Stile Antico: On a theme of Palestrina (2012) for 5-voice cello ensemble The title Stile Antico refers a style of musical composition from the 16th century which was often employed in church music, because it allowed the words (sacred text) of each singer to be clearly heard. This pre-classical polyphony was many-voiced and without instrumental accompaniment. Inspired by a theme from a mass by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (c. 1525 – 1594) ‘Praestet hoc nati genitor, I present a modern cello ensemble rendition of this ‘ancient style.’ Most conspicuous of the work’s attributes is the use of time. Rather than moving the musical ideas and themes towards a goal or through structural development and a sense of progress, the music (and time) unfolds perhaps as the natural swing of a pendulum; neither clinging to a past, nor anticipating a future. The listener beholds one moment continuously being reshaped through sound. Also, the concepts of melody and harmony as we assume them today are blurred. Of the five players, no one has the melody, no one has the harmony, yet together the ensemble combines to create a continuous flux of melodic-harmony (or harmonic-melody). This idea is of another type of ‘stile antico.’ Within the ideas of alchemy, which richly influenced the music of the 16th century and beyond, exists the concept that one plus one equals three. That is, two objects also create a ‘between-ness.’ So too with musical voices; the combination of two voices creates a new between-ness. Originally the text for a Gregorian chant, it was later used in polyphonic motets of the 16th century – and many settings have been composed since then. Perhaps the enduring appeal of the poem is based on its simple depiction of Christ’s humanity and humility, together with its expression of devotion to his mother, Mary. In composing my own setting, it pleased me to think of the choir as representing the worldly creatures (people and animals) present at Jesus’s birth; and the saxophone as an otherworldly, mystical presence hovering above. It’s a fanciful notion, but I found it inspiring.

The title of this 14-minute piece reflects the fact that it was commissioned by my dear late friend Edwin Good to perform on his beautiful Thomas and Barbara Wolf copy of the very first piano. (Cristofori, 1700). It is playable on the modern piano as well. The movements are as follows: 1. In Medias Res: Fanfare (begins at 0:00 in the mp3 file) is a showy, energetic, brief, humorous beginning.2. Ricercar (begins at 0:33 in the mp3 file) uses the imitative techniques of 16th century instrumental music, with modern harmonies.3. For JSB (begins at 3:25 in the mp3 file) was composed in loving homage to Johann Sebastian Bach.4. Burlesca (begins at 6:15 in the mp3 file) is another moment of humor and energy.5. Nocturne (begins at 8:04 in the mp3 file) is, of course, night music.6. Passacaglia (begins at 11:04 in the mp3 file) continues without break from the Nocturne. In the left hand, a pattern of several notes repeats many times, organizing the music. Simultaneously, the right hand quotes fragments from the other movements.NOTE: The mp3 file is automated, but gives a rough sense of the music.

Variations on La Folia for Concert BandScore previewThe content of the work consists of personal experiences of the composer.On the one hand, the composition plays with the theme of the Spanish/Portuguese folia from the 16th century. This movement model has since been used by composers again and again as a model for a number of variation works.On the other hand, the composition consists of a motif of 5 notes (F-Bb-E-F-Gb), which recurs in different constellations throughout the work.After the opening, the folia theme is heard in the form used by Antonio Salieri in his 26 variations.The composition proceeds through many variations of the folia, combined with variations of the opening motif, and passes through many different emotional moments. Joy is marred by brute interjections. There is fear of the unknown and at the same time curiosity and anticipation. A rollercoaster of emotions for 13 minutes until the work closes with the opening motif.

In his piece, the composer Enjott Schneider from Munich examines a theme from the 16th century: The Catalan composer and vihuela player Luis de Milán (1500-1561) is one of the most important composers of the Spanisch Renaissance. His collection 'El Maestro' from 1536 was the first publication of vihuela music in music history, the vihuela being an archetype of the guitar. The six pavans contained therein embody the ceremonial processional dance. According to the etymological derivation of 'pavo' (Spanish/Latin: 'peacock'), one can sometimes even hear in this peacock's dance the typical cry of this bird which may be performed very freely and naturalistically by the saxophone player.

The word Boustrophédon is a 16th century expression which refers to an archaic type of writing in which, after having written a line from left to right, one continues the next line from right to left and then alternates directions. This is the way the oldest known latin inscriptions are written, as well as in the traditional writing of the Touaregs The etymology comes from the Greek “bous†or ox and the verbal form “trophéin†or the verb “to turnâ€. These two elements give the image that this writing is traced in the same way that the ox pulled the plow in the fields In the sub-title, there is an evocation of Rimbaud‘s famous “Vowel“ sonnet : : Oh, sublime trumpet full of strange piercing sounds The author wanted to suggest both musically and technically the manner of this style of writing in boustrophedon. The work begins thus with a sonorous strange sonorous background which suggests this type of writing. This strange atmosphere is created by glissandi on the piano strings as well as on the strings of the violin and the violoncello. These alternating movements create “strange piercing sounds†against which the flute and clarinet alternately play brief sequences which create the outline of a melody. Then the atmosphere changes : the violin, the cello and the piano come together in a percussive violent outburst, which creates a tragic, passionate feeling which may also be considered “strange piercing soundsâ€. Several long aleatoric phrases are then presented like a sonorous halo which intensify to bring the lister to an intense Chorale-like phrase which serves as the central pillar of the work. This phrase is repeated several times, each time gaining in intensity to bring the work to its summit.
