Having read many of the novels of Patrick O'Brian about the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, I thought I would write music for a hypothetical film based on these novels. I started H.M.S. Surprise long before I learned that such a film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World was actually being made. I had neither seen the movie nor heard the music used in it.H.M.S. Surprise consists of two movements for chamber orchestra. The first, In the Harbour, serves as an introducton. It portrays an existence which is peaceful and devoid of the difficulties to be encountered later. To be sure, there is some back-street intrigue and romantic entanglement, but life is generally pleasant. The second movement, At Sea, immediately follows the first and is considerably longer and more programmatic. It begins with typical adventure at sea music and soon becomes an imitation of a sailor's hornpipe, begun by the flute. Next comes the storm or the battle or perhaps both at the same time. Calm returns and the sailors give thanks by singing a hymn. Thanksgiving turns to celebration as everyone on deck plays one tune or another, including even the Captain, Jack Aubrey, who plays the violin. Later Captain Aubrey and his friend, Steven Maturin, physician, spy and cellist, play a duet before the music comes to a rousing conclusion.

This is a flamenco guitar arrangement of Malaguea, a pianopiece written by Cuban pianist/composer Ernesto Lecuona. It was originallyadapted for solo Spanish/Flamenco guitar by Carlos Montoya in 1961 and is widely believed to have been originallywritten for the guitar. The fact that Lecuona wrote the piece in thestyle of Spain is likely what makes the Spanish guitar arrangement feel like itbelongs to the instrument. Anotherreason for its association with Spanish guitar is the fact that the main melodyfrom the piece was not Lecuona?s invention but was taken from the ?Malaguea? flamencoform, originating out of Mlaga, Spain, in the 19th century. ?Malaguea,? andthe melodic lines associated with it, is one of the traditional styles of Flamenco/Andalusianmusic. This rendition is ?in the style of Sabicas,? a Spanish Gypsy guitaristwho is considered by many to be one of the finest flamenco solo guitarists of his time. Lecuona?sMalaguea is typically found as a solo piano piece in the key of C# Phrygian,whereas on the guitar, (as is the case with this arrangement) it isnormally arranged in E Phrygian.

It wasn’t until I set out to write this piece that I did research on one of my favorite photographic techniques. I always called bokeh those cool looking out of focus lights. Once I learned the techniques name, my fascination with it grew. In my research, I found that the photographs I was drawn to the most were those of out of focus city lights, and out of focus Christmas lights. One had a frantic beauty, the other a more calming comforting beauty. All beautiful in their own unique way. I wanted to capture in music what the photographer captured in film. To capture a certain kinetic electric energy. To capture a certain kind of momentary beauty. To see through music the photographers eye. The electronics were created from synths using various effects such as phasing, reverb, granulation & more. Processed vocals, educational material on the subject of energy, as well as recordings of President Barack Obama's comments on green energy were also utilized. Bach and Frederic Chopin, whose works stand as essential repertoire for any student of the piano.  Using Bach’s and Chopin’s examples, my goal was to compose in all twenty-four keys, yet offer my own variation on the progression of key signatures – Bach’s being a pattern of major to parallel minor progressing chromatically through all keys, and Chopin’s a pattern of major to relative minor keys progressing clockwise through the circle of fifths.  In order to expand my harmonic and melodic possibilities, I have included the modal keys rather than only the major and harmonic minor keys, and have chosen to work counterclockwise through the circle of fifths, which is a more natural harmonic progression.  Therefore, all major preludes resolve from one to another V-I, as well as do all the minor preludes.  While there are seven modal scales, I decided to leave out the locrian modes for the following reasons.  First, due to the diminished fifth, the locrian mode cannot be thought of as either major nor minor.  Second, the locrian mode did not have a relative key to pair with, since there were no other keys with the identical characteristic notes.  In creating the key architecture, I determined that there was only one solution to pairing major and relative minor scales based on a shared parent key and characteristic note - ionian/aolian, mixolydian/phrygian and lydian/dorian.  This specific order of modal scales is the only order that would enable composing in all twelve key signatures.  Finally, the inspiration for each prelude came from playing through several other preludes in the same keys - mostly by Bach and Chopin - and letting their themes and styles influence me in the writing of my own.YouTube Link https://youtu.be/xb4E0I-vJek.
