Shall We Gather at the RiverRobert Lowry, 1864Easy intermediate PIANOFrom the author/composer of How Can I Keep from Singing, Low in The Grave He Lay/Christ Arose, All the Way My Savior Leads Me, We’re Marching to Zion and I Need Thee Every Hour comes this classic hymn of longing for heaven, worship and fellowship by Robert Lowry, 1864.On a ministry visit to a grieving family he was asked, “Pastor, we have parted at the river of death. Will we meet again by the river of life?” Lowry assured her from Revelation 22:1 they they would. Then, later that afternoon he wrote both the words and the music of Shall We Gather at the River.The arrangement may serve as well as an early goal for a progressing piano student as for an intermediate to advanced player this coming Sunday.The intro announces the tune and calls the first line of the chorus to mind. After setting the meditative mood the first stanza is presented in right hand melody with left hand accompaniment that only occasionallyis rhythmically active beyond beat three. Then, the easily playable key change takes the vision to the bank of the “shining river” by way of a brief, flowing left hand figuration. While I was still in high school, the moment I first heard Holst’s suite,“The Planets,†it quickly became one of my favorite works of Classical music. “Mars, the Bringer of War,†the first movement of the suite, was easily my favorite followed by “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.†The nobility of the slow theme, which this arrangement is based on, resonated deep within my soul. This is an enigmatic and rhapsodic piece for solo piano that is composed in Whole Tone C mode and is based on the Book of Revelation Chapter 8 Verses 1-5 in the New Testament Bible. Bar 1-18 is based on verses 1-3 and is sharp, spacey and minimal - the sound of silence and of the angels. The emphasis is the sound between the notes.Verse 4 states: 'And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the Saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.' This section changes tone and phrase. There is a beautiful ascending up the keyboard, which is delecate but with hesitance. It is the light before the darkness; the potential energy before the explosion; the calm before the storm. There must be tension.Verse 5 states: 'And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the Earth, and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.'This section therefore is rather more dramatic, with a contrast of high and low pitched notes and chords. The final bars of the piece are suspension - sharp and repetative chords and ending on one sharp note - what happens next?The pianist should pedal freely throughout the piece and add their own dramatic touch to this very illistrative score.

Restaurador is a historical opera about the time in which it was restored (in the 19th century it would be called reconquistar, while in the 15th century it was called restoration), taking advantage of the strong internal crises of the Muslim world in the South of Spain. Alfonso de Arcos was part of the restoration of Jimena de la Frontera (Cádiz), the town of Estepona (Málaga), helping many situations in North Africa, Alcazarseguer (Morocco), being mayor of Tarifa and who treasured the idea of situation and who will take Gibraltar, being its first mayor. In his last years he settled in Seville in the Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas in La Cartuja, where he died. In which everything received in this historical period testamentally, his inheritance, was not given to the family, but to all the needy people of Tarifa and Gibraltar, and whoever needed it via the Cartuja monastery itself. This was the case with his entire inheritance for 200 years. Of which the family is very proud.Today Alicia Dominguez Arcos is from the Arcos family, the generational wave of Alfonso de Arcos. And today she is the first of this family branch who by chance was born in the area. Since the familiar roads are found in other Spanish cities.This Restorer for “Ibero-America is sung in choir†with SATBB voices in Spanish and English, with moments and words in both Latin and medieval Castilian. They are fragments of the fourth act of the opera, in which Alfonso de Arcos is already in his last moments, already being mayor of Tarifa, and being the first mayor of Gibraltar, circumstances of the will, situations with the friars in the monastery of the Cartuja as with the trance of his death.Being an important time in the southern area of Spain, specifically in the Campo of the Gibraltar.

After a brief return to F for the final stanza (with a descant limited to top space F) there is a subtle surprise by joy to Em and on to a singable ending in G, with options for second soprano. The voicing range from unison to 2-part and on to 3 and 4 parts, but in a singable, approachable range for choirs of medium ability and only a hint of easily sung divisi.The accompaniment is active but playable and the score suggests a harpsichord voice as the keyboard option.
