477. However, William Hauser and Benjamin Turner's collection, The Olive Leaf (1878), refers to the tune as a Scotch air; and certainly, the Scotch snap rhythm in measures 3 and 4 of the tune lend credence to that. The website, hymnary.org, cites Saw Ye My Savior? as having been published in 167 hymnals (all prior to 1979 but one). Two similar tunes, CRUCIFIXION (Southern Harmony) and ATONEMENT are associated with the text. Because the subject of the text is Christ's crucifixion (see representative text here), Saw Ye My Savior? has often been used as a choral anthem in Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday worship services. Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence is a eucharistic hymn translated from the fifth-century Liturgy of St. James and set to a 17th-century French carol.In this particular liturgy (attributed to St. James the Less, first bishop of Jerusalem), a hymn of preparation and adoration is sung by the celebrating priest as the communion bread and wine is brought to the altar of the Lord. The Anglican priest and hymnodist Gerard Moultrie (1829-1885) translated and paraphrased the hymn, whose opening words are based on the words of the prophets Habakkuk (But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him. 2:20) and Zechariah (Be silent, all flesh, before the Lord, for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling. 2:13).Ralph Vaughan Williams, editor of the English Hymnal of 1906, adapted a French carol dating from the 17th century and published in Chansons Populaires des Provinces de France (1860) for Moultrie's text, naming the hymn tune PICARDY for the region of France from which it is thought to originate.Contemporary, jazz-flavored harmonies characterize this arrangement for trombone and piano.©2019 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.com

?Shepherds? Rocking Carol? is a traditional Czechoslovakian folk tune (?Hajej, nynej, Jezisku?) with lyrics loosely translated by the Anglican clergyman, Percy Dearmer. With Ralph Vaughan Williams, Dearmer was co-editor of The English Hymnal (1906) as well as The Oxford Book of Carols (1928), in which his translation, ?Little Jesus, Sweetly Sleep,? appears with the Czech tune.
This arrangement for young/developing band is an ideal vehicle for the budding oboist, featuring the oboe on melody in the first presentation of the tune and recapitulating at the work?s end. (A clarinet solo / substitute for oboe part is provided.)
Although conservative in range and technical demands, ?Shepherds? Rocking Carol? incorporates a variety of instrumental, dynamic, and harmonic contrasts that make it both simple and elegant, and ideal for developing musicianship in every section of the band.

All Things Bright and Beautiful is a beloved hymn written by Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895), an Anglo-Irish poet known for her hymns There is a Green Hill Far Away and Once in Royal David's City as well as her metrical paraphrase of St. Patrick's Breastplate (a prayer attributed to Patrick, patron saint of Ireland), known by its opening words, I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity. An exposition of the clause of the Apostles' Creed that describes God as maker of heaven and earth, All Things Bright and Beautiful was published in Alexander's Hymns for Little Children in 1848. It was later included in The English Hymnal (1906) with a tune composed by W.H. Monk in 1887.All Things Bright and Beautiful is also frequently sung to the hymn tune ROYAL OAK, adapted from a 17th-century English folk tune, The Twenty-Ninth of May and published in the collection of English country dances, The Dancing Master, in 1686. UPC: 000308023831.The first volume of Creative Hymn Accompaniments by Gerhard Krapf met with wide acceptance, and The Sacred Music Press is pleased to offer this companion collection of 31 well-known hymn tunes for general and seasonal use. The organ accompaniments included here avoid extreme departures from traditional harmonies, and instead provide solid and refreshing alterations which will add interest and variety. Use of these accompaniments need not be restricted to a final stanza. Since each accompaniment is playable on one or two manuals, the organ introduction or a selected stanza may feature the tune played on a solo stop or combination. A contrasting stanza may then be played on one manual with principals and mixtures which support the congregational singing. Slight rhythmic adjustments may be necessary in some hymns to fit the variants which exist among different hymnals. Not difficult, and a handy master index for both volumes is provided.

The Sonata Hymnica series by composer-pianist James Siddons explores the ethos of American rural hymns and spirituals to create evocations of the deeper, larger meaning of familiar church melodies and their words. These sonatas are but partly about the specific melodies and words, and mostly about their meaning in spiritual contemplation . . . and the piano, resonating, reverberant, at times whispering---as a sacred harp. In Sonata Hymnica No. 7, which calls for a soprano soloist, liturgical dancers, and two pianos (4 hands), three 19th-century hymns (words and music) serve as core material from which the music is developed. Movement I, “Climbing Higher,†is based on the African American spiritual “We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.†The sustained chords, open harmony, and hammer-stroke rhythm evoke the ascent of a mountain climber. Movement II, “The Solid Rock,†is based on the hymn “My Hope is Built on Nothing Less†(1834) . The soprano sings brief lines from the hymn, interspersed with long passages for the pianos (only) that explore many tonal and rhythmic qualities of the original hymn tune. The driving harmony, albeit in duple meter, makes this the scherzo movement of this sonata. Movement III, “On Snowy Wings,†is based on “O Come, Angel Band†by the New England Methodist preacher Jefferson Hascall (1807-1887). In addition to the soprano singer, the appearance of liturgical dancers as angels with “snowy wings†brings this old hymn into the 21st century. Performance duration: 16 minutes.
