�tudes for Solo Guitar
The subject of creating an educational aid for guitar students of an intermediate level that will serve also as a similar aid for theory and composition students fascinates me and motivates my compositional thought for quite a while. The objective was to create miniature complete works for the guitar, as J. S. Bach did with his fifteen inventions, in the ?manner? of an �tude that deals with specific aspects of guitar techniques and musicianship in general.


These �tudes are gradually graded based on their difficulty and style. They cover all the positions of the guitar and explore known and some unfamiliar techniques for the contemporary guitarist.
I used a compositional language more familiar for the level of the intermediate guitarist but without sacrificing my original compositional voice so these pieces could be used as concert works by the advanced musicians as well. My intention is to educate students in a multilevel study environment and to be able to promote the music of our time. During my teaching years I found that students become better musicians when they have been taught to adapt certain performance difficulties and compositional techniques at an earlier level of their training.

Composed in October 2019, this book includes 12 ambient piano solos in quiet and reflective styles with each piece being in a different major key. It is so easy to always play in the keys that are easiest while avoiding the harder ones, so this set is somewhat of an set of etudes to encourage the piano student learn and be comfortable with every key. From the composer: "What are Morphs? Morphs are tiny compositions. I wrote them as springboards for improvisation. Most Morphs are under four measures; a few are longer. I wrote these little pieces on piano, but any instrumentalist or vocalist can adapt them. They can also be played in groups. Morphs can be played as written -- with no improvisation -- to practice rhythmic dexterity and keeping a steady pulse. However, you'll have the most fun with these pieces if you have some knowledge of improvisation, scales, modes and chord symbols, or if you have an experienced improviser to work with. As you can see, Morphs are not just in major and minor scales; they are also in some of the various modes and occasionally a pentatonic scale. The time signatures also vary. Try playing the Morphs as written for a few cycles, then branch out and start improvising. There are no rules. In fact, you can change meter or key as desired. All major etude books for violin, including those by Mazas, Kreutzer, Dont and
others, are firmly rooted in romantic harmonic language; minor and major triads,
arpeggios, diminished and augmented chords, dominant 7th etc.

A 21st Century violinist will encounter a much more varied musical language.
Those standard etudes don?t prepare students for octatonic scales, various
modes, whole tone scales, rapid chromatic twists and turns, atonality, extended
jazz harmonies etc. that are a big part of contemporary music.

I created these bite-sized etudes to help students experience different musical
languages and go against the ingrained familiar patterns their fingers are used to.
I hope they will be fun and adventurous challenge for violin students of all ages.

Five simple pieces in DADGAD tuning. Over the years, DADGAD tuning has become an important part of my guitar playing, as well as my arranging and composing. As a teacher, I have also had a number of people contact me about helping them learn to play in this wonderful tuning. These Etudes, or studies, are a response to having music that is easily accessible to beginners to this tuning, without being too difficult. That being said, these Etudes are not for guitar players in the beginning stages of learning. Rather, they are for guitarists wishing to begin exploring DADGAD tuning. Players should have a basic knowledge of fingerpicking and chord playing, as well as knowledge of reading tablature.
