It is versatile and catchy, and has been performed by our Vocal Bands as well as our larger ensembles. This arrangement has the drive and momentum of the original song but with delicate moments, and some 5-part harmony as the song progresses. VOCAL LAYOUT:The melody, or lead line, is divided amongst the vocal parts to give variety. The B.G (background) parts replicate the instrumental accompaniment of the original track, filling out the arrangement and creating the contemporary texture that is at the heart of Pop A Cappella. When it's performed, it should be heavy on the rhythm and bass! The Rhythm (Beatbox) and Bass should be a feature, and they provide the arrangement with the groove and vibe it needs.The dynamics give an indication which vocal parts should be strongest at any given moment, but changes may need to be made depending on the number / balance of singers, and the strengths of each vocal section. As a general rule, the melody or lead should be strongest, followed by any harmony parts (those with lyrics), followed by any background parts (Oos / Ahs / Dms, etc).The full arrangement is scored for SSAB and Vocal Percussion (beatboxing). The song also works as SATB and could be transposed into lower key to help with some of the higher passages.RHYTHM and BASS:This Beatboxing part is suitable for moderate to advanced performers, and is scored used drum notation. Bernie Taupin's beautiful lyrics present an elegy for a departed friend or father figure who now lies in the soft brown earth that holds him, forever always young. The lyrics drew from Elton John one of his most gorgeous melodies and I have kept much of the harmony intact in this arrangement, although the second verse gets a bit more ambitious. In addition, the melody is shared out between the various vocal parts, meaning that the basses don't have to spend the entire performance going doo doo!Scored for Soprano solo, SATB á capella, this moderately difficult arrangement involves frequent splits in the Soprano and Bass parts, occasional splits in the alto and none at all in the tenor! In my arrangements, I like to go one step beyond simply presenting the original song for choir, so in the second verse there's the gentlest of subtle nods to Paul Simon's The Boxer at the mention of he could have been a boxer and the lyric knocked me down provides an opportunity for a choral cascade from top to bottom. And just before the final chorus, the choir's vocal lines represent the trajectory of an arrow, shooting up to a top F in the soprano solo part before descending into the new key of B flat major for the closing section.For medium to advanced chamber choirs.

(click here to see a clip of this scene from the movie) This beautifully written piece is penetrating and pensive in describing the battle within, the solitude of it, the impossibility at hand, and generally, the struggle involved in pushing oneself. There is a powerful but subtle orchestration here; the sound of a kind of musical undertow — an undertow that is pulling our hero down, as if giving him leaden legs, or of running in quicksand. But there is also a twinkle of possibility. At the end, the [music] trails off and there is uncertainty in the air.” [From: Jack Doyle, “Philadelphia Morning: 1976-1977,” PopHistoryDig.com, March 25, 2015.]This brass quintet arrangement of Philadelphia Morning would work well as a short concert piece that showcases the expressive qualities of the French horn as well as that of the whole ensemble. This piece has a quiet, pensive, somewhat moody tempermanent. While this arrangement is not technically challenging (other than the range for the horn part noted below), the lean scoring and soft dynamics requires the ensemble to pay close attention to balance and play as one in style, tone quality, and expressiveness. Phrases passing from one player to another need to flow as if being played on a piano. The expressive opening eight-bar horn solo, which is a direct transcription from the movie score, is mostly unaccompanied and ranges up to a high b-flat so a strong, confident horn player is needed – but they will surely enjoy playing this elegantly written passage. (The film soundtrack recording features Vincent DeRosa on horn.) The bass trombone part can be played on a tuba.
