B-Flat Clarinet,Piano,Violin - Level 5 - SKU: A0.1208741 Composed by Adam Lenhart. Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 33 pages. Adam Lenhart #806841. Published by Adam Lenhart (A0.1208741). Introduction to The Rubáiyát of Omar KhayyámThe Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is a Persian poetry collection first put together in 1460 in Shiraz.  It consists of quatrains, four-line poems, with a set of unconventional themes.  The poetry is irreligious and questions the afterlife and God's providence.  It shows keen awareness of the shortness of life and the finality of death. It advises therefore that every fleeting moment of every day should be savored, with wine, lovers and song. The combination of a serious philosophy of life and a carefree attitude has made the poetry popular for centuries.  In 1859, Edward FitzGerald brought out a loose English translation that took the world by storm.  It became the most beloved and widely known poem in the English language for decades until its popularity finally faded in the late twentieth century. Although they were attributed to the great mathematician and astronomer, Omar Khayyam (d. 1131), the poems were by many anonymous hands, and he was just a frame author, akin to Scheherezade in the Arabian Nights.- Dr. Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of MichiganAbout the CompositionTwo Scenes from The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám explores and embodies two of the main themes that carry throughout the quatrains of the poem collection. In FitzGerald's translation, the quatrains follow a day to night cycle. The two movements reflect this by starting off with an abrupt wake up section and ending the piece with a nocturne.  The first movement, Wine, celebrates the camaraderie, joy and chaos that comes through the physical joy of being with friends. The clarinet, violin and piano interact in a conversational way, talking, laughing, and insulting one another in their own independent lines. The second movement is entitled Intimacy and explores the emotional joy of connecting with one another. The movement is set in a waltz style dance and draws influence from Chopin, Liszt and other romantic era composers. This is juxtaposed by youthful and energetic phrases so that the piece embodies all forms of love: young love, years of marriage and even friendship. Each movement has a sense of urgency and density which is present in the rubá'iyát as well, expressing to the reader that our time on Earth is so short and to make the most of each day.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition, and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. In 2020 he was awarded the Michigan Music Education Association’s Young Composers of Michigan award, as well as first prize in the University of Toledo Young Composers competition. Lenhart has also participated in numerous ensembles across Michigan, including the MYAF All-State Choir, Tecumseh Pops Orchestra, University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the SMTD University Choir. He thoroughly enjoys collaboration with other composers, performers, poets and visual artists. Some of his recent projects include collaborations with individuals from the University of Michigan Chamber Music, History, and Poetry departments.

Concert Band - SKU: A0.917412 Composed by Gregory Fritze. 20th Century,Contemporary,Folk. Score and parts. 370 pages. Musica Nova USA #6321277. Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917412). The Four Seasons in the Basque Country is a 4 movement symphony for concert band. It is the Third Prize Winner of the 2020 American Prize in Composition - Concert Band. Grade 5, duration 27 minutes. The piece depicts four different places in the Basque country that the composer feels best show the changes of season. The first movement is Winter in the Costa Norte (Galerna). Galerna is on the northerncoast and is subject to harsh storms in the winter. As the piece starts off with a light-hearted dance in thepiccolo, a storm is approaching from afar. At first the storm seems to be in the distance but as it comes closer it overtakes the festivities in a bluster. For a short time two conductors are needed as the concertband is split into two groups – one showing the light-hearted dance led by the piccolo, the other thecacophony of the storm led by the percussion. The storm overtakes everything as it ends the movement with a flourish. The second movement Spring in Rioja Alavesa is a calming contrast to the first movement like the freshness of a spring day. The sun rises and shines beams of light onto the acres of grape vines. After a timea short rain comes to refresh and clean the plants. The third movement Autumn at the Guggenheim Museum is in a traditional 3rd movement form of a symphony, minuet and trio, but the harmonies sometimes use bitonality, having the melody in one key while the accompaniment is in another to suggest surrealism. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbaois one of the world’s most famous museums, not only for the surreal art inside, but also because of the architecture of the building itself. The fourth movement Summer in Bilbao is based on a dance melody composed in the Ezpata- dantza Basque style. It employs a rhythmic element with alternating 6/8 and 3â„4 meters where the eighth notes are basically equal, but in the dance the 3â„4 meter is actually a little bit longer. This type of subtlemanipulation of rhythm is used similarly in the Viennese Waltz, when the 3rd beat would be stretched outto accommodate the dancers. The Ezpata-dantza dance continues until the Altza Gastiak, the officialsong of the Bilbao Athletic Club, the local soccer team of Bilbao, is heard. After this the Ezpata-dantzamelody is transformed from a happy dance to a triumphant melody and rousing finale. In The Four Seasons in the Basque Country all of the themes are original except for the short excerpt ofAltza Gastiakin the 4th movement. Some themes are composed in the style of Basque folk dances.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over one hundred compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe that have been performed extensively throughout the world. Many of his compositions are available on ITunes, Youtube and Soundcloud. He has been a frequent traveler to Spain since 1993 and has promoted compositions by Spanishcomposers around the world. He is the only composer who has been commissioned six times by Spanishbands for Certamen competitions, with each band winning first prize. His compositions are recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Recordsand others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University. He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida

