This organ piece is ideal as liturgical piece for Lent and All Saints' Day/Sunday before Advent commemorating the dead but also for organ concerts on the topic of death and transitoriness. 'Poème funèbre is a very personal piece which, like an epitaph, shall bring to mind the death of a person who died young. I think such a remembrance is important, for it connects people with the dead. The first part is a musical expression of lament and grief: Within its symmetrical structure, the composition rises toward a dramatic climax and, diminishing, returns back to its starting point. This part is followed by a second quiet part in which the Gregorian antiphon 'In paradisum' is paraphrased in soft colours, as an expression of consolation and trusting to the sense of the yet incomprehensible.' The compositions published here for the first time are highly interesting, especially because they represent two creative periods: Poème lyrique was written in the 1910s and is a proof of the composer's intensive search for his own style. Invention and Nocturne were composed in Moscow in 1935, they are testimonies to the political pressure exerted on the composer to write in a more comprehensible, less avant-garde way. All three pieces are ideal for music lessons, yet also effective on the stage. Roslawez studied composition and violin in Moscow. He was one of the leading figures of the musical scene in the 1920s. Treated with increasing hostility for political reasons, up to being barred from pursuing his career, he spent the last years of his life in poverty.

Russian.In the days of Roslawez, the use of lyrical texts in Russian choral music was an exception. Traditionally, sacred liturgical texts were preferred in choral singing. Roslawez composed only a few choral works anyway, so this excellent cantabile piece is a real treasure. The poem 'Na poljach' (In the Fields) was written by the Russian poet Pyotr Oreshin. Little solo parts answered by the tutti, charming harmonies and a floating rhythm result in an Impressionist tonal image. The piece is quite easy to sing and will bring pleasure to both performers and listeners. Roslawez studied composition and violin in Moscow. He was among the leading figures of the musical scene in the 1920s. Treated more and more with hostility for political reasons and eventually barred from pursuing his career, he spent the last years of his life in poverty.

German • English • French.Orpheus is one of 12 symphonic poems composed by Franz Liszt between 1848 and 1858. Liszt regarded these compositions as representing a higher form of musical creation. Their genesis in what he described as a poetic idea allowed him to favour freedom of expression over the constraints of form. The score of 'Orpheus' was first performed on 16 February 1854, under the baton of the composer, as the curtain rose for a production of Gluck's opera 'Orpheus' in Weimar. It had been inspired in particular by the contemplation in the Louvre museum in Paris of an Etruscan vase despicting Orpheus as a symbol of beauty and civilisation, mitigating the brutality of the world through the power of his art. This symphonic poem was first transcribed for organ in about 1860 by Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalk (1827-1908), one of Liszt's pupils. It appears that Liszt was moved to make radical modifications to that version, in spite of which it still remains unsatisfactory. It does, however, give us the benefit of proving that Liszt, who also transcribed the work for piano duet, was not against the idea in itself of a transcription for organ. Jean Guillou's transcription is more than a simple adaptation. As far as Romantic music is concerned, he is responsible for finding appropriate equivalents to the dramatic function of instrumentation to create an atmosphere which comes as close to that of the original composition as possible, to enrich the contrapuntal texture and to contribute to the simulation of the orchestral sound.

Used as a place of worship for centuries, first by Christians and then by Muslims (from 1453), the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) still amazes people from all over the world. Since 1934, it is a museum – but more than that, the Hagia Sophia, a unique architectural work of monumental proportions in Christian Antiquity and the Middle Ages, is described as a mystical place. Monumental, yet mysterious, a 'miracle of space', a symbol, a sign. 'Sophia', the holy wisdom, accompanies us through the whole Bible history. The present music has to be regarded against this background: A reflection, contemplation with music and poetry. The Creation is powerful, but the truth about it is powerful as well. And the realization that the path to truth is reached through wisdom. As a consequence, this piece has to cross the powerful for half its duration, monumental. It is the cupola over all following (observing) verses (sections). From bar 371, the path leads back into the powerful, into the rejoicing (bar 406). It must not be forgotten to mention the suggestion of 'singing in a mosque' (bar 510) which is answered by a simple prayer (bar 511). This is reminiscent of the mosaic above the imperial door of the building portraying Jesus Christ sitting on a jewelled throne. He holds an open book in which one can read 'Peace be with you. I am the light of the world'. The line and sound of Hagia Sophia are based on a symmetrical eight-note row (mode B) with the notes B, C sharp, D, E/F, G, A flat (G sharp), B flat (A sharp). Although the major-minor relations are removed, harmonic connections (colours) emerge nevertheless.

The fingerings and bowings are also revised, keeping Ysaÿe’s traditional way but changing some of the exaggerated old fashioned style.

Amid the melodic flow of the violin, the piano undertakes sophisticated shifts of the bar accents, from swaying three-eight time to rhapsodic seven-eight time. The following 'Danse' also requires great rhythmic understanding of its performers and, with the appropriate accentuation, displays its pointed charms. With 'Deux Préludes', Scott wrote chamber music works that are perfect as effective performance pieces.

Regarded as the most significant French composer and poet of the 14th century, Guillaume de Machaut was the central figure of the ars nova style in late medieval music. The three vocal pieces included in this collection are two rondeaux Ma fin est mon commencement, Rose, liz, printemps, verdure along with the motet Je suis aussi com cils qui est ravis. An additional curiosity, the iconic rondeau Ma fin est mon commencement (My end is my beginning) has a very intricate form built on palindromic form; while one voice reads the line from left to right, the other uses the same line in the opposite direction. Both voices meet in the middle of the piece, thus creating a mirror-symmetric form. While maintaining the principal upper part vocal, my arrangement relegates the two additional voices to the guitar.Considéré comme le compositeur et poète français le plus important du XIVe siècle, Guillaume de Machaut était la figure centrale du style ars nova dans la musique de la fin du Moyen Âge. Les trois pièces vocales incluses dans ce recueil sont deux rondeaux Ma fin est mon commencement, Rose, liz, printemps, verdure ainsi que le motet Je suis aussi com cils qui est ravis. Autre curiosité, l'emblématique rondeau Ma fin est mon commencement a une forme très complexe construite sur une forme palindromique ; tandis qu'une voix lit la ligne de gauche à droite, l'autre utilise la même ligne dans la direction opposée. Les deux voix se rencontrent au milieu de la pièce, créant ainsi une forme symétrique en miroir. Tout en conservant la partie supérieure vocale principale, mon arrangement relègue les deux voix supplémentaires à la guitare.
