BROKEN DOLL: A full length family play in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of original musicals. With Drama, Comedy and Song . This is an educational piece for Directors or Drama Teachers in education or the Performing Arts. Set in Heaven, Broken Doll tells the story of a group of recently deceased young women looking down on a teenage girl who is contemplating suicide. They are not told why and the role of the group is to persuade the girl's Spirit, to return to its host. There are a wide range of characters within the piece and although they all have one thing in common, (they are all female), their outlooks and life experiences are naturally all very different and each has an opinion on the cause of the young girl's demeanour and to come up with with a proposition on how to save the girlâ€™s life. This is presented through the music and dialogue. Vocally the cast will have different capabilities and timbres.This diversity of styles in characters and the memorable musical content should appeal to teenagers as well as family members. The stage set is very basic, making the overall cost much lower, allowing it to be performed anywhere with a suitable space. It also has the potential to be filmed and the subsequent DVD could then be made available to anyone working with young people. This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense â€“ like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head â€“ I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that Iâ€™m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll.Â One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing â€œBeyond the Seaâ€ over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasnâ€™t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didnâ€™t mean what I thought they meantâ€¦ Theyâ€™re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind ofâ€¦ I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them.Â Somewhere beyond the seaSheâ€™s there watching for meâ€¦Itâ€™s far beyond the starsItâ€™s near beyond the moonÂ And the lyrics end with them meeting, â€œWeâ€™ll meet beyond the shore, weâ€™ll kiss just like before,â€ and the song ends with: â€œand never again Iâ€™ll go sailing.â€ Itâ€™s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan.Â Performance Suggestions:Â The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional â€œscat syllablesâ€ and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson and Sara Gazarek improvise on ballads for inspiration.

I was exposed to an entirely different culture and learned that the city really didnâ€™t sleep after all. The piece starts with the decline of the sun as the shadows grow longer and the creatures of the night begin to emerge beneath the stars. Secondly, we observe the midnight moon which acts as our illumination in the dark of night. Continuing on, the piece begins its celestial dance among the stars of the Northern hemisphere and finally ends with the emergence of dawn â€“ the night slipping away like fragile tendrils of fog, or the vague ether of a dream. The original version was written in the mid-1700s in Naples by the Catholic Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, Alfonso Maria deâ€™ Ligouri. At that time it was called Quanno nascette Ninno and was written in the Neapolitan dialect in the style of a pastorale.The song was later re-written in Italian by Pope Pius IX and thereafter it became famous as a Christmas carol all over the world.Originally containing seven verses, todayâ€™s performances of the carol in Italy generally include only the first two verses. In fact, the title, Signs of the Times, is actually a play on words of the term time signatures, which is the main gimmick of the piece. But we cannot let them deceive us. If you follow the stars in the sea, you will sink like the rocks. Down you will go into the abyss chasing an illusion you believed were the real stars. If you dig deeper until you are covered in mud, your eyes will become used to the abyss until you forget what you were even chasing. And if you look up at the stars above, you would quickly shy away from them as it causes affliction in your eyes. The piece starts with a brief fanfare, followed immediately by a rousing melody in the style of an old sea-shanty. Images of sailing upon an endless sea of stars come to mind as a tranquil nocturne is presented, but the peace is shattered as cutlasses and sabers clash in a dogfight sure to end in Davy Jonesâ€™ locker! The music swells to a dramatic conclusion as our mighty galleon surges across a stormy sea. Instrumentation The Privateers comes with full sets of both concert/stage and marching/field parts, allowing for great flexibility in your performance venues. Contemporary marching bands and drum & bugle corps utilize specialized field percussion which is typically not used in a concert setting. With this piece, the use of outdoor percussion (quad toms and a tonal bass drum line) onstage is encouraged, although not required. A single bass drum line is included which may be used instead of (or in addition to) the tonal bass drum line, and the Quad Toms part may be omitted. A piano part is included, primarily for optional use indoors as a color instrument for the ensemble. However, smaller bands in particular may find it useful for filling out the accompaniment line if instrumentation is limited. Optionally, a very small ensemble of melodic instruments could be used, with the piano acting as a full-fledged accompaniment. Several optional parts are included, such as Eb and Bb Horn, for ensembles with limited instrumentation. Also, the two Low Winds parts should be distributed equally across trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tenor sax players. Double reed parts are not included. Double these instruments on appropriate parts to suit the needs of your ensemble. Teaching Points Meter â€“ The alternation of 6/8 and 4/4 with a constant pulse (rather than a constant 8th note) provides an excellent opportunity to teach your students to shift the subdivision of the beat from triple to duple and back again. Chromaticism & Accidentals â€“ There is a recurring passage which features the prominent use of secondary dominants, or circle of fifths chord motion. Students can learn a few less-than-common accidentals and enharmonics, while also getting a larger lesson in music theory.

At the time, we thought things couldnâ€™t get worse, but then followed more extreme weather events, insect and rodent plagues, and a deadly pandemic that brought the world to its knees. All these things are connected, the result of humanityâ€™s exploitative relationship with the planet and its other inhabitants. But we continue to deny the problems and to fail to act. As a species, in our more optimistic moments, we talk about having great opportunities to reinvent, that to live the status quo means that we will be faced with an untenable future. Talking about it is one thing but as far as I see it, we are not taking any opportunities to act. It is clear that we do not learn from our mistakes. As Spanish American writer George Santayana once said â€œThose who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.â€ It is from this notion that this song was born. Written in the Stars is about societyâ€™s propensity to go through cycles of behaviour, never learning from the mistakes of the past.
