Score and parts. 10 pages. IStrings #6072021. Published by iStrings (A0.875816). Perhaps the most beautiful two Christmas Concertos, written in the Baroque era, both with a last movement Pastorale. Corelli may be better known but Locatelli is at least as beautifully written. Both Pastorales with the modern harp, somewhat similar to the sound of cemballo and stylish with rolled chords by the nature of the instrument. Of coures with the singing voice of the violin!

The motet passes in a pastoral atmosphere beholding the birth of Jesus. With this work, I have finally put music to the same set of texts used by Francis Poulenc for his Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël. The whole set is a tribute to his memory and his powerful influence on my training as a composer.

Notturno Pastorale (pastoral nocturne) is a straightforward piece which begins in C Minor, makes a journey to A-flat Major in the middle section, and closes with a nearly literal recapitulation of the opening section. The music features traditional pastoral melodic and rhythmic motifs in 6/8 time.

In musical terms, a pastorale can be defined as a piece that evokes the feeling of an idyllic rural scene. You might imagine a pasture in the countryside, with a shepherd gently guiding his flock. The inspiration for this Pastorale for String Orchestra arose from the serene natural landscapes of the western United States – mountains, valleys, desert plains and plateaus, complete with flora and fauna somehow eking out their own idyllic existence. As the sun rises and sets over this rustic backdrop, we find a life of ascetic discipline and balance – from the roaming elk herd, to the soaring eagle, to the huddle rows of quaking aspen trees. This piece features a solo viola line that is not too difficult, and would be great for an orchestra looking to feature a budding violist. For the orchestra, this piece also provides a useful exercise in dynamic contrast, uniform articulations, and multiple time signature changes. I hope you enjoy!

Published by Justin Bland (A0.918843). Piano Sonata No. 15 in D major, Op. 28, published in 1801, was named Pastoral or Pastorale by Beethoven's publisher at the time, A. Cranz. The sonata it is admired for the intricacy and technicality in the ease it portrays. It is dedicated to the Count Joseph von Sonnenfels and takes approximately 25 minutes to play.It has been speculated whether the title refers to the sense of countryside and nature (like Symphony 6), or to its sense of calm, simplicity and lightness. In any case, the use of winds in this arrangement helpts to emphasise the general pastoral feeling of the work.
