On April 19, 2019, I started writing my first composition, His Memory, on my first album, Show Your Pride. The Show Your Pride album was influenced by my best friend, Nigel Shelby, who tragically passed away by suicide after experiencing bullying for being outed as gay. It has been a few years since his death turned a national spotlight on the issue of LGBTQIA+ mental health and bullying. He was 15 years old at the time of his passing. I feel like I've been stabbed in the heart when I found he was gone. It was the first time I had lost anybody that I was close to. I was in a lot of pain at the time. Losing my best friend is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking experiences I have had in my life. This album is telling a coming-out story about a bisexual musician going on a self-discovery journey to find his true authentic self. I first met Nigel in mid-2018 when I was nervous, struggling with depression, and coming out as bisexual, so I gathered enough strength and confidence to come out to him. He's very kind and supportive of me. He was brave enough to come out to me as well. He has been a really good friend and my spirit guide as long as I've known him. He was understanding, thoughtful, and had a maturity about him that I admired. I feel happy and honored to have known him and had the best friends with him. I truly believe he is watching over me every day. In this inspirational, heartbreaking piece, His Memory, I will share a coming-out story about two boys who came out to each other, spending their friendship together until one of them passes away. This piece is based on a true story of how I coped with grief, dealing with depression about my best friend's passing, and how I found happiness within myself after his memorial service. It drew inspiration from many compositions and soundtracks, including Where The Sky Has No Stars by Katahj Copley, Lose You Now by Lindsey Stirling (feat. Mako), You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hansen by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, April Sky by Lin Chin Cheng, and Avatar The Last Airbender by Jeremy Zuckerman. These compositions I mentioned express hope and spark memories of lost loved ones. This piece is in 3 Acts: Friendship, I Lost You. and His Memory Lives On. Each one was inspired by actual events. Act I: Friendship Act II: I Lost You Act III: His Memory Lives On While you are listening to this piece, I want you to think about someone you love who is no longer with you. If you're one of those people who lost someone special to you, I am so sorry for your loss. Just know that you are not alone. Don't try to run and hide from your grief. Whatever your grief experience, it's important to be patient with yourself and allow the process to naturally unfold. You will grieve for as long as you need to, but you are a strong person and will find your way through this. Life is so precious. Cherish every moment with your loved ones. Coming out is one of the most difficult things a person can do, but if you are having difficulty or are unsure about it, just know that there are people out there who do love you for who you are. Learn to embrace your authentic self. Don't let your sexual orientation define who you are. The right people will accept you and those are the only people who matter. Be yourself, be happy, and do what you feel. Don't care so much about what others think and enjoy your life! Keep following your heart and don't be afraid to stand out!

