The Home Coming March (1908) - Concert Band Score and Parts PDF Music by: ET Paull Of course, eventually, all the soldiers and sailors had to eventually come home from all the battles and Paull had that eventuality well covered also. The artwork on the front cover (of unknown origin) is one that is full of imagery that covers all aspects of the services, Army and Navy and is full of patriotic and familial ideals. The border lists all of the US States and the corner pictures depict aspects of homecoming. The main image is a parade of victory. Let's let Paull explain it all to us as he did on the inside cover. Why This Piece Of Music Was Named The Home Coming March Explanatory When the author had about completed the music of the present march, it occurred to him that it might be well to have suggestions made from a number of people, recommending a good name for same, for after all there is considerable in a name. He, therefore, had a special advertisement placed in several of the leading music Journals throughout the country, offering a prize of $10.00 in gold to anyone suggesting a name that would be accepted. Over three thousand names were sent in from all parts of the country, even from far away New Zealand and Australia, in which countries the author's marches are universal favorites. Included in the letters received was one from Mr. W. C. Bates, Secretary of the Sheffield Advertising Agency of New York and Chicago, in which he suggested the name The Home Coming March. After due consideration, this name was accepted, and the prize was awarded and paid to Mr. Bates, who stated that he was prompted to recommend this name on account of having been present during the impressive celebration of Old Home Week in Boston, Mass., last year. Probably no one idea is so universally dominant in the mind of the Human Race as that of home, or matters pertaining to home. The author believes that the name selected is one that will appeal to everyone; as the many pleasant associations with the words Home Coming are almost without limit. The title page of this march is without any exception the handsomest seen on a piece of music. The main body of the title pace represents a street scene, with buildings decorated and shows a handsome royal Arch of Welcome in the foreground, gaily decorated with flags, emblems, and bunting. A band is shown passing under the arch, leading a procession of the Home Guard, and thousands of people waving handkerchiefs, banners, flags, etc. Four smaller scenes also appear on the page, one representing the Home Coming of the soldier from war; another scene shows the Home Coming of the sailor boys embarking from their battleships; another scene represents the Home Coming reunion of the family and loved ones; the fourth scene represents the Home Coming of the father from work, where a little tot has been watching and waiting, and runs to meet him. The whole design of the title page is then surrounded by a border of differently designed medallions, on which appears the names of all the States of the Union, making without a doubt, the most unique and attractive title page ever conceived for a piece of music. One thing Paull mastered early in his career was the art of overstatement! Musically, this march is beginning to show the repetitiveness of many of Paull's works, especially evident as time passed. Once Paull found the formula (a fabulous cover and a playable, rousing march) that sold music, he stuck with it and was quite successful as a result.This arrangement is for Full Concert Band with the original optional piano part ( Not on the score). War, by its nature, claims the lives of those who enter it, and over the course of history, many have fallen in the service of their countries who have gone to war for one reason or another. Fanfare for the Fallen seeks to honor those who have fallen in service and conjure the image of them marching into their glorious afterlife. Christianity holds that there is no greater love than laying down one's life for another, and many cultures believe that dying in battle yields glory in the great beyond. So whether marching into heaven, Valhalla or some other bright light at the end of the tunnel, let this music provide the soundtrack of trumpeting angels and one last ticker tape parade as these warriors are welcomed into their eternal home.This is a piece of intermediate difficulty with a nice melody and a John Williams' Olympic Fanfare feel to it. While the trumpets soar in their high registers for the heralding sections, the range for the rest of the piece (and the rest of the band) stays mostly in the center of the instruments. While 32nd notes are found here and there, the tempo sitting at around 80 keeps their difficulty, as well as the 16th note woodwind runs, in check. George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.Mp3 provided is a midi extracted from the composition program.

The musical interpretation of welcoming is stepwise motion, either up or down, around a pitch center. Perhaps this might be heard as an opening of the door, or an opening of the heart.An interlude leads to the second song, Make Me an Instrument of Thy Peace, a musical setting of the Prayer of Saint Francis. The accompaniment is sparse, with material reminiscent of the welcoming pattern in the first song. This song alternates between triple meter for the thematic sections (Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace) and duple meter for the more recitative sections (O Divine Master...). The music ends as it began, with simple open fifths accompaniment, this time filling in the chords to express the fullness of the lyrics born to eternal life.A second interlude provides the bridge to the third song, Gaelic Blessing. The text for this song is a series of blessings for peace. The gentle chordal arpeggiations in the piano are intended to provide a peaceful accompaniment. [Once again, the stepwise intervals and recurrent regular rhythms relate to the first song.]In keeping with the simplicity and repetition of the text, the music is formed by a series of four-measure phrases (blessings). The blessings are similar in contour, each spanning an interval of a fourth. Growth is achieved through repetition and some dynamic contrast. However, the principal aesthetic of this song is constancy and gentle flow. Only at the end of the song, when the voice descends into the deep range, is the melodic contour altered, and dynamic contrast introduced. As the voice ends on low tones, the piano line rises, perhaps to the source of peace.Duration: 10 min.

