Handel: Largo from Xerxes for Violin & Piano
Violon et Piano
Violin & Piano - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by George Frideric Hand…
(+)
Violin & Piano - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque Period, General Worship, Repertoire, Wedding, Recital. Score, Set of Parts. 9 pages. Published by jmsgu3
Duration: 4:55, Score: 6 pages, Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages. A very famous aria (Ombra mai fu) from "Xerxes"
Suitable for any venue requiring meditative music. Excellent choice for a recital encore.

Xerxes
Xerxes is, in fact, an opera seria in three acts by Handel. Moreover, Handel conducted the premiere performance in London in 1738. Handel casts the opera in Persia in 470 BC. The part of Xerxes was indeed originally sung by a soprano castrato. Nowadays, the part is generally sung by a mezzo-soprano or conversely a counter-tenor. In the first place, Xerxes sings an opening aria, Ombra mai fu to a plane tree. Handel sets this aria to one of his most truly famous melodies. Although many refer to it traditionally as Handel’s “Largo,” Handel has, on the contrary, clearly marked "Larghetto" in the score.

Handel Background
George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in Germany, but eventually became a British citizen. Nonetheless, he was a famous Baroque composer. In fact, he became famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel studied music and, by and large, worked as a composer in Germany and Italy before moving to London. On the whole, Handel was very familiar with the contemporary music of Italy and Germany.

Career in England
It is important to realize that Italian opera was all the rage in England at the time. Moreover, Handel was really good at writing them. Therefore, he started not one but three opera companies in England. Alexander's Feast was a huge success in 1736, but Handel nevertheless began composing English choral works. After success with the Messiah in 1742) he certainly never again wrote an Italian opera. Consequently, he died in 1759, a treasured genius. Accordingly, the English government gave him full state honors at his funeral. Hence, he is buried in Westminster Abbey in London.

Legacy
Music historians agree that Handel was in general one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era. To demonstrate, his works such as the Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remain consistently popular up to the present time. He especially composed the coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest for the coronation of George II. Nevertheless, it has specifically been performed at every succeeding British coronation since. His oratorio Solomon has by all means also continued to be prevalent. As a matter of fact, the Sinfonia from act 3 was featured the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel was particularly prolific. To enumerate, he wrote over forty operas. Since the late 1960s, we have expressly experienced a revival of baroque music. Similarly, we have especially seen a pique of interest in historically informed musical performance. Since his death in 1779, interest in Handel's music has, all in all, expanded.

Register for free lifetime updates and revisions of this product at www.jamesguthrie.com.Duration: 4:55, Score: 6 pages, Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages. Piano Accompaniment, Bass Trombone and Piano - Advanced - Digital Download Composed by Pierce, Alan. 21st Century, Romantic Period, Contemporary Classical, Post-Romantic. Solo Part. 31 pages. Published by Cherry Classics Music
My first season with the Oregon Symphony was 1962-1963. I was so excited when I was told that I was accepted into the Portland Symphony (now Oregon Symphony), I danced and jumped up and down. I can still see myself. Its was like winning the Powerball. I was only 17 years old. What is equally amazing is that 45 years later I retired from a career that very few people can ever experience. I was bass trombonist my first year in the Oregon Symphony and was principal trombonist my third year. I also traveled with the New York Metropolitan Opera National company for 84 weeks as principal trombonist and was bass trombonist of the Portland Opera for 18 years. I played in the Peter Britt Orchestra for two seasons and also in the Anchorage, AK. music festival. I was a scholarship winner to Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass. and the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. I was privileged to perform with Leopold Stowkowski and Erik Leinsdorf. None of this would have been possible without my early training with the Portland, Youth Philharmonic under the leadership of maestro Jacob Avshalomov.

I have met many famous people and have played the world's greatest music. The Oregon Symphony music directors and conductors have been magnificent and have each brought many special talents to the orchestra. I remember special concerts featuring Jack Benny, Danny Kaye, Isaac Stern, Leonard Rose, and many others.

During my time in the Oregon Symphony I developed a hobby of making batons for some of the conductors who visited our orchestra. Most recently, I made batons for Itzhak Perlman, James DePreist, Carlos Kalmar, Riccardo Mutti, Murry Sidlin, Hannu Lintu, Karel Mark Chichon,

Andre Watts, and many others.