Most people have heard the saying, 'If you don’t like the weather in New England, wait a minute.' Driving through the Berkshires one day in Western Massachusetts, I came across such an event when three short but very intense storms hit one after the other. Lightning flashed on either side of the highway, thunder crashed deafeningly all around me, and a torrent of blinding rain flooded the landscape. In between each storm was a very short yet magnificent and unsettling calm that allowed the sun to peek through the clouds to reveal a beautiful blue sky. Berkshire Storms aims to emulate these brief tempests with an uneasy calm between each of them. The blue sky opens up at the end, but the storm has the last say. -Douglas GerberDuration: 4:00.

All Kinds of Whether by Joey Brink, for 4 or 4.5-octave carillon.- a suite for carillon by Joey Brink - DELUGEHAILLIGHTNINGRAINDROPSSHOWERSUNBURSTTHUNDERSTORMWINDCreate your own Storm! All Kinds of Whether is a suite of eight movements and fifty-six transitions. Each movement represents a Weather Pattern, and is an ingredient in your storm toolbox.Storms need not incorporate all eight weather patterns (though such a storm would indeed be epic). In fact, some storms may consist of just one movement, or two, or three, or four, or more. Storms may begin with any weather pattern and end with any weather pattern. Weather patterns can be combined in any order by taking the appropriate transition from one to another. No two storms are alike. With eight movements and fifty-six transitions, there are 109,600 possible storms to unleash on your listeners. And even more if you consider recurring weather patterns.ÂÂWhether you create one storm, or another, is entirely up to you. Intermediate to advanced level. Published by Fiona Alice Hickie (A0.737977). This piece is a tribute to the many naval explorers and their crews that sailed in the stormy, 'Storm Bay ' seas.History and Inspiration: Storm Bay Shanty Storm Bay is the opening of the river leading to Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city. It was named by Abel Tasman on the 30th November 1642, when a storm forced his ship out to sea before he could anchor there. He did return there in later days. Throughout its history it has seen indigenous people in their canoes and famous explorers such as Abel Tasman, Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne , Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, William Bligh, Matthew Flinders, James Kelly and James Cook sail its waves. In colonial times whalers could also be seen trying to make their fortune. In more recent times local sailors, including those in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race try and win over one of nature’s more challenging waterways. This piece is a tribute to them, and the songs that would have been sung by sailors in the bygone era.

Duration: 4: 23level: intermediate to advancedConcert festival type of piece!Fog Meets the Storm to program notes: One of my goals was to create a piece that demonstrates many different mood changes and sound effects, that we experience in the climate that we live in. Whether we are journeying to the mountains or driving to work, mother nature is always on display. Therefore, I believe mother nature symbolizes pleasure, pain, and despair. Having the opportunity to grow up in New England and now living in Maine, I have seen a WIDE variety of weather within just a period of 24 hours! While living on the West Coast I will never forget my drive on the 395 going north and seeing the Sierra Nevada mountains (to my left) tall and grand with snow covered mountain tops! To the right, you would see and feel the hot desert! Although the performers do not need to envision mountaintops or deserts you need to respect the different sections and moods of the piece and know that everything is changing around us, all the time. As musical artists, we can convey our life journeys through our individual sound as well as the ensemble; whether it’s through enjoying nature, life’s challenges, and celebrations! Enjoy making traditional sounds and nontraditional sounds with your instrument.

Published by Simeon Goode (A0.917387). This piece for Piano Quintet evokes several feeling before it's ending. It depicts a tumultuous storm with a melody that begins simply minor, and grows into a flurry of confusion by the end of the first section. The middle section is much calmer, with slow and methodical excerpts derived from the first section and some new material, depicting the eye of the storm. Finally, the third section features a return to the beginning, albeit heavily reharmonized. The piece makes use of several keys, as well as some more complex scales. For example, near the end of the first section, the piano part features the octatonic scale, otherwise known as the diminished scale. The piece is tricky at times, and particularly challenges an ensembles ability to stay together in the transition to the third and final section, but is rewarding to the players who weather the storm with a truly evocative and gripping experience.

Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576776). Transcription of Roland Rogers' victorian choral piece The Storm, with words by Adelaide Anne Procter (who also wrote the words for the famous song by Arthur Sullivan The Lost Chord) An arrangement of this music for woodwind quartet is also available on this site. The sound sample is sung by me (transposed down a fourth). The tempest rages wild and high, The waves lift up their voice and cry Fierce answers to the angry sky, - Miserere Domine. Through the black night and driving rain, A ship is struggling, all in vain To live upon the stormy main; - Miserere Domine. The thunders roar, the lightnings glare, Vain is it now to strive or dare; A cry goes up of great despair, - Miserere Domine. The stormy voices of the main, The moaning wind, the pelting rain Beat on the nursery window pane: - Miserere Domine. Warm curtained was the little bed, Soft pillowed was the little head; The storm will wake the child, they said: Miserere Domine. Cowering among his pillows white He prays, his blue eyes dim with fright, Father save those at sea to-night! Miserere Domine. The morning shone all clear and gay, On a ship at anchor in the bay, And on a little child at play, - Gloria tibi Domine!

Hope is such a powerful thing that can push us through the toughest of times. In this poem, Emily Dickinson calls hope a feathered thing. It perches in the soul and sings without stoping. The singing is at the loudest when things are at their worst. Although hope is the central theme to the poem, the harsh conditions that are described in the poem was the driving force while writing the music. Creating a sound for the chillest day and the storm that could not abash the little bird was what really inspired me to write this piece. Something that stood out for me, was the use of dashes that breaks up the poem. I used rests to create these breaks. These rests are very deliberate to show these pauses of contemplation, almost struggling for the right words to describe a complex subject such as hope. At first the rests felt like a hindrance, where it felt natural for the music to flow, but now I cannot imagine the piece without it.

Mendocino Coast Storm (c)2007. Always a sunny glow under a northern CA storm. Many a predicted humdinger of a storm has a spell like the eye of a hurricane when the sun comes out, or tries to, and the rain is a very light mist. Compared with the Seattle area with 3-4 layers of dark clouds, the storms do not seem too threatening with the relative light. However looks are deceiving when one realizes these storms can knock down enough redwood limbs for multi-day power outages in many winters. In the music we can hear the waves and bands of wind-driven rain as well as the sky glow.

