Cello,Piano - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1487803 Composed by Pietro Antonio Locatelli. Arranged by David Starkweather. Classical. Score and part. 31 pages. Artaria Editions #1064741. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1487803). Three movements from these two sonatas became part of the cello literature due to an arrangement by Alfredo Piatti(1822-1901). Piatti's arrangement, while extending the literature for cello, took considerable liberty with the material. The three movements of the Locatelli-Piatti sonata are originally movements from the two Locatelli violin sonatas arranged in this edition for cello and continuo. Piatti's arrangement used the second and third movements of the Sonata in D Major, Op. 6 No. 6 , and the first movement of the Sonata in D Minor, Op. 6 No. 12. Pietro Antonio Locatelli (1695-1764) was an Italian composer and violinist who moved to Amsterdam in 1729. He was a virtuoso violinist, and his compositions are all concertos, sonatas and violin caprices. The twelve violin sonatas of Opus 6,1 published in Amsterdam in 1737, are considered to be among Locatelli's best works. The sonatas of Opus 6 generally follow the pattern found in No.6: a three movement scheme with a slow first movement, a fast middle movement, and concluding with a third movement set of variations, often on a minuet theme. No. 12 is a surprise, having five movements the last of which is a Capriccio, a predominantly solo movement subtitled Prova del intonatione. David Starkweather.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - SKU: A0.933520 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, Cees Nieuwenhuizen. Classical. Score. 48 pages. Upstream Music #482215. Published by Upstream Music (A0.933520). There are many more unfinished than completed compositions of Beethoven that have been preserved. ln these fragments one sees ideas for individual works. A large number of sketchbooks and sketches from the composer were preserved and are housed in libraries and private collections all over the globe. Some sketches are no more than brief experiments or short elaborated ideas, but there are also fragments preserved that nearly give us a complete picture of a composition. In the so-called Kafka sketchbook, which was published in 1970 in London, approximately 500 fragments of manuscripts were bundled that stem from 1786 - 1799. The Fantasia Sonata in D (deest 45) for piano forte in three parts, was hidden in the archives since 1792. This sonata of the young Beethoven, with striking similarities to the Moonlight sonata and the Pastorale has never been performed on stage. Young pianotalent Martin Oei played it for the first time in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, October 21st, 2012. The large, over 1100 bars comprising torso now known as Fantasia Sonata in D from 1792, cannot be called a sketch anymore, although Beethoven has not completed the work and used many ideas in other, later works. The reconstruction of the sketches was done by the Dutch Beethoven musicologist and composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The piece was probably written in Bonn, three years before he started to write his first official piano sonata of a series of 32 sonatas. In November 1792 Beethoven went from Bonn to Vienna to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Beethoven rapidly proceeded to make his mark as a brilliant keyboard performer and as a gifted young composer with a number of works to his credit. In 1795 his first mature published works appeared, and his career was officially launched. Striking harmonies The re-using of previously drafted material is quite common in Beethoven's works. Apparently the material wasn't yet ripe enough at the time of its origination, or perhaps Beethoven changed his mind with regards to the new composition. This could very well be so regarding the torso from Kafka’s sketchbook that we now call the Piano Fantasia sonata in D. This piece contains 1100 bars of music, not taking into account the alternative bars. The piece is composed by Beethoven in 1792 - 1793 and was set up as a tripartite sonata in D with remarkable abnormalities in terms of form and content. There are striking harmonies that cannot be found in other works composed in that same period. It’s possible that the composer didn’t have the courage to publish it or that indeed the time was not yet ripe for it. Finally the composer let the draft go and never came back to it. Or did he? Thematic similarities We find phrases in several later works that share similarities with ideas and themes from Fantasia sonata in D. The first part of Fantasia sonata has the same theme as the trio of the third movement of Symphony no. 7 (in A Major Opus 92). Even the key and also the rhythm in 3/4 time are the same. This cannot be a coincidence. Similar mood and thematic parallels can be found in the Pastorale, the Sonata for piano no. 15 (Opus 28): it is striking that this piece is also composed in D and in 3/4 time. We find similar dramatic expression in the Sonata for piano no. I 7 in d minor Opus 31 no. 2. The second movement of the Fantasia sonata nearly has the same theme as the second movement of the Sonata for piano no. 23 in minor (the Appassionato Opus 57). Martin Oei, Daiel Wayenberg, Cees Nieuwenhuizen at The World Premiere in The Concertgebouw Beethoven begins the third movement of the Fantasia sonata with the main theme of the first movement, but now in e minor. lts appearance in minor is an entirely new idea. Nevertheless Beethoven doesn't elaborate the idea any further because it disappears after 29 bars. Now a new agitated theme starts in d minor, which was announced in the first movement, but now reappears in its complete.