A CV-22 Osprey aircraft from Yokota Air Base in Tokyo crashed, killing all eight crew members. Being stationed at Yokota as an Air Force Bandsman during that trying time, my emotions turned to music as a gift of solidarity from the PACAF Band to the grieving family members. The completed music was delivered to my Commander a week after the shocking event.On 15 February 2024, the Base conducted a somber memorial service for the eight heroes who gave their last full measure of devotion in the line of duty. This piece was performed in lieu of “Taps” toward the end of the ceremony, as “Taps” was to be sounded at the Base Retreat Ceremony later that day. The gift of music was profound. Tears from the family members seated in the front rows flowed freely at the end of the performance, punctuated by increased sobs. High-quality professional prints of the score and parts were paid for by the United States Air Force and gifted to families of the deceased and distinguished visitors at the memorial service.One poignant detail was that at the performance during the memorial service, the brass quintet was augmented by a Japanese trumpet player from the nearby Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Band. This symbolic gesture of solidarity greatly impacted the profundity of the event.Last Full Measure, Op. 143, for brass quintet was completed 6 Dec 2023. This composition is not to be confused with Op. 33: Last Full Measure of Devotion, for 24 trumpets. However, in an allusion to that monumental early work, this present brass quintet’s “last measures” echo the final strain of “Taps” in memory of the eight crew members who perished. Duration: 3:00. When Whittaker hosted a radio programme at that time, one of his ideas was to invite listeners to send their poems or lyrics to me and I would make songs out of them. We got a million replies, and I did one each week for 26 weeks. Webster, a silversmith from Birmingham, sent Whittaker his poem entitled The Last Farewell, and this became one of the selections to appear on the radio programme. It was recorded, and featured on Whittaker's 1971 album New World in the Morning (A Special Kind of Man in the US and Canada). It is one of the fifty all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) physical copies worldwide, peaking at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. It was kept from number 1 by Rod Stewart's Sailing, resulting in an oddity that the top 2 songs in the UK singles chart at the time had a nautical theme. The Last Farewell also went to number 1 in 11 other countries, selling an estimated 11 million copies worldwide, making it Whittaker's best-known song. I always enjoy writing something simple but pretty and this piece is exactly that. As with many of my other piano compositions, I enjoy writing them in the style of “soft piano” pieces which you can listen to while you study, work, relax, or anything else. I initially came up with the original motif at the start of the piece which I really liked and expanded it into a full piece. When coming up to the B section I made it too dramatic and it would probably be too distracting for the listener if they were working or studying so I decided to start over with the B section and write something that expanded upon the original motif in a subtle and sweet way.I am quite pleased with the finished composition, it turned out in a way that I was aiming for from the beginning. As for the title, I sat down after I had finished writing the piece and listened to it a few times and brainstormed some names. I eventually settled on the name that it is now: ‘Some Things Don’t Always Last’ which has a bitter-sweet quality to it. I think it fits quite well with the piece as it’s like a lullaby that comes and goes. A distant memory that is recalled because of an old toy you found or because you drove past your childhood home that you grew up in.

The premiere was performed by Clemens Ganz, then organist at the Cathedral of Cologne, in memory of the esteemed teacher and college colleague. The work marks the end of a tirelessly prolific life with more than one hundred organ works of various characters, genres and possibilities of use in liturgy and concerts. The title 'Concerto da chiesa' reveals that this is a work for concerts, not for being used in services. The three-movement composition is an unmistakable 'Schroeder' work: emphasis of linearity according to high baroque standards, conciseness and sometimes impulsive gestures of the themes and rhythms, layers of parallel chords within a freely tonal modern harmony, not forgetting the plasticity of form and the motor functions which are surprisingly energetic for an eighty-year-old.

The piece is based on the six sounding letters of her last name (GERSCH, where the O is omitted, the R represents RE - the D note in Spanish, Italian, or Turkish - and the S represents the E flat, 'Es' in German), as well as on the remaining six notes of the total chromatic scale (C#, F, F#, Ab, A, B). Such coincidences confirm to me that I am on the right path, at least musically.The reference to Turkey is not coincidental, as Ursula taught in Istanbul for many years.The initial texture of the piece - a kind of toccata with many repeated notes - is a purely musical homage to Ursula: she used this texture in some passages of her compositions. Besides that, this piece contains no direct quotation from Ursula's music.The work Hommage an Ursula is based on a series of 12 notes. The original version (Prime) and the inverted version (Inversed) alternate. From these 24 versions of the series, 24 sections result. I add a final section based on the original series ('Das Ende im Anfange'*); thus, there are 25 sections.To order the 5 motivic elements, I generate a Latin square. The 5 elements do not rotate, but, in each of the 5 main sections, the initial motive is always the same (A), and the order of the other four (BCDE) changes, permutating according to the following Latin square:A BCDEA CEBDA DBECA EDCBA BCDEThis work can then be considered as a derivation of the 'theme and variations' structure, with the peculiarity that there are five sub-themes that are rearranged in each of the variations.This piece lasts about 11 minutes. The premiere, performed by the composer (that is, by myself), took place on November 26, 2023, at the Konzertsaal of the Hochschule für Künste in Bremen, during the concert 'Gedenkkonzert Ursula Görsch und Harald Kruse', as part of the 73rd Hausmusikwoche, organized by the DTKV (German Association of Sound Artists) in cooperation with the ABK (Circle of Composers in Bremen).This is not an easy piece to listen to. It is absolutely consistent but perhaps monotonous. During the premiere, the yawns of someone in the audience prompted me to briefly interrupt the performance to inform them that the end was near. After the concert, one of the organizers suggested to me that the piece was too 'anstrengend' (demanding, exhausting).
