Concerto for Soprano Saxophone was commissioned and premiered by Swedish saxophonist Anders Paulsson in 1998 with the Northern Arizona University Orchestra, Robert Baldwin conducting. I knew of Paulsson’s expertise and artistry as I had composed my cantata Feet of Jesus with his playing in mind. The first movement contains thematic material that is repeated and developed in the second and third movements. I wanted to take advantage of the melodic potential of the soprano sax, exploring nuances of color throughout the range. There are slight suggestions of jazz elements. This first movement introduces the sound of the soprano saxophone and suggests what is to come later on with more challenging technical passages.

UPC: 038081498232.This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's four-some edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the room music quality of the original shines through in this skillful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen. The first four notes of the primary theme outline a major arpeggio do-so-mi-do. This primary theme is recast through a series of variations, which gives the work its dynamic yet cohesive tone. HIJINX is a rousing piece for soprano saxophone and symphonic band. Aside from the fanfare, HIJINX features a groovy dance, a serenely mysterious cadenza, and closes with a jam session and a thrilling coda. ​.

Huang dedicated the piece to the Canadian Saxophonist Paul Brodie who premiered it in Parry sound of Ontario in the same year. Written in Saibei Folk Style, the music is divided into 5 movements without stop. As usual, Huang didn‘t use any folk song . But the typical taste of Huang’s “Zhang Jia Kou[張家å£] accent†is pretty easy to be identified. With the concert virtuosity, the 1st movement is composed as an emotional Cadenza which expresses the profound affections to the land of Saibei. Using the same Alto Sax., the lyric 2nd movement is followed by a folk dance, the 3rd movement. Chang to a Soprano Saxophone, the 4th movement is sound like a dreamy nocturne which is interrupted by the percussions of the fiery 5th movement. The whole Rhapsody ends on a climax of the Chinese Northern west “wind and percussion “styleâ€. Brodie found more than 300 trills in this piece. Perhaps this is the key to perform the music in real Chinese style. Huang has composed 5 versions of these pieces for different ensembles: saxophone solo with piano, or strings, or winds/brasses, or Chinese traditional orchestra, or symphony orchestra. The attached mp3 was performed by the German saxophonist Jurgen Demmler with pianist Peter Grabinger in 1996. Duration: 20’.

Using the same Alto Sax., the lyric 2nd movement is followed by a folk dance, the 3rd movement. Chang to a Soprano Saxophone, the 4th movement is sound like a dreamy nocturne which is interrupted by the percussions of the fiery 5th movement. The whole Rhapsody ends on a climax of the Chinese Northern west “wind and percussion “styleâ€. Brodie found more than 300 trills in this piece. Perhaps this is the key to perform the music in real Chinese style. Huang has composed 5 versions of these pieces for different ensembles: saxophone solo with piano, or strings, or winds/brasses, or Chinese traditional orchestra, or symphony orchestra. Published by Ted R. Marcus (A0.840485). The tonal palette of the modern concert band brings fresh color and variety to the complete second movement of Haydn's Surprise Symphony. The famous theme and one of the variations explore the subtle contrast between bassoon and English horn. The original repeats are opened up and scored differently, using contrasting colors and combinations of solo clarinet, solo flute, piccolo, and soprano saxophone. A repeated section first has a flute and oboe accompanied with clarinets, then a saxophone quartet on the repeat. One variation features a solo piccolo and bells. And a prominent pair of horns recalls the sound of Haydn's divertimenti for wind ensemble. Duration: approx. 6:00. Written for an adult community band, this challenging arrangement is appropriate for a university, college, or community band, or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. The bassoon, English horn, and soprano saxophone parts are all fully cued to allow rehearsal or performance in the absence of any or all of them. Two strong horn players are essential; but the third and fourth horn parts are easier, and cued in trombones and euphonium. The bassoon parts use the tenor clef and ascend to a high B-flat; the second bassoon has only one 8-measure high passage that doubles the horns and can be omitted if necessary. The alternate versions of both bassoon parts use only bass clef but are otherwise identical.