Jmsgu3 #800938. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1202559). Sonata No. 6, “Durnitz†for String OrchestraScore and performance parts:  Score: 66 pages. Duration: ca. 29:28 Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284, also known as the Durnitz Sonata, is a solo piano piece composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1775. It is one of Mozart's more complex and ambitious sonatas and is generally regarded as one of his greatest works for the instrument. The sonata is divided into three movements:1.   Allegro - The first movement is a fast-paced and energetic sonata-allegro form, characterized by its lively theme and virtuosic passages. The movement begins with a bold and dramatic opening statement, followed by a series of contrasting themes and variations. The development section explores new harmonic and rhythmic territory, while the recapitulation brings the movement full circle with a restatement of the main themes.2.   Rondeau en Polonaise - The second movement is a graceful and elegant rondo in the style of a polonaise, a popular dance of the time. The main theme is a lilting melody that is first presented by the right hand and then repeated with variations throughout the movement. The middle section features a contrasting theme in a minor key, which is then developed and expanded upon in the latter half of the movement.3.   Theme and Variations - The final movement is a set of six variations on a theme, which is introduced at the beginning of the movement. Each variation explores a different aspect of the theme, from playful embellishments to dramatic flourishes. The final variation brings the piece to a rousing and triumphant close.Overall, Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284, is a masterful example of the composer's virtuosity and innovation and remains a beloved and influential work in the piano repertoire. Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284 is also known as the Dürnitz Sonata because it is believed to have been composed for Count Johann Joseph Anton von Dürnitz, an accomplished amateur flautist who was a patron of Mozart.Mozart was in Munich in 1775, and he met Dürnitz there. According to Mozart's letters to his father, Dürnitz played the flute very well, and Mozart was impressed by his abilities. It is believed that Mozart composed this sonata specifically for Dürnitz, who may have performed it with Mozart accompanying him on the piano. No concrete evidence supports the theory that the sonata was named after Dürnitz, but it is widely accepted as the most likely explanation for the nickname. In any case, the sonata remains one of Mozart's most popular and beloved works for solo piano.

String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1202033 Composed by W. A. Mozart (1756 – 1791). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Chamber,Classical,Contest,Festival,Traditional,Wedding. 94 pages. Jmsgu3 #800635. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1202033). Sonata No. 6, “Durnitz†for String Quartet Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284, also known as the Durnitz Sonata, is a solo piano piece by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1775. It is one of Mozart's more complex and ambitious sonatas and is generally regarded as one of his greatest works for the instrument. The sonata is divided into three movements:1.   Allegro - The first movement is a fast-paced and energetic sonata-allegro form characterized by its lively theme and virtuosic passages. The movement begins with a bold and dramatic opening statement, followed by contrasting themes and variations. The development section explores new harmonic and rhythmic territory, while the recapitulation brings the movement full circle with a restatement of the main themes.2.   Rondeau en Polonaise - The second movement is a graceful and elegant rondo in the style of a polonaise, a popular dance of the time. The central theme is a lilting melody first presented by the right hand and then repeated with variations throughout the movement. 284 is also known as the Dürnitz Sonata because it is believed to have been composed for Count Johann Joseph Anton von Dürnitz, an accomplished amateur flutist who was a patron of Mozart. Mozart was in Munich in 1775, and he met Dürnitz there. In any case, the sonata remains one of Mozart's most popular and beloved works.

Artaria Editions AE434Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one). Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including four sonatas for violin and fortepiano; a fifth sonata, in D minor, was written in 1777 expressly for violin and clavicembalo, representing a different sort of piece than the more common duo sonata. The date of the C major sonata, the earlier of two works in this key, is not known, although it was probably written during Kraus's first years in Stockholm; stylistic evidence strongly suggests that it, and its companion piece, the Sonata in D major (VB 159), date from the later part of that period 1780-1782. Kraus was a proficient performer on both instruments and his sonatas, which display all his usual musical ingenuity and technical finish, are highly attractive works.Allan Badley.

Cello Solo - Level 5 - SKU: A0.552888 Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by Branimir Pusticki. Romantic Period. Individual part. 28 pages. Branimir Pusticki #162473. Published by Branimir Pusticki (A0.552888). Transcriptions and arrangements were quite popular and effective means for a romantic composer to promote new works, reach a wider playing audience or boost sales of sheet music. Brahms was certainly not a stranger to this practice: the composer himself produced many transcriptions for piano or piano duo, but also versions of clarinet sonatas and the cello e-minor sonata for viola. The beautiful first violin sonata exists in a version for cello by one of Brahms’ most prolific and favourite arranger Paul Klengel - but perhaps it is unfair to ask a pianist to re-learn that piece in the new key of D-major. In comparison to the boisterous and vigorous Op. 99 cello sonata, the d-minor violin sonata offers an introspective drama of a restless composer, well suited to the darker voice of the cello. With the constant advancements in playing technique and modern cello strings, the balance is less of a problem. Thus, the piano part remains unchanged, and subtle changes in cello register can be implemented to utilize the whole range and character of the instrument, while keeping the integrity of the original ideas and musical material.

Violin solo - intermediate - SKU: S9.Q49686 Composed by Giuseppe Tartini. This edition: Sheet music. Violin Library. Downloadable. Schott Music - Digital #Q49686. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q49686). Key: D major. It was the Devil's Trill Sonata that immortalized Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) although said work is just one of a vast number of concertos and sonatas for strings and especially for his instrument, the violin. The present 'Sonata in Re maggiore per Violino solo' is a technically demanding, yet not cluttered work. The slow movements, the introductory Andante cantabile and the Largo headed TASSO, composed over the melody of a Venetian gondola song, give the soloist the opportunity for cantabile playing. The playful Minuetto clearly breathes the spirit of the post-Baroque era while the Allegro assai coming second mixes strongly gripping passages with beguilingly sentimental ones. The characteristic ambiguous movement is repeated after the Minuetto, thus completing the solo sonata.

Baroque,Concert,Graduation,Wedding. 26 pages. Piper Publications #6027023. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811762). This Sonata is the last of a set of ten Sonatas in 4 parts (2 violins, cello & basso continuo) dedicated to Lady Rhodia Cavendish and published in 1697, two years after Purcell's death by his widow. The 5 movements, Adagio, Canzona, Grave, Largo & Allegro are intended to be performed as one continuous piece. In arranging the Sonata for flute, oboe, clarinet in A and bassoon, changes of register have been necessary to suit the ranges and character of the wind instruments. All editings are shown in parentheses ( ) or [ ] with dashed lines for added slurs. Players of intermediate standard will find that the challenge of this sonata is more one of style and precision than technical difficulty. More advanced players will revel in the sheer inventiveness of the short lived Henry Purcell.
