Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. She began piano lessons at the age of 8, and started composing shortly thereafter.Stevens approaches her compositions as an artist. She paints musical portraits of the things that bring meaning to life: relationship to living things, emotional healing, discovering what matters most and honoring that as best we are able. Stevens' beautiful piano-based music aligns one with their own heart. Although some of her music can be described as New Age, her roots are heavily based in classical and jazz. Her study of classical composition makes her music more complex than some New Age music. Her music has been likened to the impressionistic composers such as Claude Debussy. Sydney's formal training is also reflected in her ability to compose for orchestral instruments. Her latest release, Cycles of Life, was solely recorded and produced by Sydney, programming all of the virtual instruments.Sydney has a great love for jazz. Keith Jarrett was an influence on her with his innovative and improvisational piano recordings and performances. She was particularly impressed with the freedom of style he portrayed in his performances. Bill Evans was something Sydney heard played as a young child. Where her mother was a classical pianist, her father was a jazz pianist. Perhaps that's why some of Sydney’s music can be described as a crossover between classical and jazz--remnants from those early years. Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins were big inspirations for Sydney's songwriting. She was especially drawn to the deeply emotional lyrics in many of their songs.Cycles of Life, the title track from Sydney's current release, was composed for her late step dad. The song is about the cycle of birth and death: Cycles of life go on, yet we carry all that we've known and loved through the ages. Time, another track on Sydney's current release, is a song about how time passes more quickly when we are doing something we cherish. Brian's Song, inspired by the loss of her father-in-law, reflects: All that really matters is the way we fill our heart, and the ways that it has loved. Dawn, a track from Sydney's album Seasons, is a beautiful piano-based instrumental with light string background. It portrays that very peaceful hour as the sun slowly lights up the world -- the hour of dawn.Sydney is a poet. She sees the world through a heart that feels the joy and sorrow of the world and those she meets. Her gift is the ability to transfer that emotion into music. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.971687 Composed by Michael E. Ropp. 20th Century,A Cappella,Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 11 pages. Michael E. Ropp #2034327. Published by Michael E. Ropp (A0.971687). I Stand the Watch Before the Dawn is a dramatic piece for SATB choir and tenor and soprano soloists, for the season of Advent. The piece begins with the solo tenor and piano, in which the tenor plays the part of the night watchman and expresses longing for the light, and anguish at the condition of the people in the darkness. The tenor solo ends with the words Why have you forsaken us? The choir then enters a cappella (in performance, the choir can be doubled on organ using soft strings if necessary--it's difficult for the choir to get its starting pitches), and a soaring solo soprano provides the answer: the Light has come, but more than that, You were never alone; you are never alone; you will never be alone. One staging idea for this piece is to have the solo tenor up front, and the choir and soprano unseen in the rear, especially if there is a rear balcony that will hold the choir. However it is staged, this piece provides worshipers with a powerful and unforgettable reassurance that they do not face their darkest hours alone. (Please note that the MP3 file has some oddities in the dynamics; the sudden changes are artifices of how the MP3 is rendered from Finale and should not be interpreted literally.).

Dawn, the second track from the debut album 'Reflections' (2010). This is another piece that was inspired by text and started life as part of a poetry and music collaboration project called Severn Spirit with Jeff Phelps and Simon Fletcher c.2002. It was later developed slightly before being recorded for the album. It's most unique and special use though was when it was performed at the wedding of close friends when they asked me to play it live as the bride walked down the aisle. I'm still flattered that they chose this piece to be played during such a personal and important part of their day.

In this empty loft of high windows the shades are lifting, and people are arrived; To you: in the early silence between us that IS, folded deep into night & and the black well of SourcesIn-here is gone forth to meet in-there & we ARE bound below a sound or gesture;Beneath distance, before time, at the foot of the silent forest, meet me here, I love you.A fire is crackling, I have risen early before the dawn - love and how long I have need of you all I feel;Don’t know where you are or what’s happening, yet surely the morning stars will shed their light in desolate places, and this just from me first thing in the morning, love. Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755301 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 23 pages. Sy Brandon #6287697. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755301). Aurora was composed for Cristian Pastorello, Assistant Professor of Music at Aurora University. The name of the university where Dr. Pastorello teaches was the inspiration for this composition. Further research into the meaning and mythology surrounding Aurora gave rise to the individual movements. I. Goddess of Dawn – The music of this movement reflects a sunrise from its first hint of light to its full-blazed glory. II. Ravens - Spirit Guides – Many North American cultures believed that the Aurora Borealis represented spirits of departed ancestors. Ravens were often thought to be the conveyor of the spirit to the heavens. This movement is a scherzo and trio. The scherzo represents the dancing and playful spirits where the trio has an ethereal quality. III. Sister of the Sun and Moon - The Greeks held that Aurora was the sister of Helios and Seline, the sun and moon respectively, and that she raced across the early morning sky in her multi-colored chariot to alert her siblings to the dawning of a new day. This movement contains colorful harmony. The left hand plays a rising line representing dawn while the right hand represents Aurora racing across the sky through rapid musical motifs. IV. Celestial Battle Between Good and Evil - It is said that many of the early Chinese legends associated with dragons were a result of the Northern Lights. The belief is that the lights were viewed as a celestial battle between good and evil dragons that breathed fire across the firmament. Battle music dominates the first two-thirds of this movement before giving way to the triumph of good over evil.

