Published by John Fries (A0.1230085). Please contact me by email at jfries@ptd.net to make a special request or to find out all that I have to offer and to express your comments or concerns. Thanks, John. I Can See Clearly Now is a song written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Johnny Nash. It was the lead single from his album, I Can See Clearly Now (1972), and achieved success in the United States and the United Kingdom when it was released in 1972, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and Cash Box charts. It also reached number one in Canada and South Africa.  After Nash wrote and composed the original version, he recorded it in London with members of the Fabulous Five Inc., and produced it himself. The song's arrangements and style are both heavily laced with reggae influences, as Nash had earlier collaborated with Bob Marley and his approach drew strongly from Marley's reggae style.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1243618 By Brad Rau. By Erik Satie. Arranged by Brad Rau. 20th Century. Individual part. 3 pages. Brad Rau #838582. Published by Brad Rau (A0.1243618). D'une Manière Très Particulière was originally written for solo piano and has been arranged for solo guitar by Brad Rau. Fingering suggestions have been added to make it easier to play. The original piece was notated without measures; however, measures have been added to make learning easier. The pieces also do not have a key signature. However, it seems to begin in C minor. It has been transposed to A minor to make it easier to play. This is from a set of pieces Erik Satie wrote in 1897 called Pieces Froides or Cold Pieces. The first set of pieces is called Airs à faire fuir or Tunes to Make You Run Away. This movement is called D'une manière très particulière or In a Very Unusual Manner. In these sets of pieces, Satie writes in the enigmatic he used to compose the Gymnopedies and Gnossienne composed earlier. This little-known piece is rarely played on guitar but works really well.

Published by Claudio Porstmann (A0.835246). Please Forgive me is a beautiful ballad by Bryan Adams from the year 1993. This piano arrangement captures the essence of the song while at the same time leaving a little space for dynamical interpretation. This is the intermediate level version, which is easier to play than the advanced one I wrote earlier. This is a great song for all fans of Bryan Adams' slower songs. Guitar Ensemble - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1453659 By Joseph Davila. By Joseph Davila. Christmas,Classical,Contemporary,Holiday,Multicultural,World. Score and Parts. 17 pages. JaGlo Music #1032873. Published by JaGlo Music (A0.1453659). This is a guitar quartet Christmas piece that I wrote earlier this year. It is for advanced players and is perfect for Holiday Concerts, Christmas parties or recitals. The theme is based on the legend of the Pukwudgie and is the soundtrack to the story below. © Copyright 2024 JaGlo Music. In the quaint village of Hollybrook, Christmas was a time of joy and togetherness. But this year, a malicious pukwudgie named Bramble planned to spread fear and chaos. On Christmas Eve, as villagers gathered around the grand tree for the annual lighting ceremony, Bramble struck. He made the lights flicker and go out and twisted the ornaments into grotesque shapes. He snuck into homes, swapping sugar for ashes and hiding stockings in unreachable places, casting a dark spell over the village. By morning, Hollybrook was in disarray. Children found their stockings missing, cookies ruined, and the tree ominous in the square. Fear gripped the town. Amidst the chaos, a brave girl named Lucy refused to let fear win. She gathered her friends and ventured into the forest, following eerie footprints. They found Bramble muttering dark incantations under a gnarled tree. Caught in a trap made from holly and mistletoe, Bramble hissed his intentions to spread fear. Lucy, with steely resolve, offered him a chance at redemption. Reluctantly, Bramble agreed. They returned to the village, and with Bramble’s help, dispelled the dark enchantments. The ornaments returned to their beautiful forms, sugar replaced the ashes, and the stockings were found. That night, the tree lit up, and Bramble felt warmth in his heart for the first time. The villagers, initially wary, accepted him as he helped create beautiful ice sculptures, adding magic to the festivities. From that year on, Bramble became part of Hollybrook. His dark nature slowly transformed under the light of friendship and acceptance. Every Christmas, his magic brought extra sparkle to the celebrations, reminding everyone that even the darkest hearts could find redemption through kindness and love.

