Arirang is arguably the most popular and best-known Korean folk song, both inside and outside Korea. Arirang is anancient native Korean word with no direct modern meaning. 'Ari' means "beautiful" (For example the native Korean word???? means "beautiful", "lovely", "charming") 'Rang' can mean "dear".Origin of the titleMany versions of the song open by describing the travails the subject of the song encounters while crossing amountain pass. "Arirang" is one name for the pass and hence the title of the song. The Great Escape is a 1963 American film about an escape by Allied prisoners of war from a German POW camp during World War II, starring Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough. The film is based on the book of the same name by Paul Brickhill, a non-fiction first-hand account of the mass escape from Stalag Luft III in Sagan (now Żagań, Poland), in the province of Lower Silesia, Nazi Germany. The story was adapted by James Clavell, W. R. Burnett, and Walter Newman from Paul Brickhill's book The Great Escape. Brickhill had been a prisoner at Stalag Luft III during World War II. Named for the fictional siblings Linus and Lucyvan Pelt, it was released in 1964 on the Vince Guaraldi Trio's album Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named CharlieBrown. A Charlie Brown Christmas introduced thesong to a television audience of millions of children beginningin 1965. Since that special, the piece has introduced most of the Peanuts TVcartoons, with the exceptions of the specials and other TV programs producedbetween 1979 and 1992. The Red Violin is a 1998Canadian drama film directed by Fran�ois Girard. It spans three centuries andfive countries as it tells the story of a mysterious violin and its manyowners. The film received an Academy Award for the Best OriginalScore (John Corigliano), 8 Genie Awards, 9 Jutra Awards, a Golden Reel Award(for sound editing), and a Best Artistic Contribution Award from the TokyoInternational Film Festival. The film tells the story of a perfect violinknown as "the Red Violin" for its rich red colour. In each setting the dialogue is spoken in theappropriate language. Also, a variation of the movie's signature violin solo (Anna?sTheme) by composer John Corigliano is played at least once in theperiod it is played, with the exception of Cremona, where the solo is beinghummed by Anna herself. Throughout the movie, the solos are played by notedviolinist Joshua Bell. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet perfectly captures the mood of this haunting theme music, and is well-suited for most concert programmes. Duration is 2:56. Somewhere, My Love, also know as Lara's Theme is the name given to aleitmotif written for the film Doctor Zhivago (1965) by composer MauriceJarre. By special request of Connie Francis, Paul Francis Webster later tookthe theme and added lyrics to it to create Somewhere,My Love. In 1967, Somewhere, MyLove was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year. It lost to Michelle by The Beatles. Francis also had her version released as a single, and although itfailed to chart in the US, it became one of her biggest successesinternationally. This arrangement, suitable for concerts and many other occasions, is playable by either SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet, with optional Bass Saxophone doubling the Baritone. Duration is 2:40. California Dreamin' isa classic song from the mid 1960s folk-rock era written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips and was firstrecorded by Barry McGuire. However, the best known version is by The Mamas & the Papas, who sang backup on theoriginal version and released as a single in 1965. Thelyrics of the song express the narrator's longing for the warmth of Los Angeles during a cold winterin New York City. It was certifiedas a Gold Record (single) by the RIAA in June 1966 and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. This arrangement is for SSSSAB or SSSSSB Flute Ensemble.
