Here is the lead sheet version of the new music I wrote for the classic Isaac Watts hymn, The Lord of Glory is My Light, featuring a classic-sounding melody that congregations will be able to pick up very quickly and sing along. It is a perfect hymn to bring God's peace and remind us of His protection in these troubled and fearful times. This version is in F Major, with a vocal range of C4-C5. Also available, by searching Stacey Plays Hymns and the song title on this site, is a version in E Flat major, the original key matching the recording. I have loved this folk song since I sang Benjamin Britten's arrangement of it for solo voice and piano in my teens. This four-part a cappella arrangement has a lilt that those who know Britten's version will find familiar, but ranges more widely harmonically, moving into a variety of different keys as it passes the melody from lead to bass and finally to tenor.It increasingly explores both diatonic dissonance and chromatic harmonies as the emotional narrative becomes more troubled, evoking the poignancy of the lyric in both the shape of the lines and the way they rub up against each other.Vocal ranges:Tenor: E flat 4 - F5Lead: B flat 3 - C5Bari: B flat 3 - B flat 4Bass: E flat 3 - F4It is notated on two staves, treble and bass alta (i.e. bass clef sounding up an octave)

Published by Liz Garnett (A0.1344227). This is a song that, paradoxically, feels both evocative of a particular historical moment and timeless. In it's first guise, as sung by Lesley Gore in 1963, it is a harbinger of both the sexual revolution and Second Wave feminism. Three decades later, as the closing sequence to the movie The First Wives Club, it is full of  confidence and joie de vivre, but by 2016, when released by Grace, it has turned darker, as G-Eazy's rap dramatises the controlling man the song addresses.This arrangement positions the song as a statement of strength and defiance, and re-appropriates material from the rap to craft an original bridge.n.b. Norah Jones won 3 Grammy awards in 2003 for her cover of this gentle yet poignant ballad. The arrangement follows the original very closely in its form and harmonic choices, but builds it into the more intense emotional arc expected by barbershop contest audiences. In this version for mixed voices, the lie of the lines suggests a male lead and female baritone would work best - i.e. STAB rather than SATB (though that is an unfortunate acronym!). This version is notated using bass alta for the lower stave (i.e. sounding an octave higher than written, as traditionally used for female barbershop) as this gives fewer leger lines to read. Vocal ranges: Tenor: D4 - D5 Lead: G3 - A4 Bari: G3 - C5 Bass: B2 - D4 The youtube video is of the contest premiere, performed in the original, higher key (also available to purchase from Sheet Music Direct).