Piano Solo - SKU: A0.1022082 Composed by Bill Taylor. Contemporary,Film/TV,Jazz. Score. 8 pages. William R Taylor #6475265. Published by William R Taylor (A0.1022082). October 8-9 (©2018) – solo piano. I was asked to write a short piece for a September 2018 fire survivors performance of monologues about the October 9, 2017 Redwood Complex fire. The piece depicts events from the afternoon and evening before until the early morning of the fire. These words fit with the sections: Red Flag Warning, Jaye came home from residency! hot wind, Happy reunion, hot wind, romantic evening, hot wind, warm embrace, sleep, smoke or just a hot night?, sleep, Yanahay texts Potter Valley on Fire, red on our ridge, Fire!, how again?, who to call? Everyone we know between here and Potter, landing ember fires, propane tank booms. In that year we experienced a fire three months earlier which burned most of our land including an orchard; the house was spared. In this fire it was an achievable goal to water down the small unburned dry grass and protect home and cabin; many others in our community who had not had the first fire had homes and even lives lost as it was a real firestorm with high winds. In 2019 I wrote an orchestral version with piano that will be published later. The ending on the audio file is different and was not written; I wrote out a piano part for the symphonic version so improvisation is encouraged to depict a fire out of control and a community's experience of that. The orchestral version was used in a film From the Ashes

Guitar,Piano,Vocal,Voice - SKU: A0.935515 Composed by Shaun Parry. Sacred. Score. 1 pages. MusicforMillions #5754989. Published by MusicforMillions (A0.935515). THIS IS AN ORIGINAL (simple) SONG I WROTE FOR MY MOM AND SISTER To be clear, it is a prayer written in musical form. I guess that makes it a psalm. A few nights ago I was feeling the pain of so many people around the globe who are suffering due to the pandemic. I was inspired to sit down and write an simple song of comfort for them-for us. The very same evening I started writing the song, unbeknownst to me, my sister was being taken to the hospital where she collapsed of heart failure and was life-flighted to the nearest cardiovascular facility. They put her on life support (ECMO and ventilator) to let her heart and lungs rest. Two days later, due to complications with circulation in her leg she had to be rushed into emergency surgery to pull the catheter from the artery leading to her heart. This required taking her off of life support four days earlier than they had planned. We were informed she may not make it. Thanks to thousands of people praying for her, and her own indomitable spirit, she pulled through-but not without more complications.A fever kicked in and lack of circulation in her other leg caused even more concern. Her heart and body were suffering greatly. As we prayed (and thousands of you from around the world prayed with us) I kept massaging and nuancing the exact melody line I wanted, at the same time interweaving various lyrics to intuit what felt right. I wanted this to be a song anyone could sing for their beloved family member or friend who was struggling. Every note, every syllable had to land just right-as if it was meant to be.Through all this my mother was going through her own bit of personal anguish. We were basically waiting for my sister to die. Due to COVID regulations nobody, not even family, could visit her in ICU. My mother bought a plane ticket... just in case. We hoped beyond hope that, If she died, she would not die alone. I wanted to finish this song by Mother's Day to share with my mother and my dear struggling sister who is also a mother of 5. I finished it and sang it through tears on Mother's Day. I have many friends show speak Spanish who are going through very difficult times due to COVID-19 and the subsequent quarantine. The second time through is a carefully crafted Spanish translation. I hope to hear people singing this far and wide with, to and for each other.

Instrumental Solo,Pipe Organ - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1315319 By John Powell. By John Powell. Arranged by Anna Lapwood. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary,Film/TV. Individual part. 10 pages. Anna Lapwood #904065. Published by Anna Lapwood (A0.1315319). Over the past couple of years I have written a number of film music transcriptions on and for the organ of the Royal Albert Hall in London. While the transcriptions are written with this organ in mind, often calling for specific colours such as the bass drum, carillons or tubular bells, they are adaptable on a number of different instruments and I’ve loved tweaking them in order to play them on organs all across the world. I hope you enjoy playing them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them! One of the soundtracks that I get asked to perform most regularly is Test Drive by John Powell. This is one of the earlier transcriptions I wrote, and I often use it as a piece to illustrate the difference between different organs. It’s quite useful to have one piece to use as a comparison point, so I post little videos of this wherever I’m playing to demonstrate how radically different the same piece of music can sound depending on the kind of instrument. For me, this piece feels like an instant serotonin boost. There is a great crescendo where you get to take the organ from relatively quiet to earth-shatteringly loud over the course of about 30 seconds, and I always say that playing that part feels a bit like flying a dragon! - Anna Lapwood