Since establishing the Alan Pierce Piano Service in 1976, I have tuned pianos for the Oregon Symphony, Andre Watts, Lawrence Leighton Smith, James DePreist, Murry Sidlin, Norman Leyden as well as for many churches, schools and prominent piano teachers. Most recently I tuned the piano in the home of world famous Janet Guggenheim. One of my most special memories was an all expense paid trip to Scottsdale, Arizona to tune the piano of a prominent surgeon. While in Arizona, I had the chance to spend time with the late James DePreist who had a home in the area. For two summers, I also served as piano technician for the Sunriver Music Festival I am currently the president of the Reno chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild.

Most recently I got to meet Geoge Curran, bass trombonist of the New York Philharmonic. My wife and I traveled two times to hear him perform my Romanza and Scherzo for bass trombone and piano. What a thrill to hear a world famous trombonist perform my music. I am very honored that George Curran recorded my music on his latest CD. (Vital Signs)My first season with the Oregon Symphony was 1962-1963. Tenor Voice,Vocal Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534399 Composed by Gregory Sullivan Isaacs. 20th Century,Opera,Romantic Period,Standards. 126 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3424583. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534399). Described as a « tour de force« during the operaâ??s initial run of performances â??Henry Faustâ? by Gregory Sullivan Isaacs is a three-act, one character opera based on Goëtheâ??s play as translated by Anna Swanwich (1859) with a libretto by the composer. It was premièred at the Circle Theatre in Chicago on April 11, 1993 with the Composer as Faust and Kevin Hinton, pianistâ??Henry Faustâ? started out as a thought about the â??essenceâ? of opera. Isaacs thought that one singer, one piano, and a black box theater were all that was really needed to achieve â??opera-nessâ?. Goetheâ??s play, â??Faust,â? immediately came to mind. The tale of the professor who makes a deal with the devil for infinite knowledge and the restoration of youth, only to betray himself by lust, seemed perfect. The three-act opera is for tenor and piano and in a Goethe-era English translation by Anna Swanwick. She was the leading translator of Goethe of her day and one of the first advocates for womenâ??s rights. Every word Faust sings is a line from the play. The opera is set in a miserable single-occupancy hotel room furnished with an iron cot, a beat-up dresser and a tattered arm chair. Faust, disheveled and in his pajamas, lives out the drama. The ensuing events, the feverish creations of an addled brain, are all real to Faust. He sees and interacts with the other two characters â?? the devil and Gretchen â?? and flies to hell to dance at the Witches Sabbath. Both the tenor and piano parts are equally demanding and require artists of the first order. The tenor part covers a great range â?? both vocally and dramatically. The piano part requires a virtuoso and musically expresses all of the imaginary characters.SOME SELECTED HENRY FAUST REVIEWS â??You can add Henry Faust to that short list of successful single-singer operas (Schoenbergâ??s Ewartung and Poulencâ??s La Voix Humaine) ... it proved to be a moving experience. Isaacsâ?? music, cast in traditional forms, such as fugue, passacaglia, rondo and variation, is always accessible... often strikingly beautiful, as in the Ländler that closes act two.â? THE DETROIT FREE PRESS (John Guinn) - Detroitâ??Written in what Isaacs calls â??refreshed tonality,â?? this lush, supplely intense music serves the drama well ... from the despairing agitato of Faust's opening agonies to the lyrical frenzy of his first glimpse of Gretchen to a hushed declaration of love as tender as we could wish... Isaacs' tour de force certainly has a future.â? THE CHICAGO READER (Larry Bommer) - Chicagoâ??...the first (full evening) operatic monodrama ever promises to give Goethe's thrice-told tale a fresh contemporary slantâ?¦ a theater piece that uses opera as its language... a prototype of a new kind of small theater piece, eminently practical at a time of reduced opera company budgets... (Isaacs) brings solid professional credits ... an experienced conductor as well as composer/performer.â? THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE (John von Rhein) â?? Chicago

Piano Accompaniment, Cello - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Jules Massenet (1842-1912). Arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. Romantic Period, Opera, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Wedding. Individual Part, Score, Solo Part. 12 pages. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha
This arrangement was modified in its edition and violin indications. A very clean piano part was written. Very good edition of the entire score.

The Méditation is an instrumental entr'acte performed between the scenes of Act II in the opera Thaïs. In the first scene of Act II, Athanaël, a Cenobite monk, confronts Thaïs, a beautiful and hedonistic courtesan and devotée of Venus, and attempts to persuade her to leave her life of luxury and pleasure and find salvation through God. It is during a time of reflection following the encounter that the Méditation is played by the orchestra. In the second scene of Act II, following the Méditation, Thaïs tells Athanaël that she will follow him to the desert.

