Rimasta incompiuta per la morte dell'autore, avvenuta il 5 dicembre 1791, fu completata successivamente da Franz Xaver Sussmayr.L'opera è legata alla controversa vicenda della sua morte avvenuta il giorno successivo al completamento delle parti vocali del Lacrimosa. Stendhal parla di un anonimo committente che incaricò Mozart, malato e caduto in miseria, di comporre in quattro settimane una messa da requiem, dietro compenso di cinquanta ducati. Completato quasi certamente entro la quaresima del 1792, il Requiem venne ritenuto per un certo periodo opera del solo Mozart anche per il fatto che la calligrafia di Süssmayr risulta essere molto simile a quella di Mozart: fino agli inizi degli anni novanta del XX secolo si riteneva infatti che l'indicazione, posta in testa alla prima pagina, recitante di me W.A Mozart mppa. 1792 fosse stata apposta da Mozart stesso.Fu probabilmente solo con l'edizione a stampa di Andrè del 1827 che parte dei dubbi vennero fugati: forse per la prima volta nella storia della musica, una partitura venne pubblicata con un commento critico nel quale si tentava di stabilire con certezza ciò che è certamente di Mozart e ciò che è di pugno d'altri; l'edizione Breitkopf indicò poi con una M il materiale sicuramente mozartiano e con una S quello attribuito a Süssmayr.Leggendo il testo si può capire quanta intensità e potenza è racchiusa in questa composizione:Dies irae, dies illa, Solvet saeclum in favilla, Teste David cum Sibylla. Quantus tremor est futurus, Quando Judex est venturus, Cuncta stricte discussurus!Giorno d'ira, quel giorno distruggerà il mondo in faville, com'è attestato da Davide e dalla Sibilla. Quanto grande sarà il terrore quando verrà il giudice a valutare ogni cosa severamente.

This movement has no soprano part, it is soloist above and ATB below, giving a rich, dark quality to the music. The tenors and basses (divisi) begin this movement, declaiming “Dies irae, dies illa.†Two soloists begin in the “Flanders fields†text above. There is an option for three soloists as the piece evolves. (Soprano, tenor and baritone, the composer gives some options for this.) Soon the choir takes up the poem, yet the Latin text occasionally appears and continues, moving toward a climax on the text “We are the Dead, Short days ago We lived.†As the music descends from the high point, the English poem continues, with the choir very softly commenting “Dies irae†as the movement ends. The Lacrimosa (Latin for weeping/tearful), also a name that derives from Our Lady of Sorrows, a title given to The Virgin Mary, is part of the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Its text comes from the Latin 18th and 19th stanzas of the sequence. Lacrimosa dies illa Qua resurget ex favilla Judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce, Deus: Pie Jesu Domine, Dona eis requiem. Amen. Full of tears will be that day When from the ashes shall arise The guilty man to be judged; Therefore spare him, O God, Merciful Lord Jesus, Grant them eternal rest. Amen. The piece begins piano on a rocking rhythm in 12/8, intercut with quarter rests, which will be reprised after two bars, on Lacrimosa dies illa (This tearful day). Then follows a diatonic progression, in disjointed eighth-notes on the text resurget (will be reborn), then legato and chromatic on a powerful crescendo. The music is forte by bar 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death. Süssmayr brings the music to a reference of the Introit and ends on an Amen cadence. Discovery of a fragmentary Amen fugue in Mozart's hand has led to speculation that it may have been intended for the Requiem. Indeed, many modern completions (such as Levin's) complete Mozart's fragment. Some sections of this movement are quoted in the Requiem mass of Franz von Suppé, who was a great admirer of Mozart. Ray Robinson, the music scholar and president (from 1969 to 1987) of the Westminster Choir College, suggests that Süssmayr used materials from Credo of one of Mozart's earlier masses, Mass in C major, K. 220 Sparrow in completing this movement.

The work received its premiere performance at l’Église de la Sainte-Trinité, Paris, on October 24, 2013 by Alexis Galpérine, violin, Magali Léger, soprano, Saori Kikuchi, harp, and Carolyn Shuster Fournier, organist. The work consists of three Latin texts from the Requiem Mass. The first, Exaudi, is in “Larghetto†tempo and serves as a prelude. The second, Dies Iræ, marked “Allegro agitato,†is an intense and dark scherzo in D minor with chromatic runs in the organ and violin which accompany the soprano. A central, more lyrical section follows based on the “Lacrymosa†text in a slower tempo, leading to the song’s only serene moment: “Pie Jesu Domine.†The “Dies Irae†music returns, and the song ends violently and decisively. The third song, In Paradisum, introduces the harp. The soprano melody is modeled very closely on the Gregorian chant based on this text. A gentle climax occurs on the text “habeas eternam,†and the song slowly winds down to its end, having laid to rest life’s struggles in the eternity of heaven. Duration: 12:30.
