It has been collected by composers as noteworthy as Ralph Vaughan Williams and performed by some of the world’s best-loved folk acts.The text tells of a young girl walking by a river, speaking to a stranger of her lost love and deep sadness. The modal inflection of the melody is typical of the traditional English style and this setting shares the melodic material between instruments. This version also passes between two keys to make a piece of greater substance suitable for concert performance.

Léo Delibes was a French composer, best known for his ballets and operas. His works include the ballets Coppélia , Sylvia (1876) and the opera Lakmé . His later ballets Coppélia and Sylvia were key works in the development of modern ballet. In the opinion of several critics, the score of Sylvia surpasses that of most others of his works. Tchaikovsky was greatly impressed by Sylvia. This arrangement is of the fanfare, Les chasseresses from Act 1 of Sylvia. This is a Grade 4 piece. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808646). Among the most noteworthy works by Clément Philibert Léo Delibes are two ballets, Coppélia (1870) and Sylvia (1876). Delibes based the latter on a Aminta, a play written by Torquato Tasso three centuries earlier, and it is populated by characters such as Eros, Diana, Orion, as well as Aminta and, of course, Sylvia. The third act opens in the forest with a celebration of the wine vintage, the Grand cortège de Bacchus (March and Procession of Bacchus). The March is exciting and brassy (enough so that the 1982-1986 television series, Knight Rider, used it for a musical theme!). My Brother Sylvest' also known as Big Strong Man, is an American song, but often performed by English folk singers and Irish bands.My Brudda Sylvest' was written in 1908, words by Jesse Lasky and Sam Stern, music by Fred Fisher.The song is written in an Italian-American dialect about the singer's eponymous brother, described in hyperbolic terms as a man of legendary strength capable of extraordinary feats. The original lyric has him blowing out a house fire, pushing the ocean away to allow him to walk to Italy, killing fifty thousand [native American] Indians, and drinking the ocean dry.Subsequent versions changed the references from the boxer John L. Sullivan to the Jeffries-Johnson fight of 1910, to American boxer Jack Dempsey, who started boxing in 1914, and even to John Conteh of Great Britain, who fought in the 1970s. Other changes have included the saving of the RMS Lusitania, sunk during the first World War, and swimming from New York to Italy, drinking all the water in the sea, playing every instrument in a brass band in a visit to Japan.
