Ensemble Music for Church and School
Twenty-three sacred hymns and songs From the Foreword: R…
(+)
Twenty-three sacred hymns and songs From the Foreword: Recent years have seen much increase in the activities of small and medium sized instrumental ensembles in schools at all grade levels, generally as an adjunct of band and orchestral programs. Many churches and Sunday Schools also use ensembles of various types in programs and services. Such groups are looking for playable music that is also interesting and worthwhile. This collection contains settings of sacred hymns and songs, and other selections, all of which should be usable in the church and the school. The hymn and song treatments are not just instrumentations of standard hymnal type, but are complete arrangements, using such devices as introductions, bridges, reharmonizations in present day idioms, rhythmic variety, countermelodies, etc. All selections have been scored for a six (or five) part brass ensemble with the following part books available: (preferred instruments are listed before the parenthetical substitution possibilities) Part 1: C Instruments (Violin, Oboe, Flute); 1st Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet) Part 2: 2nd Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet) Part 3: 3rd Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet); F Horn (English Horn); Eb Horn (Alto Saxophone, Eb Alto Clarinet) Part 4: Baritone treble clef (Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet); Trombone (Baritone bass clef, Bassoon, Cello) Part 5: Baritone bass clef (Trombone, Bassoon, Cello) Part 6: Tuba or Sousaphone (Bassoon or Cello with occasional lower range limits, String Bass 8vb) While hoping to keep the selections interesting and worthwhile for experienced players, they have generally been restricted to a medium level of difficulty (or Grade III as defined by the Instrumentalist Magazine). Extremes of range and key signature have been avoided, lead parts have ample time to rest and catch their breath and technical demands are usually modest. Selections which could have been expanded to larger proportions (such as A Mighty Fortress) have been held to a modest length, in order to give younger musicians a better chance to play them successfully. Footnotes in the conductor's score indicate how the longer medleys can be abbreviated, if that is desirable. WESLEY HANSON
Song List: A Christmas Package A Mighty Fortress Adoramus Te An American's Pride Come, Thou Almighty King Holy, Holy, Holy I Sing the Mighty Power of God Ivory Palaces March Pontifical Music for Easter Now Thank We All Our God O God, Our Help In Ages Past O Mighty God Onward, Christian Soldiers Praise Ye The Lord, The Almighty Prayer Thanksgiving The Heavens Are Telling Three Spirituals Trumpet Tune Trumpet Voluntary Under His Wings When Morning Gilds the Skies

This score includes: * top staff with the melody notes using standard music notation* bottom staff with the melody using ukulele tablature notation * chord names above the staff for strumming along with the melody* one verse of the lyrics below the staff for sing along enjoymentChord Diagram Score This score displays the melody, lyrics, and chord diagrams. Beginning ukulele players will find the chord diagrams helpful reminders of which strings and frets to use to form the chords. This score includes: * 1-staff with the melody notes using standard music notation* chord diagrams above the staff indicating the strings and finger placement on the fret for the chord* lyrics below the staff for sing along enjoymentPiano Accompaniment ScoreThis score provides an easy accompaniment for singers and strummers or ukulele soloists. The piano incorporates the melody making it easy for singers to follow the melody. This score is especially fun to use in group settings and worship gatherings. This score includes: * 2-staff piano score with introduction, optional repeat, and second ending* lyrics below the staff for sing along enjoymentChords and Beginning Note ChartThis chart lists all chords used throughout the song and the first note of the melody. The chords are displayed using standard ukulele chord diagrams with corresponding chord symbols above each diagram. The first note of the melody is provided to insure those singing along will start on the correct note when not using the piano accompaniment. How to pluck this first note on the ukulele is also displayed on a chord diagram (pluck only the string indicated holding down on the string at the indicated fret if applicable). This arrangement is one of the 15 songs in the collection Easy Gospel Songs for Ukulele: Hymns in the Key of C (with optional Voice and Piano Accompaniment).Visit Sharon Wilson's website: www.SharonWilsonMusic.comSubscribe to her YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/user/SharonWilsonMusic

Score and parts. With Grateful Chanting: Featuring the B-flat clarinet in a pentatonic chant setting. III. 46 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #431091. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869298). Instrumentation: Flute, Bb clarinet, Horn in F, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass Program note: Septet, opus 77 ... Variations on a Shaker Tune was commissioned by Mark Ludwig for his educational series in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. When he approached me about writing a theme and variations work for the purpose of illustrating musical form, texture and orchestration to a young audience, I thought what better thing to do than to use as a theme a Shaker hymn from nearby Hancock Shaker Village. As it turns out Deborah Leath Rentz, a mezzo-soprano who is Mark's assistant at the Terezin Music Foundation, has been researching and transcribing a Shaker Hymnal, ca. 1850, created and compiled at the Hancock Shaker Village. (Deborah's project is sponsored by the Hancock Shaker Village and the Richmond Performing Series.) So I asked her to put on DAT tape a number of these hymns for me. I immediately fell in love with the very first one on the tape: Grateful Remembrance. It had a soulful, melancholic core; an almost bluesy feeling to it. In this performance, Deborah will sing the hymn a cappella in the beginning. Then, seven variations will follow. I. Grateful Remembrance: An instrumental version of the hymn. II. Grateful Chanting: Featuring the B-flat clarinet in a pentatonic chant setting. III. Grateful Funk: The bluesiness of the hymn is transformed into a funk riff. IV. Tango Remembered: A four-note fragment from the hymn is transformed into a sultry tango. V. Sambinha agradecida: The yearning flat 6th in the hymn is transformed into a samba Carmen Miranda would've loved. VI. Canonized Remembrance: The hymn is treated to a canonic transfiguration. VII. Grateful Groove: The pentatonic nature of the hymn is spun out in an Afro-cuban razzle dazzle finale!!! Enjoy!!!