Harp - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.797493 Composed by Carol Wood. Celtic,Halloween,Holiday,New Age,Spiritual. Score. 22 pages. Afghan Press Music for the Harp #4886961. Published by Afghan Press Music for the Harp (A0.797493). While all eight of these Celtic holidays may not be truly ancient, several of them certainly are; some, like Samhain, have had Christianizing veils cast over them but have kept many of the pre-Christian customs associated with their celebration. Interested harpists will find a wealth of available information about these holidays, their names, and their customs. Imbolc, February 1st or 2nd, is also the Feast of St. Bridget or Brigid and is associated with the ancient goddess of that name in Celtic mythology.Ostara is the name sometimes given to the neo-Celtic celebration of the Spring Equinox. This piece depicts the dawn of the day and of the year. Beltaine, the joyous celebration of spring’s warmth and wealth of flowers and new greenery, occurs on the first day of May. The longest day of the year and the shortest night mark the Summer Solstice-Midsummer. Since long before Shakespeare’s funny and lyrical play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Summer Solstice has been associated with magic.Lughnasadh, on August 1st, is the festival of the first harvest. A version of the name of this festival survives in Manx and Scots Gaelic as well as in Irish Gaelic, and the name itself derives from Lugh, one of the most important Celtic godsMabon marks the Autumn Equinox and the end of summer; for me, it is a wistful moment of the year-extremely beautiful yet transitory. Samhain is one of the most significant celebrations in the Celtic year- the word itself means the end of summer, the beginning of the dark part of the year. It survives even in non-Celtic countries as Halloween, thanks to its adoption into the Christian calendar as All Hallows’ Eve. It is said to be the time when the veils between this world and the next are at their most thin. The Winter Solstice is marked in many European cultures as a time for celebrating the birth of the new light and a time for decorating with evergreens like holly. For The Holly King, modal and traditional versions of the carol The Holly and the Ivy, were used because of the lyrics’ references to the rising of the sun, and the running of the deer.

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1059328). Score:https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/19984192?aff_id=175705Setting of the poem by S N Solomons based on Supervielle's L'Aube dans la chambre for alto and classical guitar. Performed by the composer ... The first light comes, touching the sleeping mind, stroking the head, confirming who it is. Colours prick through the window pane, with silent customary tread. Pale light from Palestine and Java leans over the bed and spreads. Grey light reluctant to leave China powders the glass deepens its image as you come close. Yellow light strokes the window pane, sombre light stains the human comedy sprawled on the bed. And then the watching soul immanent, anxious says All is still well. The substance of our days is whole. No greater pain exists than to feel pain no more, with the soul helpless before locked doors. Alas Time will arrive, and death deprive. Meanwhile take I delight flattering his form guessing his contour beneath the sheets; sensing his blood seeking complexity, feeling his hands fleeting, stirred by some dream; leaving no trace in Time or Space. Let me think no more thoughts for fear he may wake. Let me be quieter than the leaf that grows. Or the rose..

Published by Vocal Works (A0.741949). A completely different setting of the text written a year after the original for choral composition contest. In Bethlehem, the House of Bread, the Bread of Life is found, For David’s root and David’s branch is born in David’s town. A manna in our wilderness, a gift that we might live, Lies in the oxen’s manger, His life to freely give. Oh Wonderful! is in the stable, Counselor lies on the hay, Mighty God with sheep and oxen makes His bed on Christmas Day. The new-forged light o’er Bethlehem guides seekers from afar; Reveals the place where lightly lies the Bright and Morning Star. His dawning beams with mercy, for He will freely be Our compass and our lantern for all eternity. Oh Wonderful! is in the stable, Counselor lies on the hay, Mighty God with sheep and oxen makes His bed on Christmas Day. The shepherds bring their milk-white lambs before the Lamb of God And mark the oxen, rams and kine about Him on the sod. The last and lasting sacrifice, fulfilling all the law, Without a spot or blemish, lies nestled in the straw. Oh Wonderful! is in the stable, Counselor lies on the hay, Mighty God with sheep and oxen makes His bed on Christmas Day. The wise lay gifts around the child, the Gift of Father’s love, The Author of salvation’s song, the Bread sent from above. Oh Wonderful! is in the stable, Counselor lies on the hay, Mighty God with sheep and oxen makes His bed on Christmas Day. The Prince of Peace lies soft and sweetly on His bed this Christmas Day.

Clarinet,Flute,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1453141 Composed by Sy Brandon. 21st Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival. 93 pages. Sy Brandon #1032369. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.1453141). Aurora has different interpretations in many cultures throughout the world. The meaning and mythology surrounding Aurora gave rise to the individual movements. The rising line represents dawn while the rapid musical motifs represent Aurora racing across the sky.

The opening key of A Natural Minor depicts a cold and eerie morning before the dawn has broken. The key change to A Major warms the listener as the day approaches, and creatures from the earth and sky begin to wake. Notice the sounds of the day including bird calls (bar 35), the sun rising (bar 45), and church bells pealing in the distance (bar 58). As the texture in the music intensifies, it symbolises all forms of life engaging in their daily activities (bar 63). As the climax unfurls (bar 73), the focus returns to the majestic sun, as it continues its journey into the sky. This piece is to be played with the sustain pedal throughout. Specific pedal suggestions have been marked in various bars. Touches of rubato are required at times to allow the piece space. The melodic line must always be emphasized over the accompaniment, regardless of the clef.
