The first out of four movement of the work Liz And The Blue Bird arranged for woodwind ensemble.Liz And The Blue Bird is a four-movement work based on a fictional German fairytale from a movie, both of the same name. Liz is the name of a lonely girl who sells bread at a bakery and socializes with the forest animals. After a big thunderstorm, she finds an unnamed blue-haired girl lying outside. She quickly takes her into her home and, the two become close friends. After a while, Liz started noticing the girl sneaking out at night and coming back before dawn. Liz noticed how the girl would look at the birds freely flying in the sky when they fed the animals. Liz becomes conflicted with her emotions but eventually decides to release her from the cage that is her home. Liz confronts the girl and tells her that she needs to be free and spread her wings. Although distraught by Liz's decision, the girl comes to respect it. He uses two illustrations from nature, birds and flowers, as examples of living in quiet contentment. In each case, Jesus admonishes us to take a moment to either look at or consider. Both actions require us to engage in contemplation. The piece is cast loosely in the Loure dance form, with long pauses interrupting each phrase portion. The piece is an illustration of taking time to consider something in a deep and meaningful way. A technically simple tune embodies the quiet life of contented trust in God and contemplation. Consider The Lillies mimics the act of hearing an idea, then pausing to consider it. Both performer and audience are given time to contemplate the musical phrase portions during the moment of silence that follows each musical idea.Performance NotesWhen performing Consider The Lillies, approach each phrase portion as a melody in and of itself. The main tempo marking at the beginning, Adagio Rubato, allows the performer to  naturally act out the process of hearing an idea, then pausing for contemplation. Executing a strict tempo is not necessary. However, each phrase should be performed without drastic tempo changes.

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767564). This is a highly programmatic piece for flute trio, loosely based around one of the Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales Hansel and Gretel. The first movement depicts the children wandering off into the dark forest, initially surrounded by twittering birds and sunlight, but as the movement progresses, the music becomes darker. As the light fades, the children strew breadcrumbs to guide their way out of the forest when they decide to return to the village. At letter C, the mysterious chords suggest something disturbing, perhaps trees with scare faces or giant spiderwebs. At D, the change to 3/4 time suggests the children are anxious and scurrying through the trees, feeling scared, with the use of flutter tonguing suggesting their shivers of fear. Finally, out of breath, they reach the dark clearing with the Gingerbread house. The second movement describes the witch’s Gingerbread house. The top line shows the house’s roof, the middle line shows the windows and the third line marks out the porch and the front door. The children wonder at the strange building and chatter to each other as they explore it, perhaps nibbling here and there. The motif that describes the shape of the house appears from time to time throughout this section as they explore it from different angles. At letter D, after the G.P., the children begin to sense that they are not alone in the house. The low trill on the third flute is meant to be a breathy whisper (it doesn’t matter if the notes fail in performance for this reason) as the witch mutters under her breath. She attempts to pounce on the children and force them into her oven, but they are too fast for her. They trick her into the oven and slam the door shut (Bar before F.) They run from the clearing, not caring if they are going in the right direction. They glance back - once catching sight of the Gingerbread house which has begun to collapse in on itself - before they finally stop for breath as night begins to fall and they find a safe place to sleep (Lento before G.) The third movement sees our young heroes looking for the trail of breadcrumbs to take them back to the village. They are plodding through the deep forest, accompanied once more by the birds. Occasionally they find a crumb or two, but the birds have eaten most of them. They eventually manage to backtrack to the village (the music reflects this as it’s a retrograde of some of the music from movement 1) and they finally reach the village where they are greeted with a party for having killed the witch and returned safely home. This music is in a ‘pastoral style (6/8) and fades away as …they all lived happily ever after.

Emil Kronke (1865-1938), a composer of the German late Romantic era, has unjustly fallen into oblivion until today. As a pianist and piano teacher, he primarily composed works for his principal instrument. In addition, he wrote several works for flute which look back on a rich tradition in Dresden, his adopted home town and sphere of activity for many years. Apart from virtuoso salon music, he also composed easier pieces like Kolibris Op. 201 from 1931.
The six appealing miniatures with easy piano accompaniment are little didactic pieces which can be used even by young flutists of today to develop their technique and their style. Furthermore, they sound so beautiful as to certainly bring a good mood into the classroom, yet are also suitable for pupils' concerts and competitions. May the Kolibris continue to fly in the following generations and be played by young musicians with joy and imagination.
