An original setting, for SSABar choir and piano by Philip Le Bas, of Quiet Peace by Amy Carmichael (1867-1951), who worked as a Christian missionary among the poorest of the poor in India in the first half of the twentieth century. The poem is in the form of a prayer, and the music here has been been kept deliberately simple to perform, so that it canbe sung by a typical church choir. The piano here provides a constantly flowing ritornello throughout the verses, while the voices weave around it in a gentle wave of prayerful reflection. The poet feels an interior quiet peace while all around her there are storms and disquiet, because she knows that her Lord hears her voice. The setting is deliberately simple and undemanding, and it should be sung quietly, meditatively and without rushing. O Lord my heart is all a prayer, But it is silent unto thee; I am too tired to look for words, I rest upon thy sympathy To understand when I am dumb; And well I know thou hearest me. I admire the expressive power that the skilled poet can wring out of such bare economic means.  A scene, painted so poignantly, so vividly—an essence, a sigh, a quick, visceral sketch to capture the deceptively-simple drama of nature revealing itself.  They are epigrams of life. I hope these little morsels of music and words fill you with the essence of the winter season and that I’ve been able to impart some of the enthusiasm and admiration I feel for this wonderful aspect of Japanese culture.

It was a softly falling snow, and inspired me to write this piece.Play as smoothly as you can throughout the whole piece. Make sure you count very carefully in measure 21 and 22; the rhythms might surprise you. Also pay close attention to how the music is slurred. When you tongue, do so gently. The more you can help others imagine a quiet day with snow falling slowly and gently, the better. Nowhere in this piece should you play very loudly – even the mezzo forte sections should be on the softer side.Time: ca. 1:30Range: Bb2-C4Key: Bb MajorTime Signature: 4/4I would generally use this piece with a solid first year bassoon student transferring from another instrument, or a second year bassoonist. There are a couple places where flicking up to Bb is advised. Other technical considerations are moving between D and Eb, and F and G. There are also a few rhythmic challenges such as eighth to dotted quarter, and eighth note and two sixteenths.Once the student has purchased this piece, an adjudicator’s copy may be made. Teachers may purchase individual copies for each student’s use. Studio licensing is not available.

Gerade ist der Winter vorbei; man kann es natürlich auch im Sommer spielen! Gemeint habe ich hier eine gewisse stille, intime und träumerische Atmosphäre, die sich einstellt, wenn alles mit einer frischen Schneedecke überzogen ist. Um die Melodie erst einmal ganz für sich wahrnehmen zu können ist es gut, wenn die Melodie erst einstimmig vorgetragen wird, bevor die zweite Stimme hinzutritt. Einmal ist die Melodie eine Oberstimme, danach die Unterstimme. Die hinzutretende zweite Stimme ist jeweils anders. Beide Stimmen sind rhythmisch etwas eigenwillig und lassen sich nicht wirklich in dem notierten Takt zählen. Sie sollen einfach ruhig und schwerelos dahin fließen. Now winter has passed, but you can also play it in summer! I meant a certain quiet intimate and dreamy atmosphere which occurs when everything is covered with fresh snow. In order to perceive the melody for itself it is good when the melody first is performed one voice alone before the second voice joins. First the melody is the upper voice, then the lower voice. The second voice is different both times. Both voices are a bit rhythmically idiosyncratic and can´t really be counted according to the written bar. They should flow there just calm and weightless.