Lesotho Variations for Solo Piano, Opus 1, was my first mature work as a composer. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Lesotho from 1995 to 1997 when I was in my early 20s. I wrote this work several years after returning to the United States. Each variation is based on a scene from Lesotho, some being an everyday activity, such as plowing fields or looking out over the mountains. The earlier variations are more light-hearted than the later variations, which deal with more serious issues including drought and illness. While all of the variations are based on the Lesotho National Anthem, an additional song, Mohololi, also appears in the later variations. I heard the song just once, at the funeral of a fellow Peace Corps Volunteer, Jeremy Rolfs, who died in a car accident in South Africa at the young age of 27. Jeremy and I had discussed composing an opera based on music and stories from Lesotho. While that project never came to fruition, I offer this work in his memory.

I wrote Elegy II almost immediately after the Isla Vista shootings in 2014. Many of my students and friends at UCSB were deeply affected, and some came quite close to being in the line of fire. The piece reuses some melodic material from my first elegy, which I had written for my grandmother’s funeral a few years earlier. Both end on a picardy third. For the first elegy, I considered that a way of embracing a future influenced by the love for and memories of her. For this one, I’m not so sure. At best, it feels like an honest wish for healing. In the face of the daily murder of innocent people, it feels like a hollow gesture. In any case, if the piece brings someone some comfort, I am glad for that.Elegy II was premiered by the violist Jordan Warmath at a concert at UCSB in memory of the victims. A violin version followed shortly thereafter, and then a video and recording performed by my friend Jonathan Morgan.

Arranged by Rob Bushnell. Classical,Easter,Film/TV,Opera,Romantic Period. Score and individual part. 9 pages. RBMusic #909019. Published by RBMusic (A0.1320503). In 1889, a struggling composer called Pietro Mascagni heard about a sponsored competition for one-act operas, specifically for young Italian composers who had not yet had an opera performed, only two months before the deadline. With little time, he selected the subject for his opera and asked his childhood friend, Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti (who was helped by Guido Menasci), to write a libretto for him. Mascagni selected a story that he had seen as a play in Milan in early 1884 by realist writer Giovanni Verga, “Rustic Chivalryâ€, or Cavalleria rusticana. A passionate love tragedy featuring seduction, adultery, revenge and murder, it is surprising set on Easter morning.Mascagni received only a few verses at a time from his librettists, but he was not worried because he had the opera clear in his mind: “I identified with the drama to such an extent that I felt it within myself in terms of music.†After two months’ of work, the music for Cavalleria rusticana was finished but he feared the opera would fail and put the music in a draw. Fortunately, his wife sent it off, he unanimously won the competition and was soon the talk of Europe. (At the premiere in May 1890 in Rome, Mascagni received no fewer than 60 curtain calls.) Unfortunately, it was a one-hit wonder with Mascagni unable to repeat its success, saying towards the end of his life that “it is a pity I wrote Cavalleria first for I was crowned before I became king.†He died, penniless, in 1945.Today, few people have heard of Mascagni’s name, and, if they have, it is rarely in relation to anything but one piece from Cavalleria rusticana, the Intermezzo. A short piece of purely orchestral music that is uses to denote the passage of time, the orchestration is very simple but it is such an indulgently beautiful melody (based on a hymn heard earlier in the short opera) that perfectly captures the peace of country living in Sicily against the intense feelings of the main characters and the looming tragedy to come. The piece is so popular that (along with the “Easter Hymn†from the same opera), it is the only reason Mascagni features in the Classic FM’s Hall of Fame. The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.This arrangement (for solo trombone or euphonium and piano accompaniment) includes an alternative part for trombone/euphonium in treble clef. A recording of the original song can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kgr-I1y1_2M.Other searchable terms: Italy, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty, Nicholas Colasanto, Theresa Saldana, Frank Vincent, Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Andy GarcÃa, Eli Wallach, Joe Mantegna, Bridget Fonda, George Hamilton, Sofia Coppola.

Clarinet Quartet,Woodwind Ensemble Bass Clarinet,E-Flat Clarinet - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1325229 Composed by Pietro Mascagni. Arranged by Rob Bushnell. Classical,Easter,Film/TV,Opera,Romantic Period. 15 pages. RBMusic #913462. Published by RBMusic (A0.1325229). The piece was used in the 1980 film Raging Bull and the 1990 film The Godfather Part III.This arrangement includes alternative parts for clarinet in E-flat and alto clarinet in E-flat. A recording of the original song can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kgr-I1y1_2M.Other searchable terms: Italy, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty, Nicholas Colasanto, Theresa Saldana, Frank Vincent, Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Andy GarcÃa, Eli Wallach, Joe Mantegna, Bridget Fonda, George Hamilton, Sofia Coppola.