Link to complete recording: https://soundcloud.com/geoffrey-peterson/sets/the-edmund-fitzgerald-concerto On November 9th, 1975, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald left port in Superior, Wisconsin. The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. In addition, a chime is rung 29 times during the final bars of the concerto to memorialize the men who lost their lives. The Crew of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald: Michael E. Armagost, Frederick J. Beetcher, Thomas D. Bentsen, Edward F. Bindon, Thomas D. Borgeson, Oliver J. Champeau, Nolan S. Church, Ransom E. Cundy, Thomas E. Edwards, Russell G. Haskell, George J. Holl, Bruce L. Schott Music - Digital #Q48716. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q48716). The Quiet originated from watching a snowstorm from my window at night as the flakes danced in the weak light of the lamp outside. The desire to make the storm audible was the starting point for a journey which morphed into many different other strange, close, and distant storms. These storms constantly evolved from natural occurances into far away atmospheres surrounding human activity, before returning to natural realms. String Orchestra - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1368928 Composed by Martin Lass. Chamber,Children,Classical,Instructional. 28 pages. MA Lass & I Lass #953270. Published by MA Lass & I Lass (A0.1368928). Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music. The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring one solo cello passage, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated. This particular piece, The Outback, is set in the abandoned gold mining town of Goongarrie in the state WA. It depicts sunrise in the outback, the gradual heating up of the day, the scourge of blow flies, the searing and unbearable heat of midday, a sudden flash thunderstorm, and, as the storm clears, sunset over the abandoned town.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - SKU: A0.869207 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. With Summer: Cloudburst! Double rainbow … Trio 3). 48 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #3905. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869207). Program note: As indicated by the title, this is my twelfth string quartet. My very first work, Aperture (1974), was a string quartet. In between I wrote four (nos. 2 – 5) for the Kronos Quartet, one (no. 6) for the Manhattan String Quartet, one (no. 7) for the Lydian String Quartet, one (no. 8) for the Artaria String Quartet, two (nos. 9 - 10) for the Hawthorne String Quartet, and one (no. 11) for the Formosa Quartet. The number twelve immediately brought to mind the months of the year. But I thought a twelve-movement string quartet might be a bit excessive, and difficult to achieve in a coherent narrative arc. Most classical string quartets by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are in four movements. So why not the seasons, a movement for each: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. I am a huge fan of The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn. Confession: I am a huge fan of anything by maestro Haydn. For inspiration and guidance, I went to Haydn’s other oratorio The Seasons. Armed with a Dover publication of the full score and a recording of the complete work by Sir Thomas Beecham on EMI Classics, I got down to work over the summer of 2010. String Quartet No. 12 … The Seasons, after Franz Joseph Haydn is in four movements, played without pause between movements. 1) Intro: Heavy snow … Spring: Crocuses blooming!!! 2) Summer: Cloudburst! Double rainbow … Trio 3) Autumn: La Caccia … Danza Rusticana … Trio 4) Intro: Heavy snow again … Winter: O Magnum Mysterium … Hail storm! The work begins with four descending chords, depicting the falling of snow. But it’s Spring and crocuses are seen peeping through the snow … Summer begins with cloudbursts, thunder, lightning and torrential rain. A double rainbow appears after the storm. The sun emerges from the clouds in the Trio section. It is a lovely day after all; but then the clouds return … La Caccia: men go hunting in the Autumn. Well, the men in Haydn’s days at least. Peasant ladies dance as they harvest in the fields. A hawk appears, soaring overhead in the Trio as the sun sets in an orange-red sky ... In Winter snow falls again; but it’s the season to celebrate the Nativity. Violin and viola chant O magnum mysterium … O Magnum Mysterium O great mystery Et admirabile sacramentum and wonderful sacrament Ut animalia viderent Dominum natum that animals should see the new-born Lord Jacentem in praesepio! lying in a manger! Beata Virgo, cujus viscera Blessed is the Virgin whose womb Meruerunt portare was worthy to bear Dominum Christum. Christ the Lord. Alleluia. Alleluia. A hailstorm wreaks havoc. Fine. Audio link. Published by Overture & Storybook Musical Arrangements (A0.1464125). 'Eric to the Rescue' is the score for the climax scene from The Little Mermaid (1989), in which Eric battles Ursula. This is the first villain battle score from Alan Menken's extensive repertoire of Disney animated film scores. 'Eric to the Rescue' includes musical motifs from Poor Unfortunate Souls, Part of Your World, Flotsam and Jetsam, as well as The Storm, and weaves them all together in Menken's signature thematic style. The Little Mermaid (1989) score garnered Alan Menken his first 2 Academy Awards (best original score and best original song), with many more Oscar winnings to follow. This arrangement for solo piano is a reduction of the full orchestra, and is suited for intermediate pianists. It has some extended versions of certain themes, and fewer time signature changes than the final recording - making it more natural to play as a solo on the piano.

It is from my album 'The Open Road', a collection of 14 of my solo piano compositions. This, like ‘Lullaby’, also originally appeared on Wrestling Angels, and it was inspired by a particularly strong thunderstorm I experienced while visiting friends and family in Kansas when I was a teenager. The original recording was much more robust, and I really enjoyed approaching it anew as a solo piano piece for The Open Road. Other pieces available in this collection are: Bittersweet, Doc Bradley’s Waltz, Edith, Flight of Fancy, Jasper County, Late October, Lullaby, Marble In My Pocket, The Open Road, Prairie Sunset, Skipping Rocks at Shoal Creek, Sunflowers, and Wheat.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1216480 By Amy Louise Lewis. By Amy Louise Lewis. Christian,Classical,Contemporary,Religious,Spiritual. Score. 1 pages. Amy Lewis #813057. Published by Amy Lewis (A0.1216480). This is an enigmatic and rhapsodic piece for solo piano that is composed in Whole Tone C mode and is based on the Book of Revelation Chapter 8 Verses 1-5 in the New Testament Bible. Bar 1-18 is based on verses 1-3 and is sharp, spacey and minimal - the sound of silence and of the angels. The emphasis is the sound between the notes.Verse 4 states: 'And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the Saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.' This section changes tone and phrase. There is a beautiful ascending up the keyboard, which is delecate but with hesitance. It is the light before the darkness; the potential energy before the explosion; the calm before the storm. There must be tension.Verse 5 states: 'And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the Earth, and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.'This section therefore is rather more dramatic, with a contrast of high and low pitched notes and chords. The final bars of the piece are suspension - sharp and repetative chords and ending on one sharp note - what happens next? The pianist should pedal freely throughout the piece and add their own dramatic touch to this very illistrative score.
