Published by Andrew Schneider (A0.930749). This is an a cappella anthem for church or concert performance which combines texts from Psalms 115 and 92 (NIV translation). It is in two sections, the first slow and homophonic for SATB choir (comparatively easier, in the idiom of God So Loved the World), the second fast for divisi SATB choir. The musical idiom is alla Mendelssohn, though I have opted for a formal treatment alla Russian Orthodox choral concerti, in which the vocal parts are treated somewhat like instruments. Either section can be done on its own as a separate and fulfilling piece, with the knowledge that the two sections are motivically linked.

The court of Sigismund III Vasa of Poland attracted quite a few Italian Renaissance masters interested in writing in an opulent style reminiscent of the polychoral stylings of Gabrieli. This motet is an especially peppy and epic display of rhythmic and timbral virtuosity paying collectively tribute to martyrs who disdained the rule of earthly princes and so earned a heavenly crown. This is a 6-voice motet arranged for seven instruments so as to allow for invertible counterpoint. A glossary of the Polish expressive markings is available upon request; note that I have endeavoured to give some of the instruments a bit of a spicy rhythmic profile and render this score a bit more balletic, in the manner Stravinsky arranged Gesualdo madrigals.

Published by Andrew Schneider (A0.930752). This is a choral anthem setting of Psalm 117 designed for either church or concert use. In its effortless use of various elements of Baroque practice, I have written a piece which will hopefully be useful for high schools and community colleges with smaller choirs to get students to sing works which can prep them for repertoire. Churches will also find this a work appropriate for any festive occasion and also useful in telling people that composers actually exist today who like the bygone way of doing things. And also with a rather exciting piano part! I certainly enjoy raising the bar.To that end, the A section can be sung on its own as a separate piece, as it is deliberately easier than the B section, which has more chromatic and polyphonic passages. This is the perfect piece to convey to high school students the impression that Baroque music can be exciting, spontaneous, and not old-fashioned, and in a matter which will be immediately perceived to be authentic.The ad libitum trumpet parts are available directly from the composer. Though they are not strictly necessary for a successful performance, they do give a special spice and festive aura that can only be beneficial.