Woodwind Ensemble Bass Clarinet - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1126423 By John Philip Sousa. By John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Sean Sullivan. 19th Century,March,Romantic Period. 11 pages. Sean Sullivan #727114. Published by Sean Sullivan (A0.1126423). This well-known march is presented in a carefully written edition for clarinet quartet. This arrangement is created from the original Sousa traveling band parts. Sousa once told a reporter that the march had been derived from an earlier composition, probably “The Phoenix March†(1875): “I wrote ‘Manhattan Beach’ while playing a summer engagement at that once-popular resort, using as the basis an old march I had composed when I was with Milton Nobles.â€.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1431203 Composed by Sacred Harp (1844). Arranged by Robert Chamberlin. Classical,Sacred. Score. 5 pages. Robert Chamberlin #1011667. Published by Robert Chamberlin (A0.1431203). “Interpretation of “Beach Spring” is an arrangement of this familiar American hymn tune, which originally appeared in the Sacred Harp. This arrangement is a modification of an earlier arrangement of the same tune that I wrote for organ. That arrangement featured the melody in the pedals using a 4’ solo stop. In writing this adaptation, I wanted to make the arrangement accessible for either piano solo or organ (manuals only). For that reason, the score shows no piano pedal instructions and it does not include organ stop suggestions. If played as a piano solo, pedaling in general with harmonic changes would work well. If played on the organ, quiet flute and string stops are appropriate for the accompaniment. A suggestion for the solo in the left hand might be an 8’ clarinet stop.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1333731 Composed by David W. Barber. A Cappella,Christian,Early Music,Jazz,Medieval. 25 pages. David W. Barber #920028. Published by David W. Barber (A0.1333731). I wrote this piece in 2018 to mark the 50th anniversaryof the Toronto Chamber Choir, a fine early music choir I have sung with since 1998.Using the  opening of the well-known Gregorian chant Gaudeamus omnes (and changingthe text to let us rejoice in music, Gaudeamus is a five- minute musical history tourthrough the various time periods the TCC sings. It begins with plainchant, then two-voiceorganum of the 11th-century Notre Dame school of Leonin and Perotin, followed bythree-voice hocket of a slightly later period. Then a nod to the 15th-century Dufay motetNuper rosarum flores (which the TCC has performed.) Next comes some 16th-centuryTudor music -- Byrd, say -- including some false relations and a typical English cadence. Then comes an allusion to Purcell, specifically the pleasing dissonance of the “voice of theTurtle†from My Beloved Spake. Then comes a little Bach-like fugue (or fughetta) based onthe Gaudeamus motif. Since the TCC rarely performs Classic/Romantic repertoire, wejump immediately to a jazzy ending in compound meter -- imagine Byrd meets Brubeck, based on one of my own earlier pieces for solo piano, but with elements of the Gaudeamusmelody. And all that in five minutes. Phew!

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576517). A melody of yearning and resignation - written originally for a collaboration project Letter to Howard Nicholls, which never took off. This particular melody, which I wrote for the project, has always remained in my mind so I made it initially into an instrumental duet and now into a fuller version for flute (playing the melody part) accompanied by violin, viola, cello and 2 guitars. The earlier versions for clarinet and guitar and for flute and guitar are also available on this site. The sound sample is an electronic preview. The pdf file contains score and parts. This piece could also work as a pop ballad, in which case a percussion part can be improvised if required.

Published by The Composer's Own Press (A0.944075). Composer's notes: I have always been fascinated by music that lives on the boundary between popular and highbrow, and Argentinian Tango falls right into this category. I wrote Tango for the Road in the summer of 2015, following an earlier tango in my Odessa Trio, titled Tango Dorfman. The genre has a number of well-defined musical characteristics, often opposing one another: it is rhythmically strict and precise, yet warm and sentimental; it carries melodious tunes accompanied by soft chromaticism and elegance, yet it conceals tremendous spark and inner-power; being a partner dance, it sometimes displays a Leader/Follower relationship and other times an equal vigor and energy between the partners.