Kantes del verdgel de granadas – Songs from the Pomegranate Garden A Judeo-Spanish song cycle for solo voice and chamber symphony orchestra Composer’s notes: Kantes del verdgel de granadas, or in its English translation: Songs from the Pomegranate Garden, is a cycle of five songs in the Judeo-Spanish dialect, also known as Ladino. The texts, based on folk-poetry, are magical, passionate, and encompass a wide range of human emotions and experiences. We can find in them love and longing, sorrow and death, lightheartedness and folly, as well as burning love and even sexual innuendo. The vocal part portrays different stories and a variety of human characters in each of the five songs. It, thus, ranges in expression from parlando secco to lirico espressivo. The role of the orchestra in this cycle is more than just an accompaniment; it converses with the voice, adds colors and ambience, and serves as a commentary over the sung text. Thus, the orchestral part is equal to, or at times even more predominant than the voice itself. The initiative to write this composition came in response to a specific cultural approach by which creativity based on traditional Judaic material should correspond to four stages in the artistic process: Exploration, Preservation, Interpretation, and Innovation (as translated by the Hebrew terms: חידוש – פירוש – שימור – חיפוש). The main idea behind this initiative was to conserve crucial elements within traditional Jewish folk music, and then, bring about their revival as art music through new contemporary interpretations. Thus, the musical arrangement is partially based on the traditional Ladino tunes and partially original. However, phrases based on old Ladino melodies are starkly modified and composed in such way to completely evoke personal imagery and interpretation. The songs I selected for the cycle were taken from the four-volume collection: Chants judéo-espagnols by Isaac Levy. My criteria for the selection was finding lesser-known melodies, yet most intriguing ones and with a strong Judeo-Spanish character. The five songs have various degrees of arrangement vs. original composition: songs 2 and 3, Mi korason and Entre las huertas, for example, are almost unchanged, while songs 1 and 4, Dos amantes and Malato ‘sta el hijo del rey, heavily combine the old Ladino romancero melodies with originally composed material. The concluding song (Nr. 5) is entirely original, but correspond stylistically to the Judeo-Spanish musical language. While all five songs are secular in nature, the ballad Malato ‘sta el hijo del rey (The King’s Son is Ill) has been traditionally sung - according to Isaac Levy - on the night of Tisha B’Av along the scroll of Eicha to bemoan the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Around the Cauldron was inspired by the three witches from Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. With a nod to multi-movement pieces such as Schumann's Scenes From Childhood and Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, Around the Cauldron is comprised of seven short scenes, each of which evokes a mood that resonates with an image of three witches gathered around a cauldron in a dark forest, muttering spells, and adding selected creatures to a bubbling stew. The movements carry individual titles: In Dusk, Pounce, Transmutation, Boiling, Witches Waltz, Newts’ Lament, and Sacrificial. Most of the melodies in the piece were tailored to fit lines from the original Shakespearean text and were also arranged as songs for a production of Macbeth at Ramapo College of New Jersey. Thus, the main theme sets the play’s immortal opening words: Fair is foul and foul is fair / Hover through the fog and filthy air. Honoring the three witches, the piece reflects the number three in its rhythms, which highlight groups of three beats; in its themes, which are constructed of three phrases; and in its instrumentation, which suggests that each instrument represents a different witch. Around the Cauldron was commissioned by Concert Artists Guild with support from the Adele and John Gray Endowment Fund for Lysander Piano Trio, which is fittingly named after another Shakespearean character.

I tried to describe in the utmost detail the emotion the words conveyed to me and the images they suggested. In this composition I have used word-painting, attempting to colour as many words, phrases and situations as possible; hence the score is full of expression markings such as ‘majestic’, ‘with vigour’, ‘lively’, ‘intense’, ‘with affection’ and ‘with verve’. The result is a piece that changes texture rather quickly, and its noble opening theme (‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’) returns only once in abbreviated form (‘He hath filled the hungry with good things’). The following Nunc dimittis has a much more meditative and intimate character with a sparser texture. There are some references to the themes presented in the Magnificat. A motif from the Magnificat, ‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son’, recurs in almost the same form towards the close of the Nunc dimittis, but in a quieter vein and in 4 rather than the 43 of the Magnificat. The Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis may be performed individually.

