His family moved to Paris, after Metz and part of Lorraine were annexed to Germany in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, gaining first prizes for solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue. He won the French Prix de Rome in 1882, with his cantata Edith. His teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for the organ) and Jules Massenet (for composition).He succeeded César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898. He himself was succeeded by another distinguished Franck pupil, Charles Tournemire. Associated for many years with Édouard Colonne's concert series, the Concerts Colonne, from 1903, Pierné became chief conductor of this series in 1910.His most notable early performance was the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, at the Ballets Russes, Paris, on 25 June 1910. He remained in the post until 1933 (when Paul Paray took over his duties). The Capriol Suite is a set of dances composed in October 1926 by Peter Warlock, and is considered one of his most popular works. Originally written for piano duet, Warlock later scored it for both string and full orchestras. According to the composer, it was based on tunes in Thoinot Arbeau's Orchésographie, a manual of Renaissance dances. Nevertheless, Warlock's biographer, Cecil Gray, said that if one compares these tunes with what the composer has made of them it will be seen that to all intents and purposes it can be regarded as an original work.The work is dedicated to the Breton Composer Paul Ladmirault.The suite consists of six movements:Basse-Danse, Allegro moderato, D minorPavane, Allegretto, ma un poco lento, G minorTordion, Con moto, G minorBransles, Presto, G minorPieds-en-l'air, Andante tranquillo, G majorMattachins (Sword Dance), Allegro con brio, F majorThe individual movements are very brief; a performance of the suite lasts about 10 minutes.Interesting parts for all players...scored for double wind quintet/ bass.

RayThompsonMusic #686525. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1082372). Written for wind octet :2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns and 2 bassoons. Composed in 1813, and publised in 1889, Schubert's wind octet D72 is incomplete. The minuet and trio, and finale exist, along with a fragment of 100 bars of the first movement. The 2nd slow movement (if there was one) is missing. This is my 4 movement octet: 1.Allegro (finished by me from the “fragmentâ€) 2. Allegretto (from Rosamunde string quartet†3. Menuetto and 2 Trios (original) 4. Allegro (original) Mvt.1.The fragment seems to show the end of the development, flowing into the recapitulation. I have now completed the first movment, with the expostion starting in F, and 2nd theme moduating into the Dominant C major. An optional repeat has been added, the 2nd time bar has a diminshed 7th chord I have created a new deveopment section in D minor, using themes from the fragment , which then leads into the start of the fragment., which leads to the recapitualtion. This has both themes in F and brings the movement to an end The new movement is 232 bars long. I have made some light tweaks to Schubert's original work. My new 1st mvt. lasts 5 mins 2 seconds without my repeat. (About 7 mins 20 secs with) Check out my other arrangements for wind quartet, wind quintet and wind dectet Mvt.2 is an arrangement of the slow movement of the “Rosamunde†string quartet. I have transposed this into Bb. (NATURAL HORN PARTS in Bb basso)(Hn in F provided) Mvts 3/4 are Schubert’s originals, but the clarinet parts are in Bb, rather than C. The mp3 is of the 1st movement.

An original composition based on the 12 Days of Christmas, for wind quintet.The Twelve Days of Christmas is an English Christmas carol. A classic example of a cumulative song, the lyrics detail a series of increasingly numerous gifts given to the speaker by their true love on each of the twelve days of Christmas (the twelve days that make up the Christmas season, starting with Christmas Day).This is NOT a standard play through of all 12 verses.It could be a challenge for your audience to sing along to, I suggest you tell them not to try!I have added/removed/inserted bars of different length, changed the timing of entry for each new day, and generally had fun.I started the piece in the key of Bb, modulating through C, Db, D and ending in Eb!I have also added syncopation in parts. This gives the piece more interest both for the player and the listener!!The melody is carried by varying members of the quintet at different times.

A classic example of a cumulative song, the lyrics detail a series of increasingly numerous gifts given to the speaker by their true love on each of the twelve days of Christmas (the twelve days that make up the Christmas season, starting with Christmas Day).This is NOT a standard play through of all 12 verses.It could be a challenge for your audience to sing along to, I suggest you tell them not to try!I have added/removed/inserted bars of different length, changed the timing of entry for each new day, and generally had fun.I started the piece in the key of Bb, modulating through C, Db, D and ending in Eb!I have also added syncopation in parts. This gives the piece more interest both for the player and the listener!!The melody is carried by varying members of the dectet at different times.

The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I.The six movements are:Prélude. Vif (E minor)Fugue. Allegro moderato (E minor)Forlane. Allegretto (E minor)Rigaudon. Assez vif (C major)Menuet. Allegro moderato (G major)Toccata. Vif (E minor) Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements.The movements used were Nos.1, 3, 5 and 4 in that order.The word tombeau in the title is a musical term popular from the 17th century, meaning a piece written as a memorial. The specific Couperin, among a family noted as musicians for about two centuries, that Ravel intended to evoke is thought to be François Couperin the Great (1668–1733).Ravel stated that his intention was to pay homage more generally to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suite, not necessarily to imitate or pay tribute to Couperin himself in particular. They were dated 1854 and were dedicated to his friend Julius Otto Grimm. Their composition coincided with the beginning of the composer's lifelong affection for the pianist and composer Clara Schumann, who was helping Brahms launch his career. Frédéric Chopin had written the last of his famous ballades only 12 years earlier, but Brahms approached the genre differently from Chopin, choosing to take its origin in narrative poetry more literally.Brahms's ballades are arranged in two pairs of two, the members of each pair being in parallel keys. The first ballade was inspired by a Scottish poem Edward found in a collection Stimmen der Völker in ihren Liedern compiled by Johann Gottfried Herder. They both date from after the 1856 death of Robert Schumann when Brahms was residing in Detmold and had access to an orchestra.Brahms had a goal of reaching Ludwig van Beethoven's level in writing symphonies, and worked long and hard on his first symphony, completing it only in 1876 when he was 43 years old. As preliminary steps in composing for orchestra, he chose early on to write some lighter orchestral pieces, these Serenades.The second serenade was first sent to Clara Schumann, who was delighted by it. It was written in 1859 and dedicated to her.The first public performance, reportedly for full orchestra (version lost?), was in Hamburg on 10 February 1860.Brahms himself reworked the piece for piano 4 hands in 1875.The same year he revisited the orchestral version, this time for a small chamber orchestra.The new scoring was for :piccolo,2 flutes,2 oboes,2 clarinets (in A for movements I, IV, V; in C for movement II; and in B flat for movement III),2 bassoons, 2 horns, violas, cellos, and double basses.(omitting violins, brass, and percussion)The five movements take approximately thirty minutes to perform.Allegro moderato (A major)Scherzo. They are generally considered among the finest short solo works for the instrument and hold an important place in contemporary concert repertoire. Although Chopin did not invent the nocturne, he popularized and expanded on it, building on the form developed by Irish composer John FieldThis is probably Chopin's best loved Nocturne, if not his best known piece.Unlike other arrangements you may find, my arrangement shares the melody amongst flute, clarinet and oboe.The horn provides harmony throughout, has one bar of solo, and takes the bass line for a time.The bassoon provides a mainly sustained bass line, as an impression of the piano pedal, rather than isolated quavers.I have NOT simply copied Chopins original quaver figures (in the original left hand piano) but have created an original piece as though it had been composed for wind instruments!The quintet do NOT play TUTTI all the time: this gives a more interesting and varying sound palette.ENJOY.
