Theme and seven variations for organ, suitable for performance in church or recital hall. Contents/Durations:Theme: 1:15Canon: 2:06Fugue I: 2:29Fantasia: 2:09Trio: 1:55Fugue II:1:43Interlude/Double Fugue 4:51Meditation: 1:47Herzlich tut mich verlangen is a German hymn with lyrics written in 1599 by Christoph Knoll. It contains 11 stanzas and is known for its plaintive character.  The melody was adapted from a secular song by Hans Leo Hassler called Mein G'müt ist mir verwirret. The tune, Befiehl du deine Wege, first appeared in print in the 1601 Lustgarten Neuer Teutscher Gesäng.The melody is associated with the prayer for a blessed death, beginning Herzlich tut mich verlangen nach einem sel'gen End (I do desire dearly a blessed end). The hymn has been referenced in the works of composers such as J.S. Bach and Brahms, and it is also associated with the organ piece BWV 727. The title is sometimes confused with O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden, as the two melodies are occasionally interchangeable in hymnals from the time.

The collection contains 12 easy preludes for organ without a pedal. The preludes lend themselves very well to a church service and are excellent pedagogical material.August Freyer (15 December 1801 – 28 May 1883) was a Polish musician and composer, specializing in both performance and composition on the organ.August was born in Saxony in 1801. He moved to Warsaw and began his musical career there as a double bass player. He became organist at the Warsaw Evangelical Church, had the organ rebuilt, and turned his church into a prominent musical location while becoming the prominent organist and organ teacher in Warsaw. He made a tour of northern Germany as an organist, from which he received wide acclaim.August was a musical pupil of Józef Elsner. He became a close associate of Adolf Friedrich Hesse. He promoted Hesse's music to Mikhail Glinka, successful in his performance to the point of reducing his listener to tears. At an early age Stanisław Moniuszko became his pupil, his parents relocated to Warsaw in order to have Stanisław study with Freyer. He died in 1883.Freyer was largely responsible for the revival of organ music in Poland. He was a master at music balance, both homophonic and polyphonic. His playing was appreciated by Felix Mendelssohn and Louis Spohr. In addition to the aforementioned German concerts, he toured Paris to enthusiastic reception. His most famous composition was a set of Concert Variations of which the final-movement fugue is the most recognized.

La Folia is a ground that’s been used by many composers over the centuries, including Corelli (Violin Sonata Op. 5, no. 12) and Vivaldi (Trio Sonata, Op. 1 no. 12), and more recently, Rachmaninoff (Variations on a Theme of Corelli) and Manuel Ponce (Variations sur Folia de España et fugue), and more recently still, Glen Shannon’s La Follia Variations for recorder ensemble. Many of these pieces are quite long to listen to, but are written for a variety of instruments and a variety of styles. Perhaps it will inspire you to try and write a variation yourself. You can have your teacher play the ground and you play your variation at the same time to see if you like how it sounds together. Warning! DO NOT start this piece too fast! The opening theme is very easy, but after every eight bars, each variation becomes more difficult as you Level Up through the piece. Keep everything under control, and think of ways you can make each variation sound different – experiment with your dynamics and articulations. Time: ca. 2:15Key: D minorRange: E2-Bb3With large leaps and running scalar sixteenth note passages, this piece is appropriate for a second year student.Once the student has purchased this piece, an adjudicator’s copy may be made. It yields exciting moves to tease the audience’s appetite for the real treats of the variations. The key to performing this piece is to feel and emphasize the half-note rhythm and play the phrases against it. Dynamics are up to the performer. Theme & Variations The delight for the performer and listener is to emphasize the unique traits of each variation while celebrating their similarities. A great audience toe-tapper (mostly!). Each variation’s title indicates how to play it; further notes below. 1 PLAYFUL Stretches the theme’s rhythms for a friendly teasing. 2 MAJESTIC This variation indulges in the compound meter exploration of the theme. Emphasize the linear lines and the ornamental notes will shine. 3 BRIGHT Practice the intervallic phrasing until you can hear what note follows which. Then bang it around for a jaunty, vigorous performance. 4 AGILE Practice slow then add speed. The luscious 16th notes energize the phrases and give them wit. 5 TEARFUL Let the notes do the work-don’t try too hard. 6 FESTIVE Must use repeats. A gigue that washes away the previous variation’s mood. Always emphasize the one-two bounce feel throughout. 7 TREMENDOUS Molto expressivo. This A section is anguish; B is reflective, loving, and then tender. 8 CHICKEN Chicken chickens chicken. Chicken! 9 FANTASTICAL No repeats: just a glorious monstrosity of extraordinariness. Get ugly. 10 MARCH Must use repeats. If you clip the dotted notes and focus on the one-two, one-two march rhythm, the melody will soar. 11 BLUES Be sure to swing it and adjust the tempo so the bluesy sound comes through. 12 A CARNIVAL NEAR VENICE Akin to variation 2. Practice it slow and build up speed. Nothing more than the theme with a compound voice in the upper register. 13 FUGUE Distinguish the two lines and it’ll be like playing two tubas simultaneously. Practice slow to learn to differentiate the two voices and it’ll be a dazzler. 14 FAREWELL A bittersweet mixture of bold thankfulness for the joyous discoveries and sadness for having to say goodbye. Be aggressive with the arpeggios for the harmony to resound.
