This volume gradually introduces the most important thumb techniques:

At first, the 4 finger patterns in thumb position are introduced systematically. The thumb first remains placed over the octave harmonics. Later, other thumb positions are added. At the end of the volume, the change from one thumb position to the other and the octave parallels are practised.

In order that the student does not miss out on the fun, each topic comes with 'tailor-made' pieces and arrangements of the author from classical, folk, rock, and jazz music. Many pieces also come with piano parts and mp3s for download. The programme is completed by many examples from the classical cello literature.

The author recommends using the comprehensive material in various ways. The order can be changed without any problems. Chapters or difficult passages can be skipped and practised later. This volume should be used over a longer period, yet can be occasionally laid aside for a while.

The Italian flute virtuoso Giuseppe Gariboldi (1833-1905) wrote numerous studies for the flute which are among today's standard teaching literature. Starting with easy melodic tonal studies, the 'First Exercises' gradually expand their range of tones, thus increasing the technical demands. Melodic and harmonic progression, dynamics, articulation and dexterity are developed in short, .exercises arranged in varying ways, starting from the basics.
The song-like, easily comprehensible melody in connection with elementary motivic work (repetitions of motifs, sequences and variations) trains the inner tonal image which is imperative for the beginner in particular. When a sense of melodic progression and phrasing is developed on this basis, the increasing technical elements added later are incorporated both unobtrusively and organically. This new volume in the well-known Schott series 'Essential Exercises' is complemented by teaching tips and an index of the technical and musical topics.

The Singphoniker have arranged Georg Kreisler's best known songs for all-male ensemble and recorded them on CD. Schott now publishes the corresponding music edition for men's choir TTBB with piano accompaniment. The topics range from the poisoning of pigeons to the love of a wonderful woman to her long awaited moving out. These pleasant arrangements for men's choir TTBB and piano with Kreisler's humorous texts most certainly create an exuberant atmosphere in the concert.

These exercises and pieces would like to help wind ensembles focus their concentration on the perception and implementation of refined playing techniques. The goal is by practicing music "playfully" to become familiar with and get the hang of contemporary music.
"Basic Steps" will talk about the following topics: Warm-up, intonation, chord colours, articulation and rhythm and will be placing particular emphasis on the genre of "Swing". This will be accompanied by compact orchestra etudes as well as short pieces.
