This beloved holiday classic is arranged with the early beginner in mind and is perfectly suitable for students nearing the end of the Bastien Primer B or Alfred Primer C method series. Piano Primo is written in Middle C Position, uses eighth notes, and is played one octave higher than written throughout the piece. There are also several spots where the left hand crosses over the right hand to reach a note that is outside of Middle C Position. Notes are also slightly enlarged for easier reading. Piano Secondo is ideal for a teacher or intermediate student who is comfortable with reading both hands in bass clef. The harmony changes ever so slightly with each iteration. Only 5 days are written here, but it would be easy to add repeated bars to get through all 12 days. Either way, this makes for a great piece for a young student at a winter recital! The PDF download contains both a full score and a set of individual parts - Piano Primo and Piano Secondo. Both parts are formatted to avoid any page turns.

At the end of the first verse of the carol, a counter-melody begins just as the main melody is ending. Then in the second half, the left hand answers the right hand in simple counterpoint.When my youngest daughter was turning eight, she was fixated on the American Girl Dolls. This melody is featured in one of the movies, Samantha: An American Girl Holiday and it quickly became her favorite Christmas carol. This was her birthday present that year.

The History of the Four Immortal Chaplains and the United States Army HymnDuring World War II, four Army chaplains met at the Army Chaplains School at Harvard University. ere, they received training for their assignments in the European theater. They then boarded and sailed on the United States Army Transport (USAT) Dorchester to report to their new assignments. The USAT Dorchester left New York on January 23, 1943, en route to Greenland. She carried about 900 military personnel and was escorted by Coast Guard Cutters Tampa, Escanaba, and Comanche. During the early morning hours of February 3, 1943, the vessel was torpedoed by the German submarine U-223 off Newfoundland in the North Atlantic. As the Dorchester sank on that fateful day of February 3, 1943, the four Army chaplains on board helped their soldiers board lifeboats as they handed out life jackets. When they ran out of life jackets, the chaplains gave their own life jackets to four soldiers that they might live. Then the chaplains joined arms and prayed as they went down with the Dorchester. These were young chaplains, new to the Army, holding the rank of first lieutenant. They included Methodist minister Reverend George L. Fox, Reform Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, Catholic priest Father John P. Washington, and Reformed Church in America minister Reverend Clark V. Poling. e four chaplains were posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart. Chaplain (MAJ) James F. Linzey, USA (Ret.), who was one of four military chaplains in his family, composed the United States Army Hymn, “Eternal Father, Hear Our Prayer,” in remembrance of the “Four Immortal Chaplains” on board the Dorchester. Also, James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.

The music follows on from the much easier pieces in The River at the End of Day. They are ideal for elementary pianists, but of course could be used with beginners of all ages. More experienced students will find them ideal and enjoyable sight-reading exercises or to develop the useful skill of transposing at sight. The colorful pieces are arranged in approximate order of difficulty, so you can feel free to pick and mix according to the needs of the students. Most of the pieces use eighth notes (quavers), quarter notes (crotchets), half notes (minims) and whole notes (semibreves). Each piece takes up just one page. With attractive melodies and interesting harmonies several of them could be strung together to create a suite for a student recital. Many of the fingerings are provided but sometimes the choice of fingering is left for the teacher and student to decide. For more advanced students, these pieces can serve a useful function either as sight-reading exercises or for transposing at sight, a skill that is sometimes neglected.