The piece is in D major and is approximately five minutes long (although there are a number of interpretations that stretch the piece to over six minutes). Massenet may also have written the piece with religious intentions; the tempo marking is Andante religioso, signifying his intention that it should be played religiously (which could mean either strictly in the tempo or literally with religiously-founded emotion) and at walking tempo, or around 60 BPM. The piece opens with a short introduction, with the solo violin quickly entering with the motif. After the violin plays the melody twice, the piece goes into a section marked animato, gradually becoming more and more passionate (Massenet wrote poco a poco appassionato). The climax is reached at a place marked poco piu appassionato (a little more passion) and is then followed by a short cadenza-like passage from the soloist and returns to the main theme. After the theme is played twice, the soloist joins the piano while playing harmonics on the upper register as the piano quietly play below the solo line. This arrangement was modified in its edition and violin indications. Piano Solo - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). Arranged by Trancribed by Flavio Regis Cunha. Baroque Period, Early Music, Wedding, Graduation, Recital. Score. 12 pages. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha
Les Boréades is a tragédie lyrique mise en musique, or a lyric tragedy put into music, a type of opera, in five acts by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). It is the last of his five such works. The libretto, attributed to Louis de Cahusac (1706?1759), is loosely based on the Greek legend of Abaris the Hyperborean and includes Masonic elements; the Boréades are the descendants of Boréas. 'The Arts and The Hours' interlude from Rameau?s final opera, ?Les Boréades?, written in 1763 when Rameau was 80. Ólafsson transcribed it for the modern piano because its colourful resonance allows for new and interesting textural possibilities in a piece that seems so ahead of its time: its rich harmonies of suspended 9ths and 11ths one could almost imagine Mahler writing in the late 19th century. In the original opera, based on a Greek legend, the interlude bears a somewhat lengthy title: ?The Arrival of the Muses, Zephyrs, Seasons, Hours and the Arts.? As all these mythical beings summoned to the stage have something to do with the arts and with time?s passing, Ólafsson allowed himself to call my transcription simply ?The Arts and the Hours?, with a nod to the Greek aphorism best known in its Latin version as ?Ars longa, vita brevis?. Almost three centuries after his death, the legacy of his art is still growing, with works still being discovered, premiered and brought back from obscurity.Les Boréades is a tragédie lyrique mise en musique, or a lyric tragedy put into music, a type of opera, in five acts by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). Piano Solo - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). Arranged by Transcribed and arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. Baroque Period, Early Music, Funeral, Graduation, Recital. Score. 9 pages. Published by Flavio Regis Cunha
Les Boréades is a tragédie lyrique mise en musique, or a lyric tragedy put into music, a type of opera, in five acts by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). It is the last of his five such works. The libretto, attributed to Louis de Cahusac (1706–1759), is loosely based on the Greek legend of Abaris the Hyperborean and includes Masonic elements; the Boréades are the descendants of Boréas.

'The Arts and The Hours' interlude from Rameau’s final opera, ‘Les Boréades’, written in 1763 when Rameau was 80. Ólafsson transcribed it for the modern piano because its colourful resonance allows for new and interesting textural possibilities in a piece that seems so ahead of its time: its rich harmonies of suspended 9ths and 11ths one could almost imagine Mahler writing in the late 19th century. In the original opera, based on a Greek legend, the interlude bears a somewhat lengthy title: “The Arrival of the Muses, Zephyrs, Seasons, Hours and the Arts.” As all these mythical beings summoned to the stage have something to do with the arts and with time’s passing, Ólafsson allowed himself to call my transcription simply ‘The Arts and the Hours’, with a nod to the Greek aphorism best known in its Latin version as “Ars longa, vita brevis”. Piano Accompaniment, Trumpet and Trombone Duet - Intermediate - Digital Download Composed by Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901). Arranged by Robert Fisco. Romantic Period, Classical Period, Opera. Score, Set of Parts. 12 pages. Published by Cherry Classics Music
The Brindisi song is a famous duet from Verdi's La Traviata opera. The music is lively and encourages the drinking of wine during a party at Violetta's house by her friend Gastone and herself.

The music is appropriate for intermediate performers for Trumpet in B-flat and Trombone in bass clef. This lovely arrangement by Robert Fisco is good for training young performers how to tune octaves and blend their sounds together in a fun way.The Brindisi song is a famous duet from Verdi's La Traviata opera.
