TRAFFIC JAM is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2005 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is a lively, up-tempo swing piece that was inspired by the mayhem and frustrations of rush hour travel. The arrangement of the main theme features a small combo of Alto Sax, Trumpet, Trombone and Guitar with the rhythm section providing rhythmic counterpoint. Solo space is provided for 1st Tenor Sax, 2nd Trumpet, 1st Alto Sax and 1st Trombone. The solo sections may be opened up for players to take additional choruses if desired. A shout chorus provides the band with an opportunity to let loose. There is a fair amount of independence between sections, rhythmic shots and some fragmented melodic ideas that will require careful attention to execute accurately. ON THE BUS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2001 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is one of the first pieces I composed and arranged for big band and is based on the chord changes of Charlie Parker's Yardbird Suite. I composed the tune in the late 1980's when, as a student, I was listening to a lot of Bird and Miles and spending a lot of time catching buses! The original arrangement was done for the Queensland Youth Big Band and has been somewhat revised for this version. The head features an Alto Sax 1/Trumpet 2 soli supported with some rhythmic and melodic stabs from the ensemble. Space is provided in the chart for solos from Alto Sax1, Trumpet 2 and Piano. The chorus beginning at measure 75 features a brass section unison soli passage, composed of some of my favourite Bird and Miles licks. This provides a challenge for the brass players to keep this section tight and swinging. Fully notated rhythm section parts have been included to assist less experienced players. The chart features a shuffle groove and a catchy tune that will cure all that ails you! The main theme is presented first by the Saxes and then the trumpets. Make sure the articulations are closely observed, particularly the staccato eighth notes that happen on the beat from time to time. CLAIRE’S DILEMMA is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2004 Australian Academy Festival of Music A Grade Jazz Ensemble division. It is a lively, up-tempo number that gives the ensemble a good workout. Featuring a catchy melody and bop-style figures that will keep the sax and trumpet sections on their toes. The solo sections, loosely based on 'Rhythm changes, provide space for the 1st Trombone, 1st Tenor Sax, 1st Alto Sax and 2nd Trumpet players. While players should be encouraged to develop their own solos, written suggestions have been included on separate sheets and may be used to provide a starting point for less experienced improvisers. The chart features a dynamic, Basie-style shout chorus providing the perfect opportunity to show off a tight and exciting ensemble sound. The feel then changes to double time with another vocal chorus that may be sang as written or scatted and then an optional repeat for a piano solo. The final chorus features another of Louis' transcribed trumpet solos to take the chart out.
