There are many types of music in the book: etudes, exercises, warm-ups, backwards and upside down duets (one person plays normally, the other person reads the music in an unusual way), improvised music, and composition. Jerry Gray, as a GI sergeant-musician during World War II, arranged it in march style for his boss, Glenn Miller, then a major and director of the Army Air Forces Orchestra. This is an adaptation of Gray's fabulous arrangement, taken down a step to put it in a friendlier key. It's arranged for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. Handy was one of the most influential songwriters in the United States.Handy was an educated musician who used elements of folk music in his compositions. He was scrupulous in documenting the sources of his works, which frequently combined stylistic influences from various performers.W.C. Handy wrote numerous compositions including St Louis Blues, Memphis Blues, Yellow Dog Blues, along with this march Hail to the Spirit of Freedom written in 1915. This march was written for the Lincoln Jubilee commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation held in Chicago. There are quotes Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, Columbia, Gem of the Ocean, Hail Columbia, My Old Kentucky Home, Old Black Joe, Hot Time in the Old Town, Dixie. Yankee Doodle, and the bugle call Reveille.
