Appalachia Waltz by Mark O?Connor is the title track from the album featuring O?Connor, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer. The Sony Classical release debuted and then stayed for several months at the No.1 position on Billboard Magazine?s Classical music chart. O?Connor originally composed the piece as a solo for unaccompanied violin in 1993. For the recording with Ma in 1996, O?Connor and Meyer re-arranged the waltz for violin, cello and doublebass. As it currently appears in this manuscript, O?Connor adapts the instrumentation for two violins. ?Appalachia Waltz? might well be one of Mark O?Connor?s most-loved compositions. It utilizes musical inspiration from Scandinavian and Appalachian folk fiddling, while crafted into a classical music setting. The music is suited for advanced and intermediate levels.

Give It Up is a song by American disco group KC and the Sunshine Band, although it was simply credited as KC in many countries, including the US. Following the backlash against many disco artists on the charts at the beginning of the 1980s, the song was a comeback hit for the act in the US. Epic Records refused to release it; however, the independent Meca Records label showed its support and the song peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1984. The song had been an even bigger hit in the UK several months earlier, where it had hit No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in August 1983. It went on to become the 18th best-selling single of the year in the UK. It was the last of the band's hits in the US and UK, and the most successful of its 10 UK hits. Commissioned by the Fort Smith Symphony - John Jeter, Conductor John Trumbull (June 6, 1756 - November 10, 1843) is perhaps the most overlooked of the Founding Fathers of The United States. Born and raised in Connecticut, John Trumbull was the son of Jonathan Trumbull (October 12, 1710 - August 17, 1785), Governor of Connecticut from 1769 to 1784, the only Royal Governor to side with the Americans during the Revolutionary War. Trumbull fought in the revolution, witnessing Bunker Hill and using his artistic abilities to sketch the British Works at Boston. Later, he was appointed second personal aide to General Washington, and in June 1776 he served as deputy adjutant-general to General Horatio Gates. Trumbull resigned from the army in 1777 over a dispute about the dating of his commission. In 1780 Trumbull traveled to London to study under Benjamin West: It was West who urged Trumbull to paint small pictures of the War of Independence, the works which would make him famous (he painted around 250 during his lifetime). In September of 1780, Continental troops captured British agent Major John Andre, after news of this reached Great Britain, Trumbull was arrested in retaliation. He was imprisoned for seven months. After the War, Trumbull again traveled to London, and then to Paris. It was here that Trumbull began work on two of the works depicted in this piece. He made sketches for the Surrender of Lord Cornwallis and, with the help of Thomas Jefferson, the US minister to France, he began working on The Declaration of Independence. In addition to paintings depicting the revolution, Trumbull painted numerous portraits, including those of George Washington, George Clinton (Governor of New York), Alexander Hamilton (the source of the $10 bill), and John Adams. I was tasked with composing a piece which would be educational for the students in attendance. I ended up writing a piece that would have educational material both in its musical construction and its subject matter. Trumbull's use of color, especially darker hues, and the structure of his paintings informed the construction of the piece. Three specific paintings influenced the work: The Capture of the Hessisans at the Battle of Trenton, The Declaration of Independence, and The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis. A recurring theme in the work of Trumbull is how the central act is always depicted at the center, with opposing groups on either side. The piece derives its form from this trait, casting the two large battle sections on the outsides, with the central act of the Revolutionary War in the center (The Declaration of Independence). The only percussion in the piece are drums, lending a certain militaristic feeling to the work, and evoking images of marching armies. Extended techniques are used repeatedly, casting a shade of uncertainty around the military campaigns (Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware and the seige at Yorktown), while The Declaration of Independence is scored in strict time and with more traditional harmonies, solidifying the event as the central moment of American history.

The first pits the piano with its explosions against the flutes melodic line - the piano's sustaining pedal held down above which the flute meditates and cascades. The second is more gentle.with the flute and piano intertwined. With My HeartInspiration In 2012 my wife suggested we attend a church service at a Catholic church in town called Holy Cross. It was unclear as to where this came from; my wife has never been one to attend church services. I agreed though I was puzzled. On our first attendance what caught my ear was the beautiful sounds coming from the choir. There was a choir director playing the piano and singing soprano, one alto, one tenor and one bass. They sounded quite good especially the director; she had studied at Julliard and there were several other choir members who were trained musicians. It was only a few months later that I found myself singing with the choir during lent. From this experience was born With All My Heart, written for the Holy Cross choir. The Music The music is upbeat, contemporary, with lyrics modified from Psalm 103. Completed in 2013, it was my first church piece in a dozen years. A simple structure of ABABCB with a soloist for the C section. Program Notes I thank God for leading my wife to this church as it lead to my resumption of singing for the Lord and continued composing of church music to this day in 2021.

Beginning in the calm Summer and midnight twilight, Fall approaches. September snow and early November freeze up of lakes and rivers. Winter brings months of minus 30 and days with 16 hours of darkness. Gradually the first signs of Spring occur in April, with breakup of lake and river ice in late May. Finally, a return to the brief, wonderful bug infested Summer with 10:30 P.M. sunsets and nights that never get totally dark, completing the cycle.
