Scored for Clarinet in E flat, 3 B flat Clarinets, Alto and Bass Clarinet, Weekend in Paris is a bright jazz waltz intended to convey the excitement and anticipation of a trip to Paris. The music is to bring to mind pleasure in sightseeing, wandering around cafe's, seeing children at play, people dancing and laughing and families gathering in a happy relaxed atmosphere in the glorious sunshine. The piece is in Concert D flat major establishing the bright swingy rhythm, this then flows into the second section which is more lyrical and legato. A short bridge section follows keeping the motif's heard in the first section but exploring the lower registers and remains largely legato. The first two sections are then heard again before a modulation takes place to give the piece a final lift before the end. The piece concludes quietly with a snippet of the opening motif. I have set it to intermediate level but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. The music would be a great addition to any repertoire as a happy piece, programmatic with a world/travelling theme in mind. Full score 16 pages-parts 4 pages. 4 mins 30 in length. Grant Horsley #720588. Published by Grant Horsley (A0.1119173). Espionage, scored for Clarinet in E flat, 3 B flat Clarinets, Alto and Bass Clarinet. It is a descriptive exciting piece, and the intention was to make it mysterious in style with a film-like storyline flowing through it. It has a calm intro going into a heavily syncopated driving 4 as the main theme punctuated by a heavy accented ostinato figure to add tension. The middle section is calmer and more relaxed where elements of the 1st theme appear in fragmented form. The intro returns once again before returning to the main theme which has slight modifications-extra accents etc, and the piece ends with the recurring stabs heard earlier before flourishing out. The ranges of the Clarinets are between one and a half octaves and 2 octaves depending on the part. Set at intermediate level but the full score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. Grant Horsley #689812. Published by Grant Horsley (A0.1085640). Aria is scored for Clarinet in E flat, 3 B flat Clarinets, Alto and Bass Clarinet. It is a very restful melodic piece based on a single motif heard in bar 1. Written in concert B flat major the piece is very hymn -like in design- with long notes and chords but has some unusual harmonies. The searing theme is stated then repeated with variation in texture. The theme is then developed using the rhythmic motif in the beginning climaxing in C major briefly before calmly returning to B flat major to repeat again. On this repeat more variation takes place before a restful conclusion. The top note is top B flat (C5) and I've tried to keep all parts interesting. The full score is 11 pages and parts are 3 pages each- it is roughly 5 mins 30 in length. I have set it to intermediate level but an early intermediate should be ok with some of the parts. Waltz of the Harlequins is an original piece- The Harlequin is the best-known of the comic servant characters from the Italian commedia dell'arte- popularised in Paris in the 16thc. The Harlequin is characterized by his checkered costume. Their role is that of a light-hearted, nimble, and astute servant, Harlequin inherits his physical agility and his trickster qualities, as well as his name, from a mischievous devil character in medieval passion plays. This concert piece written in waltz time (almost 1 in a bar)is playful and light, and represents the characters escapades. It is in ternary for in Concert C minor with the middle section in A flat major major before returning to the opening them and coda.
