Therefore the structure is rather 'mosaic-like', just as different ideas, and coloured tiles, can reoccur in different places/patterns in a mosaic work of art. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of harpsichordist, including students and advanced players.

I had written another work for horn choir (Firefall) to be premiered at an IHS conference recital. Due to a player shortage, it had to be moved to another recital program, which left a hole on the original recital program. So, I stepped into a practice room one afternoon for a few hours and created Mosaic Fanfare. It is a brief snapshot in a simple ABA form based on the three note motif. It is gratefully dedicated to the IHS and the wonderful horn choir that gave its premiere.

Loops, Mosaics, Images and Patterns for mallet percussion ensemble and electric piano relies heavilyon repeated patterns and textures sustainable by these instruments. Loops is constructed from motifs establishedby each instrument. Each motif loops around, overlapping each other to create a musical texture. Mosaics and Images were begun after a reunion trip to Washington, DC. Mosaics recalls the jazz music of Miles Davis I would listen to it on hot summer evenings with the windows open. The Sketches of Spain album. Later I visited Barcelona the home of bothGaudi and Picasso. Images must have been a premonition. It was only after I saw the exquisite stained glass windows of the Gaudi Sagrada Familia that I was able to complete this movement. Patterns is just that. Changing patterns in my own fashion. A colleague suggested substituting a fourth marimba for second xylophone in this movement to provide a more mellow texture.

The influences and moods of the heritage cultures are savored in the reminiscent character of this short piece. Hints of Debussy, Poulenc, Vaughn Williams and Ligeti are heard in the sonorous combination of three clarinets.

This piece is inspired by and dedicated to Eli Hansen (2/2/12-12/29/22). I was fortunate to meet Eli relatively early on his journey with neuroblastoma (a childhood cancer that starts in immature nerve cells) when he was the tender age of four. I first got to know him in my profession as an energy healer, sharing the healing “tickles†(as Eli called them), and then evolving into a sweet friendship. Eli’s journey was arduous, yet his strength of spirit, faith, and love were rock solid. This piece is a representation of the emotional peaks and valleys on Eli’s path. There is heaviness, glimpses of hope, and an ultimate glorious transition with the fluttering of angels’ wings. From the collection, Inner Mosaic, by Ann Ruane.

Since 1934, it is a museum – but more than that, the Hagia Sophia, a unique architectural work of monumental proportions in Christian Antiquity and the Middle Ages, is described as a mystical place. Monumental, yet mysterious, a 'miracle of space', a symbol, a sign. 'Sophia', the holy wisdom, accompanies us through the whole Bible history. The present music has to be regarded against this background: A reflection, contemplation with music and poetry. The Creation is powerful, but the truth about it is powerful as well. And the realization that the path to truth is reached through wisdom. As a consequence, this piece has to cross the powerful for half its duration, monumental. It is the cupola over all following (observing) verses (sections). From bar 371, the path leads back into the powerful, into the rejoicing (bar 406). It must not be forgotten to mention the suggestion of 'singing in a mosque' (bar 510) which is answered by a simple prayer (bar 511). This is reminiscent of the mosaic above the imperial door of the building portraying Jesus Christ sitting on a jewelled throne. He holds an open book in which one can read 'Peace be with you. I am the light of the world'. The line and sound of Hagia Sophia are based on a symmetrical eight-note row (mode B) with the notes B, C sharp, D, E/F, G, A flat (G sharp), B flat (A sharp). Although the major-minor relations are removed, harmonic connections (colours) emerge nevertheless.

In ancient Greece a rhapsod was a singer of epic poems and bits and pieces of tales strung together making a collage of entertainment. I have, in a like manner, allowed a simple line of melody, first introduced by the violin, to speak a musical tale. The violin, full of the exuberance and energy of youth, threads through the story’s themes and shadow themes, weaving a mosaic of sound through each episode. Shadow themes are melodies that are acoustically derived from one another like shadows. At first these themes perform supportive roles, but as the story moves forward, they gain in the dominance of pitch and dynamic. Sometimes running ahead of passage, making aggressive commentary, and sometimes aligning with the emotional expression of the phrase, the violin shifts between a mere exercise of notes to a noble exploration of broadening lyricism.
