It was first published in 1619 in Libro terzo di villanelle, No.2. This modern arrangement is for soprano or tenor voice and keyboard and hopes to awaken a new appreciation of Kapsperger’s genius. A variety to the accompaniment, and embellishment to the vocal line for each verse of this strophic composition, provides a practical solution for modern recital hall performance. Tom Lehrer’s A Christmas Carol (1954) was one bright spot in a sea of 1950’s Christmas song sameness, (albeit a little too edgy for the BBC - they banned it from airplay). It is merry; it is tuneful; and yet in Lehrer’s own satirical way, it points out the true meaning of Christmas – its commercialization. It also pays homage to traditional Christmas carols (Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and Angels We Have Heard on High). This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment and optional sleigh bells. It was modeled on a summer camp format and featured adult education and social reform. Christian instruction, preaching, and worship were a big part of the Chautauqua experience, although some of them were more secularized and resembled summer school.♫ Growing up in a hymn singing church, there were 2 wonderful hymns that spoke of the holiness of God: Holy, Holy, Holy and Day is Dying in the West. The first celebrates the morning, the second the evening and night. This movement also stands as a separate item, if any other quartets out there would like to play it.The quartet consists of 3 B flat clarinets and one bass clarinet.The 11-time rhythm illustrates the clumsy fat bishop's attempts to dance as Robin Hood forces him and could be accompanied by some amusing body language on the part of the performers or by an accompanying group of dancers and actors.The pdf file contains the score and parts.The sound sample is the live performance by the Iris Clarinet Quartet in February 2013.

The Messe de Minuit was written around 1694 for the Jesuit church of Saint-Louis in Paris.What is remarkable about this mass is the use of ten French noëls (Christmas carols) in the composition. In the liturgy the birth of Christ is celebrated with three masses: the first during the night of December 24th, the second in the early morning of December 25th, and the third on the day itself. A special atmosphere surrounds the first of these masses on account of the midnight hour, and so CharpenÂtier gave special expression to the long observed practice in France of including popular Christmas carols in the Christmas liturgy by including them in the composition of his midnight mass. Although the Council of Trent had forbidden this kind of borrowing of secular melodies in masses in principle, long established customs were tolerated. Charpentier’s justly famous Messe de Minuit represents a perfect synthesis between the secular and liturgical, and between the popular and learned. The Messe de Minuit was written around 1694 for the Jesuit church of Saint-Louis in Paris.What is remarkable about this mass is the use of ten French noëls (Christmas carols) in the composition. In the liturgy the birth of Christ is celebrated with three masses: the first during the night of December 24th, the second in the early morning of December 25th, and the third on the day itself. A special atmosphere surrounds the first of these masses on account of the midnight hour, and so CharpenÂtier gave special expression to the long observed practice in France of including popular Christmas carols in the Christmas liturgy by including them in the composition of his midnight mass. Although the Council of Trent had forbidden this kind of borrowing of secular melodies in masses in principle, long established customs were tolerated.
