J.R.R. Tolkien?s TheLord of the Rings is arguably the defining novel of the fantasy genre. Many of the characters in this epic novel arelarger-than-life: Gandalf, Saruman,Aragorn, and others. Tales of the Great Water is comprised of three short stories. Kinship -The Gathering is a tale of friendship conjuring up images of a place where cultures merged, and people from all over gathered. Shoreline Poem is a tale of longing. So many who settled near the shores of the Great Water, once had a life in another place, perhaps in a distant land. Standing on these remote shores, they can only imagine other places or times. Boundless is a tale of sailing. An adventurous romp on the water awaits our hearty sailors in this tale with stories to tell upon their return. Jeffrey Ouper #2033219. Published by Jeffrey Ouper (A0.866193). Faerie Tale Dances is a trio for sopranino recorder, E-flat clarinet, and toy piano commissioned by clarinetist James Applegate. A piccolo can be substituted for the recorder and the toy piano can be substituted with celesta or synthesizer. There are three movements that are about 7-8 minutes in total duration. The movement titles are 1. The Stroke of Midnight, 2. Mirror, Mirror, 3. Pixie Dust. Faerie Tale Dances is a three movement work depicting three different scenes of fairy tales. The first movement, The Stroke of Midnight refers to the story of Cinderella, specifically the ball. At the end of the ball, the clock strikes midnight (which is played by the toy piano) and Cinderella runs from the ball with the prince trailing after her. Mirror, Mirror, the second movement refers to Snow White and the famous scene and line said by the queen mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? In this scene the Queen is startled by the mirrors response that Snow White is the fairest one in the land, begins raging, and then starts creating a poisoned apple. Pixie Dust, the final movement is in reference to the prominence of fairies and magic found throughout fairy tales…the most famous being Tinkerbell of Peter Pan.

Le titre fait référence au peuple de Thrace qui habitait dans les Balkans et plus particulièrement dans le territoire de la Bulgarie actuelle. La pièce est composée en forme A-B-A et le langage utilisé - comme dans la plupart de mes pièces - est basé essentiellement sur des modes et des rythmes issues de la musique des Balkans. Elle est enrichie avec l’utilisation de chromatismes, d’hémioles pour varier la pulsation de base ainsi que de différentes techniques instrumentales.I composed Thracian Tale in 2024 for George Vassilev. The title refers to the people of Thrace who lived in the Balkans and more particularly in the territory of present-day Bulgaria. The piece is composed in A-B-A form and the language used - as in most of my pieces - is based essentially on modes and rhythms from Balkan music. It is enriched with the use of chromatisms, hemiolas to vary the basic pulsation as well as different instrumental techniques.

I showed the score for 'Play-Time' to a friend, Boryana Petkova a very talented pianist from Bulgaria, to whom I eventually dedicated 'the Dancing Bear'. After showing her 'Play-Time' she commented that part of it sounded like a Bulgarian folk dance. The potential of this intrigued me quite a lot so I sketched out a few bars intent on writing another piano piece based around this idea (the melodic line first heard in the Tuba part in the fifth bar after letter A). However, upon discussing these sketches with Boryana she mentioned they no longer sounded particularly Bulgarian. As this was the main aim of the sketches that eventually became 'The Dancing Bear' it is fair to say I was slightly miffed. Undeterred I decided to shift focus and write for the instrument I knew best, the Tuba. The 'Bear' part of the title refers to the tendency of composers to use Tubas to represent angry bears, most famously in Stravinsky's ballet 'Petrushka'. Musically it still contains quite a few elements of eastern European dance including the use of drones, some typical scales with flattened seconds and sevenths as well as the rhythmic oscillation between bars of 2,2,2,2 and 3,3,2 quaver (8th note) division. However, the goal for me was to writes a slightly humorous piece, with a technically demanding Tuba part, that could show off the musicians abilities and still retain the feel of a rhythmical dance.