Theme and Variations-Accompaniment Track, Dan CutchenTime: approximately 6:00And Can It Be That I Should Gain? is a Christian hymn written by Charles Wesley. And Can It Be was written in 1738 to celebrate Wesley's conversion, which he regarded as having taken place on May 21 of that year. This beautiful hymn has been popular and enduring. And Can It Be That I Should Gain is perhaps one of the most joyfully poignant hymns penned by Charles Wesley (1707-1788). On Whitsunday (Pentecost), May 21, 1738, three days before his brother John experienced his heart strangely warmed,’ Charles was convalescing in the home of John Bray, a poor mechanic, when he heard a voice saying, In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, arise, and believe, and thou shalt be healed of all thy infirmities. The voice was most likely Mr. Bray’s sister who felt commanded to say these words in a dream.Anglican hymn writer Timothy Dudley-Smith, notes that the following then happened:Charles got out of bed and opening his Bible read from the Psalms: He have put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God, followed by the first verse of Isaiah 40, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. He wrote in his journal, I have found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in the hope of love Christ (Dudley-Smith, 1987, 1).The statement from Mr. Bray’s sister sparked within Charles a conviction like he had never felt before. Moved and convicted in spirit, Charles wrestled with these words until he came to rest in his faith, knowing that it is by faith we are saved (Ephesians 2:8).Soon after this conversion experience, he wrote two hymns in celebration of the amazing love he had come to know: And Can It Be that I Should Gain and Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin? (United Methodist Hymnal, 342)There has been some debate as to which hymn was written first, but most current scholarship accepts the latter as the first hymn written by Charles after his conversion experience. No matter its place in the chronology of Wesley's output, And Can It Be has been and remains one of his most remarkable hymns, expressing like no other the rapturous joy of receiving salvation. And Can It Be That I Should Gain. Piano,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1005690 Composed by Thomas John Williams, 1890. Arranged by Grace Joy Reid, 2021. Christian,Sacred,Spiritual. 8 pages. Creating Music Joy #6356583. Published by Creating Music Joy (A0.1005690). The text was written in 1875 by Samuel Trevor Francis. A Welsh hymn tune, Ebenezer, composed by Thomas John Williams. Legend has it that as a young man, Samuel Trevor Francis contemplated committing suicide by jumping into the Thames River from the Hungerford Bridge in London. Experiencing the love of Jesus, he wrote these lyrics and went on to write many poems, hymns, and became a preacher, in addition to being a merchant sailor. Hymn Lyrics1 O the deep, deep love of Jesus!Vast, unmeasured, boundless, free, rolling as a mighty oceanin its fullness over me.Underneath me, all around me,is the current of thy love;leading onward, leading homeward,to thy glorious rest above.2 O the deep, deep love of Jesus!Spread his praise from shore to shore;how he loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, nevermore;how he watches o'er his loved ones, died to call them all his own;how for them He intercedeth, watcheth o'er them from the throne.3 O the deep, deep love of Jesus!Love of ev'ry love the best:'tis an ocean vast of blessing,'tis a haven sweet of rest.O the deep, deep love of Jesus!'Tis a heav'n of heav'ns to me;and it lifts me up to glory, for it lifts me up to thee.Source: Trinity Psalter Hymnal #463

Organ - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1296727 Composed by Phil Lehenbauer. Arranged by Phil Lehenbauer. Christmas,Classical,Contemporary,Sacred,Traditional. Score. 8 pages. Phil Lehenbauer #886894. Published by Phil Lehenbauer (A0.1296727). The 16th century tune Es ist ein Ros entsprungen is popular at Christmas, known as Lo, how a rose e'er blooming, A great and mighty wonder, and other texts. This arrangement is another written to feature a younger instrumentalist in your Christmas services. Parts for trombone, baritone, and trumpet are included, and other instrument transpotitions can be arranged by contacting the composer. I've used the feeling of A great and mighty wonder for this, since a faster tempo normally works better for a young musician. An experieced played can easily handle this as a slower tempo, reminiscent of Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. There are three other suites with traditional hymns and original works, under the titles of 2020, 2021, and 2022 Suites for Trombone and Organ. I hope you will give some younger players the chance to shine!

Horn,Organ,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1248898 Composed by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian,Easter,Holiday,Sacred. 21 pages. Con Spirito Music #843370. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1248898). Perhaps most often associated with Christopher Wordsworth’s Easter hymn text, “Alleluia, Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven and Voices Raise,†and his All Saints Day text, “Hark! The Sound of Holy Voices,†Arthur S. Sullivan's tune LUX EOI may be used with any hymn in 8.7.8.7 D meter.Best known for his Victorian-era collaborations with dramatist and librettist W.S. Gilbert on comic operas including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado, Sullivan (1842-1900) displayed prodigious musical talent early in life, writing his ï¬rst anthem at age eight, joining the Chapel Royal as a chorister at age 12, and earning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 14. He later studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and while still in his teens began building a reputation as a promising young composer. Among Sullivan’s works are 24 operas, 11 full orchestral works, 10 choral works and oratorios, and more than 70 hymns and anthems, including the hymn tunes ST. GERTRUDE (“Onward, Christian Soldiersâ€), FORTUNATUS (“Welcome, Happy Morningâ€), ST. KEVIN (“Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strainâ€), and the tune that is the basis for this arrangement.Following an opening fanfare by brass which is answered by organ, the verses proceed as follows: organ accompaniment verse (may be repeated as needed), brass accompaniment verse, penultimate verse (organ accompaniment with countermelody by trumpets), interlude, and ï¬nal verse (organ with brass punctuations and conclusion).©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music.