Mystery of the Hills is an S.A.T.B. choral work describing the wonder of the Flint Hills, a region in East Central Kansas.  I’m not a native Kansan, but whenever I drive through this area, I am enthralled by the infinite sense of expanse and gently rolling terrain. Geologists believe there was an inland seaway that covered central North America starting 290 million years ago. Over time, alternating layers of hard limestone and softer shale rocks formed. It is believed erosion caused the varied elevations of terrain, unique to the slopes of the Flint Hills. These surface layers of limestone and chert prevented the settler’s ability to farm, which in turn preserved the integrity of the soil. Today, the prairie grasses can reach 10 feet tall if not managed.  The rich grasses are prime for feeding livestock. This music attempts to provide images of traveling through the Flint Hills today, while imagining changes over eons of time, due to weather and eventually, human interaction.  Generally, the upper voices provide the imagery and some history, while the lower voices describe a bedrock foundation.  Describing the rock foundation found in the Flint Hills is also a metaphor for human strife and struggle as man, among living flora and fauna, interact with the area. The vocal ranges and harmonies are accessible for young ensembles, whether in development or with years of experience.

Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1402959). This Second String Quartet is in four movements, and runs to over 30 minutes long. The work uses the traditionally expected forms for each movement, as a framework or starting point for departure, but also uses a conceptual title for the work as a whole. In this case 'Locomotion', or the conveying of motion (especially with regards to train travel), was used as a compositional stimulus in creating extended pattern-based textures, as well as the development, or journey, of motifs and themes. Otherwise, there is no particular attempt to evoke the sound of particular modes of transportation, or certain landscapes or scenes. Such imagery is left at the discretion of the listener. Formally, the work begins with a loose sonata form first movement, based around E (modal minor). The second movement, on A, bears the hallmarks of a busy scherzo, while the sentimental slow movement in D minor that follows is based on ground basses, in a ternary form of two varied themes. The extended finale grows out of the previous movement, with a jig-like rondo theme on another ground bass. Contrasting episodes feature modulating material, as well as a secondary theme in C. The final section sees a cyclic return of the first movement's first theme, now at the finale's faster tempo, and in the closing key of G minor. Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden (2009) for clarinet, bass clarinet, pipa, and erhu (score and parts) I composed this piece imagining myself in a garden of images, sonorities, and aromas that all merge in an idyllic moment in time. I have taken a line from one of T.S.Eliot’s poems in the Four Quartets, for my title, Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden. The poem, Burnt Norton, concludes with the poignant truth that humankind cannot bear very much reality. I often wonder whether my work as a composer really has any significance or meaning beyond helping my listeners temporarily escape their personal realities. In recalling Eliot’s line, What might have been and what has been/ point to one end, which is always present I am reminded that a melody, a single line of lyric pitch flow evokes memory in the mind of the listener and that rhythm and accent often draws our attention to the present moving towards the future. So, with these inherent powersof music in mind, it was my goal to create a piece of vibrant and engaging music that relentlessly draws the listener into the present moment. Eliot also alludes to a timeless merging of present and past in this poem. His line, then a cloud passed and the pool was empty brought back memories of being a child watching clouds almost unnoticeably move across the sky. I was similarly inspired to conclude Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden with music that evokes an ecstatic stillness tempered with a longing for the past. WGN

The contrasting timbres of each instrument must work together over both legato and marcato phrases. Fun and driving, this piece perfectly blends the elements of energizing the audience and showcasing the players' abilities. The marimba part for this piece is suitable for a three-octave instrument (F3-F6) and can be performed with two mallets or four. Medium-hard rubber or yarn mallets are recommended. Includes full score and individual parts.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

Death is a common topic in his writings. Yet despite the somber imagery, there is often a strength and resilience. The journey of death is described, but not taken. Death is the adversary, not the ruler. The Hand that Signed the Paper speaks of the often cruel and deadly power of a signed document- a document of taxation, of treaty or of counting casualties. The five fingers mark the dead, but do not soothe. “Hands have no tears to flow.†And Death Shall Have No Dominion expresses the triumph of the human spirit over death. “Though lovers be lost love shall not.†Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night represents the fight against death. “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.†The musical expression of these poems places the voice in the low (dark) range. Tempi are slow, and minor keys are prevalent. Only occasionally are major tonalities presented. These passages combine with particularly uplifting phrases such as “Though they sink through the sea, they shall rise again†and “Wild men, who caught and sang the sun in flight…†Near the end of the last song, the poet addresses his deceased father: “And you, my father, there on the sad height...†The voice stays on a constant pitch while the harmony lifts beneath (to the heights), in the Lydian (raised) mode. [One might hear the voice as “perched atop†the rising chords.] This is one of the most personal lines of Dylan Thomas' poetry. As the poet speaks to his father, the climax of the song comes with the rising phrases of “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.†The final chords are dissonant, marked “with determination and triumph.†Duration: 10:10.
