This piece was one of those that wrote itself. After visiting the concentration camp, Buchenwald, in Germany, I felt I had to write something as a memorial piece for the victims of that camp. The english text of Agnus Dei came across as the perfect text to pair up with the prayer for the dead. Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace. and Grant unto them eternal rest, O God. And let perpetual light shine upon them. And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God the Father, rest in peace. Provided the textual roadway for the music to be built upon. .

Verdi was born near Busseto to a provincial family of moderate means, and developed a musical education with the help of a local patron. Verdi completed his Requiem Mass in April 1874 and conducted the first performance on May 22, 1874, at the church of San Marco in Milan. Viva la Verdi is a medley of Greatest Hits from the Requiem. The instrumentation consists of double brass quintet plus timpani and bass drum. ( Flugelhorn is preferred for the first trumpet’s solo.) It would be an ambitious undertaking for an excellent college or professional group but the rewards are many. This is a beautiful piece of music and the power of the brass ensemble is needed to convey both the intensity and peace of the Requiem Mass. Duration: 9:25

The inspiration for my Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) was Fauré's Requiem in which he ignored the fire and brimstone text of the Dies irae and Tuba mirum in the Sequence of the Requiem Mass. And consequently he created a work that is peaceful, tranquil and uplifting. I'd like to think of death in that way.So, I proceeded by taking the exact text that Fauré used in his work, and instead of a large chorus and full orchestra I decided to do a chamber version. It is scored for SATB (single voices), flute, clarinet, string quartet, double bass and harp.The movements, as in the Fauré, are:1. Introit and Requiem2. Offertory3. Santus 4. Pie Jesu5. Agnus Dei6. Libera me7. Harmonic tension builds as the plea Requiem aeterna dona eis Domine (Grant them eternal rest, O Lord is sung three times. This piece was begun shortly after the death of Marilyn Nichols, librarian and wife of Kenneth Nichols, composition professor at Brandon University.Intended as the last movement of Requiem, it should be performable by amateur groups and church choirs. The piano interlude is taken from the Gregorian Chant of the In Paradisum from Requiem Mass. The tone of this movement is one of rest - the final peace after the cares of earth have passed. Keep things unhurried and ethereal.In Paradisum was premiered on Sunday, March 18, 1990 at St. Matthew’s Cathedral by the Brandon University Chorale, Earl Davey, conductor.
