I was requested to write a brass sextet shortly after the dog who had lived with me 14 years had passed. The result, for Sasha, is a brass sextet far more emotionally deep than the typical literature. A brief introduction of materials segues into movements one and two that explore the mental confusion and memories of Sasha's passing, including little nonsense songs I used to sing to him. The third movement explores my anger and then segues into the last movement where a resolution is never quite reached.This is beautiful and challenging music. Here is a description of the work IN MEMORIAM by composer Brian Pappal. In Memoriam: A Chorale After Bruckner was composed in memory of Murray Crewe, former Bass Trombonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Murray was my private trombone teacher at Duquesne University where he maintained a large studio of private trombone students and directed the trombone choir. During my lessons with him and in trombone choir rehearsals, Murray was contagiously positive and encouraging with a sense of humor all his own. He was also an artist of immense depth and sensitivity who daily sought to create and encounter moments of beauty in the world. Some of my greatest musical memories of Murray are of his leading the trombone choir in playing transcriptions of Brucknerâ??s choral motets. There are obvious parallels between the voice and the trombone, and Murrayâ??s artistry combined with Brucknerâ??s profound compositions created a deeply moving experience for me as a young musician. I wrote this piece with those memories in my mind. The sonorities are intentionally vocal, and performance of the piece should be approached in a similarly sustained and expressive style. The first trombone part remains rather high without rest; it may be played by either a tenor or alto trombone depending on player preference.

Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.1342598). 8 Ball is an exploration of the emotional swings of grief — shock and sorrow, emptiness and isolation, pain and finality — mixed with wistful, treasured memories recognizing the blessing of sharing life with a loved one, and added to this the hope of eternal reunion. It’s written in memory of my brother, Tex, who we lost to COVID in 2020. In homage to his passion, dirt track racing, there is a contrasting section of paint-swapping, fender-bending frenzy, which comes to an all too sudden end as did his life. The title has nothing to do with billiards but refers to his long-tenured racing number and logo.The music uses unconventional scales which are actually six-tone pitch sets treated as different key centers. They produce a lush mixture of consonance and dissonance that at turns feel comforting and unsettling.Writing 8 Ball was a cathartic experience to explore my own emotions, cement my brother’s proper place in my memories, and produce a tangible expression of my love for my brother. It was written as an assignment in the 2023 summer composition workshop at Tarrant County College. I’m grateful to my instructor, Dr. Aaron Kline, the music department at TCC, and the musicians of our performing quartet for their part in bringing this music to life.

Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden (2009) for clarinet, bass clarinet, pipa, and erhu (score and parts) I composed this piece imagining myself in a garden of images, sonorities, and aromas that all merge in an idyllic moment in time. I have taken a line from one of T.S.Eliot’s poems in the Four Quartets, for my title, Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden. The poem, Burnt Norton, concludes with the poignant truth that humankind cannot bear very much reality. I often wonder whether my work as a composer really has any significance or meaning beyond helping my listeners temporarily escape their personal realities. In recalling Eliot’s line, What might have been and what has been/ point to one end, which is always present I am reminded that a melody, a single line of lyric pitch flow evokes memory in the mind of the listener and that rhythm and accent often draws our attention to the present moving towards the future. So, with these inherent powersof music in mind, it was my goal to create a piece of vibrant and engaging music that relentlessly draws the listener into the present moment. Eliot also alludes to a timeless merging of present and past in this poem. His line, then a cloud passed and the pool was empty brought back memories of being a child watching clouds almost unnoticeably move across the sky. I was similarly inspired to conclude Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden with music that evokes an ecstatic stillness tempered with a longing for the past. WGN

Capriccio      This lively capriccio features a bouncy melody that is imitated in canon through the other two clarinets. Then the descending fourth motive introduced early is developed in a series of succinct statements. The movement ends with a three part canon with each clarinet racing against the others.  II. Elegy*     After someone leaves our lives there are lingering reminders of the pain of their absence combined with the sweetness of the happiest memories. The middle section represents a flashback to happier times yet the sustained notes hint that something is not quite right. In the end the melody is unable to resolve as it should yet those around it continue on their way.     *Please note that the bass clarinet player should play soprano clarinet for this movement only.  III. Frenetic      This piece would not have been written were it not for the prodding of my friend and fellow composer Felix Rivera. I would joke with him that he may never write a piece not based on tritones and he quipped back that I may never write a piece for clarinets. I decided it was time to fix not having a clarinet selection in my repertoire and this work is the result. Published by Ndodana-Breen (A0.928493). Migration, dislocation and exile have always been key themes in the historical narrative of the Black experience in South Africa. These three pieces for string quintet are personal responses/reflections to the various journeys that affected and shaped the lives of many. It can be argued that to some extent, South Africa continues to live with the sociopolitical consequences of this history of migration and dispossession.The unifying factor in all those who were touched by these journeys is memory. Remembering the lives left behind, the people, the songs, the dances, the connection to the land. Time might wear away the detail and new experiences splinter entire memories to fragments but nothing is completely erased. A certain driving rhythm, a flash of timbre, a fragment of melody, a cadence, a turn of musical phrase, even a few dance steps. These stay within as faint echoes, repeated sequences sometimes layered over each other, stuttering, staggering or sometimes as clear lyrical songs and dances, vibrant as the day first experienced. Safika means we arrived in Xhosa and in the context of these pieces, is an allegorical terminus of these journeys where reflection, affirmation and restoration begins.

This unaccompanied solo for xylophone explores the full dynamic and melodic range of the instrument and is sure to put a smile on a nostalgic audience.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition, and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.
